Honestly, I dont understand where fullon came from. I was reading about the history of Goa and I can understand how it evolved into other types of trance, but how/when did fullon get thrown into the picture? I know it hasnt been too long, but Im still curious.

Full on was one part of goa trance. A small part which should've (imho) remained that size
Instead it grew and killed every other part - plus making a reputation as if 'psytrance = full on' among many youngsters around the world.

Of course today's fullon doesn't sound like from those days, and today it wears many other forms of agressiveness and bassline oriented drill.

With time, aggressive music took over everything - if talking about the scando-sounds and the minimal introduction. It was then when full on of today got its main ideas.

am I missing something?

As I see it, Full-on simply grew that big as a counter-reaction against the Minimal trend of the late 90's.

Somehow, it is the equivalent of early Nitzhonot : straight-in-your-face but not that much psychedelic IMHO. Maybe it became so popular in Israel for the same reasons. Just guessing...

Full-on came from a bunch of new artist(around the year 2000 maybe?) adopting alot of GMS style.

^ agreed.. I'd totally peg the modern full-on sound as a GMS-sound offshoot, reactionary to the minimal wave of 1999 - 2001. Deedrah is another important name to mention, as Reload set the style for those rolling basslines (in fact if you want a grand-daddy track for the full-on wave, the GMS remix of Reload is a good choice). Astrix should also get some credit on the Israeli side of things...

...if you notice, makers of the old full-on sound don't really do anything like that any more. Cosmosis went groovy with Mumbo Jumbo, Pleiadians lost some members and went techno with Chrome and other releases, ex-Green Nuns members now make progressive and ambient, and many others just faded away.

Like most sub-genres of techno.

- The elements of full-on existed in many songs, I've heard similar elements in really really old stuff. However, like in many other sub-genres of techno, the 1 element (ie: the insane basslines), gets popular, then new producers make more and more tracks focused on that one sound, and a new sub-genre pops up with the focus being that element.

You have to distinguish between 2 different styles of full on: The Israeli full on and other Full On.
Israeli full on (which is my favorite genre btw ) is just an evolution of nitzhonot. Contrary to the elitistic view of most people, this music is not based on basslines (of course there is a bassline - it is trance after all), but based on very happy and uplifting melodies. It's nitzhonot - yes, but nothing is wrong with that

I see the full on divided into 2 main group. the Skazi's and the Astrixes. with GMS being the Godfathers of it all.           Kinetic Honda GmbH, Worldwide Supliers of Quality noise.

I dont.
the origins of Full On as we know it go back to 1997. by that time Goa trance have become quite powerfull musicly with ever higher bpms and stronger and stronger bass lines. simultaniously the move towards more rythm inclined music was taking over the scene and the eastern melodies that were so charachteristic of Goa (and Nitzhonot - its small problematic sibling) were getting over exposed and boring. so the trend moved to more bass line, leaner sound, less melody on melody on melody, more scratchy sounds, etc. and Full on was born. It was a worlwide trend lead by the israelis and the french.

leading landmarks:
Full on 1 (Hommega) 1997
GMS - The Growly Family (Tip) 1998
Full On 3 (Hommega) 1999
Infected Mushroom - The Gathering (Bne) 1999
Ultra High Frequencies (3D Vision) early 2000

Interesting point of view GuyShanti, but I have some trouble considering "The Gathering" Full-on. IM has always developed a sound of their own, relatively far from the GMS-like business IMHO.

Pointless sub-genre feud I suppose anyway...

Guy, we should really finish that work we started over at my place.

I agree with you, but then modern full on was perfected by the 2 artists i have mentioned. Skazi who took the french sound and made it into a lean mean Killer machine and Astrix who has merged the GMS formula with the Israeli melodic influences into the clasic full on morning sound. this was made in late 2000 and early 2001.

as to your list above, Psychotropic by 3D vision (1999) was to my consideration more influential then UHF while Full on 2 and Isra/Aliens 1 (both 1999) were more influential then Full on 1 (which was still very Goa) and Full On 3 (Which was mostly Xerox and Freeman stuff). IM shouldn't really be there either, yes they have influenced almost every artist in this scene and their bass+kick work was studied by many producers but their work doesn't really form as full on.
i think we can defenitley point at 2001 as the year when full on exploded in israel as a conter-reaction to the minimal expantion.          Kinetic Honda GmbH, Worldwide Supliers of Quality noise.
