Has anyone produced anything remotely close to Mandalavandalz - Hong Kong Nightlife? |

Until now I thought "Christmas in July" was just a figure of speech.
Thank you, once again! |

Fantastic...I actually think its a shame this style has evolved to be called something as forgettable as "Suomi"...
To me suomi has basically become what I use to expect from psytrance. A preview starts and I dont have the slightest idea what its going to sound like. On the other hand trolling albums on saiksounds, if the description mentions spiritual stuff and dance floors i expect to hear a full on baseline and cliche, if it mentions anything even remotely dark or intense i expect to hear a deep machine gun bassline..sad thing is this simple heuristic is right 95% of the time.
You should consider pimping this stuff more as just modern psytrance. Suomi to me will always be associated with Texas Faggot/Denmark/and weird 303 disco music...as opposed to what its become which is basically "anything goes"..

Naming a style is a tricky matter... there is a certain amount of historic precedent involved--hence "Suomi" despite the fact that many acts writing music in this style are from Israel and Australia. Same with darkpsy, a lot of which isn't dark. Style naming is often locked in at some point--after some kind of skirmish in the court of public opinion. To cite one example of this process: we don't see the term "neuro-trance" bandied around much more.
So what is it going to be for "Suomi"? I've taken to calling it "Suomi & Freestyle" in my own naming conventions, while sorting tunes for DJing. "Freestyle" is a bit of a lame term to use, however--particularly given that it has already been applied to another kind of music entirely. "Experimental"? There is too much of a cohesive vibe to call it that. Frankly, I'm at a bit of a loss. I also don't know what to call Prometheus or Hux Flux a lot of the time--so I unfairly lump it in with full-on or progressive depending on the BPM when sorting my collection. Really, it's all psytrance but it helps to give people a place to begin understanding where it all fits into the big picture.
That being said, if someone has another inclusive term to describe the music of EvsY, Sattel Battle, Freeform Human, Crazy Ducks, Ex Uus, Texas Faggott, etc... well, I'm all ears

So what is it going to be for "Suomi"?

Its a problem without a solution. I suppose i was being too direct towards you.
You can't just cherry pick a name, its emergent phenomena. I always thought "psycore" should take off like what breakcore is to DNB..but "core" at that point was already long in tooth and lame..
You can only pimp a style from your position, you can't define it..

To me, the term suomi brings to mind things of Finnish nature - wit and intelligence, humor and good nature, sincerity and integrity.
So naming this style of music suomi seems appropriate, even if the artist is from another land.

sorry to continue the off topic, but just want to add:
I prefer not to see it as a subgenre at all, but a genre
THIS is psychedelic trance as I (want to) know it.
