Actually he was allowed to do just that in our scene here in LA for Halloween. Loved it. I think LA loved his sounds too. Thanks for the suggestion though! And please don't bash our scene until you have tried a dose.
I think Ocelots point is a good one, I agree. And I have to be honest. When the label appeared in the scene I was mad. Simply because it was never needed. I.F.O was a heavy album to me and so was UX's Ultimate Experience, Ominus(koyote) but I never felt like it needed to be called something different at the time. Today it seems that people want to separate themselves from the real name of the music "psychedelic trance" because labels like full on and progressive reared their faces. Example the first few releases from Hommega in 98. I think the labels created these titles to compete. My trance is more "___" than yours. The whole naming thing just fucked it all up. People trying to stand out from their crowd. And every sub-genre is responsible for it.
And I for one can admit purposely not listening to something because it was called dark and as of late have been feeling cheated because there may have been some killer stuff in a comp that I would have otherwise never heard had I not put walls up. I too am a victim of the religion of labels. But I don't think it was the music that made the walls come up. I think it was more about wanting to shun those who felt they needed to be standing alone when I thought we were all together on this! I even participated in talking shit myself! Today I take a different approach and that involves just playing what I like. Whatever you want to call it.
If my memory serves me we can blame xenomorph and menis' album designers for even opening the door to the kind of imagery that some labels use today but that's a totally different discussion. anyway.... rant on.

i dont know, but i really dont see anything bad in the word. i think it has to do sth with ethimology or generally with perconditioning by the mother language. generally our mother language plays an important role of how we perceive the world outside. i really dont get it why ppl have sth against it, to call it dark. somehow i feel that we all understand sth else under dark. i have only good feelings about the word.

well just look what this word lead to hehehe , evrywhere it goes...
actualy on point , did u ever imagine that people with diffrent language FEEL diffrent as well?
i know as fact russian language is much more rich from hebrew (israeli) and they can describe many emotions that all categorized under one umbrela ( small example in english: i LOVE spaggetti , i LOVE you)
obviously you cant have the same feeling for your sweetheart and for spaggetti.. but still with the lack of better word we still use it the same.
and i think in some level it EFFECT OUR FEELING , or makes us very confused.. as we feel something we cant describe..
about DARK in hebrew it has several meenings.. (from dictionery not my opinion here)
1.as night - no light (black)
2.ignorance, lack of knowledge
3.blackness ; unenlightenment ; (flowery) torment, suffering
4.evil, wicked, offensive
but hey if mentioned , wasnt the DARK AGE completly negative time in history ??
im sure now you can see the problem this word create as many can understand it....
so in a way you right here , seems for you it does not meen all that, and this create argument.
just talk on individual artists and labels. this is so much clear then such general term as "dark".. what would the goth kids say about so called dark psy anyway.. i bet they would be horrified from use the term dark on anything that is not full with emotions of sadness and protest...
so back to the topic.. stop calling psy - dark!!!

Dark Psy doesn't exist - some good artists manage to produce an atmosphere - others just FAIL miserably at the 'I've been using cubase for 2 years and listen to my shit music full of people screaming' and think bad trips are fun!
To be honest, the same copied basslines are a massive turn off! Let alone the awful samples used. Talk about Psy trance trying to be Blair Witch Project - no - it doesn't work - u all FAIL at it |

So many people are just missing the point here. As was discussed in another thread not too long ago, any genre is just an attempt to describe music, not a substitute for actually listening to the music. All of these arguments about what "dark" means and analogies to the dark ages and hindu symbolism and whatever else all depend on the genre defining the actual music, and it doesn't. "Dark," when used in the context of "dark psy" doesn't necessarily mean anything. It's a word that groups together some similar music, nothing more.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

SO TRUE!!! No musicality, no quality and randomness equals to "darkpsy" for a lot of people... Actually if they'd all stick to the term "darkpsy" I'd be happy with it because then I'd know what (un)music they are talking about. And that is the point in the end, to be able to refer to a certain kind of music, right? Even if it is neither dark nor psy really |

Think how dumb it would be if classical music created a genre name called 'dark classical' and would include the likes of Wagner, maybe even Holst.
They don't do it, so why should we? They just refer to the composer and it's understood what style his music is.

A similar "paradox" to psy-trance and what people call "dark-psy", is the one between Jazz and free Jazz.
For example, John Coltrane has done some of the most soulful, musical pieces, full of beautiful blues, solid progressive structures and emotions.
Then I bought his Ascension CD. I did not like it at all, and I still love the more, conventional in structure stuff he has done on his own, especially with Miles and others... but I guess there is a time and a place where people just wanna jam and record whatever randomness comes out.
I just though it was awful. I still do.

Many people want strong and hard music, for nights and morning... Hell, even for festivals going for days... Only with this "not existing" style.. Darkpsy.. And i have to tell you, it can be an amazing and spiritual experience, shared with like minded...
I can enjoy everything from prog to fullon and then to 160bpm++ darkpsy... And everything in between, for me its fresh when people start experimenting.
So let the people enjoy, the fact is that darkpsy is spreading like a virus. Almost everywhere you can hear darkpsy at psyparties now... This have gone really fast! be happy and let the people enjoy it (smile to the madness)
