SYMPTOMS OF RELIGIOUS ADDICTION
© Paschal Baute 1993

* Inability to think, doubt, or question religious information and/or authority
* Black-and-white, good/bad, either/or simplistic thinking: one way or the other
* Shame-based belief that you aren't good enough or you aren't doing it right
* Magical thinking that God will fix you/ do it all, without serious work on your part
* Scrupulosity: rigid obsessive adherence to rules, codes of ethics, or guidelines
* Uncompromising judgmental attitudes: readiness to find fault or evil out there
* Compulsive or obsessive praying, going to church or crusades, quoting scripture
* Unrealistic financial contributions
* Believing that sex is dirty; believing our bodies or physical pleasures are evil
* Compulsive overeating and/or excessive fasting
* Conflict and argumentation with science, medicine, and education
* Progressive detachment from the real work, isolation and breakdown of relationships
* Psychosomatic illness: back pains, sleeplessness, headaches, hypertension
* Manipulating scripture or texts, feeling specially chosen, claiming to receive special messages from God
* Maintaining a religious "high", trance-like state, keeping a happy face (or the belief that one should...)
* Attitude of righteousness or superiority: "we versus the world," including the denial of one's human-ness.
* Confusion, great doubts, mental, physical or emotional breakdown, cries for help

Thanks for the list and link.

I have oftentimes encountered people I think are high on themselves claiming it to be religion. But an addiction to religion never occured to me as a concept.

But how many of the list is needed to be "addicted". Like.. I guess just one out of them isnt enough, and hardly anyone fits the list 100%..

Maybe the quote here: "The ultimate temptation of the believer is to assume that his or her way to God is the best or only way for others. The particular Way to God becomes what is adored, not the ineffable and incomprehensible Mystery to which we give the name of God."

Should be taken as a way to adjust and guide the list that mentions symptoms of addiction?

Anyway.. Interesting thought in any case, and quite useful in talking to religious nutcases.           "... the fundamental striving of every man should be to create for himself an inner freedom towards life and to prepare for himself a happy old age." - Gurdjieff

Well, like any addiction I don't think it matters how many points on the list you meet but how and to what degree the activity reduces one's normal functioning in life.

By definition I would consider addiction to include an inability to stop the activity on their own, without help from others, and continue the activity even though the person knows it is ultimately detrimental to their overall well being.

When I finish school(psychology) I want to have my own therapy practice, specializing in religious addiction and religious trauma.

To be honest, I think you should stay at school until you learn to stop projecting your neurosis onto the "world".           www.youtube.com/trancevisuals

To be honest, do you really believe there aren't people who suffer from religious addiction/trauma?

And who's really playing the projector and projectee roles?

Luckily I did not but I did have sex with a boy from my class in the bathroom at the back of the church.

I never said that, you really need to stop projecting stuff onto other people tbh.

ah , so your anger stems from the Church`s views on homosexuality ? Were generally very accepting of you lot in this culture , makes no difference whatsoever , be shanti , find a nice boy and live happy .

peace

Why do y'all think I'm flawed or angry or whatever? I think my logic is sound and my arguments against religion/spirituality are well thought out.

Yes, I have found the psy scene to be one of the most loving, accepting and intelligent communities that I have been a part of. Love and peace is really what binds us, not you weirdo's religious beliefs.

You keep on projecting, and assigning words and ideas to people who never expressed such things.

Yeah right, your logic is sound.

Arguing against views your opponent does not really have is one of the oldest stricks in the book.
It's called "straw man" and it's about as old as the craft of propaganda:
1) Arbitrarily assign an opinion to your opponent;
2) Demonstrate how skillfully you can argue;
3) Defeat your opponent's folly;
4) Claim intellectual and moral superiority over your opponent;
5) Move on to another heroic quest before anybody noticed that you merely defeated a straw man and not your real opponent.

Anyway, in Pauldo's defence I need to note that "religious trauma" is pretty common and that he is not the only "recovering Catholic" I know of.

A side note here is an old quip: "Physician, heal yourself!"
