I have no clue what all the fuss is about.
I personally dont like "dark"...I find it
quite...undanceable. Also, it tends to fuck with my head too much hahah but I guess thats the point.
However, I never go around bashing it, thats just stupid. Its not *bad* music like reggeaton and boyband pop stuff, its just different. Its funny how most "ravers" say they firmly beleive in all that peace love unity and respect stuff, but thats the last thing you see and hear when some DJ starts playing dark at a party.
I actually like it when dark starts playing. I dont dance it, but its cool because, I go back to the tent with freinds, and just sit down and talk and rest. Aswell as saying "wow, that sound was really cool/ fucked up".
Also, when the "dark" stops playing, it helps to emphasize the return of the "light" music. I go back to the dancefloor full of energy after my rest!

Were have you been partying? Maybe it´s because you´re hiding in the tent when "dark" music starts to play... I only dance to that kinda music (or to some nice trippy soumi tunes) but don´t know what your talking about... do you think all ppl that likes "dark" music are insane or something and does not like peace etc etc because of the music??
Next time you´re at a party there playing "dark" music... go out on the dancefloor and look on ppl´s faces! BIG SMILES EVERYWHERE, cause we LOVE the music, were all in the same "UNITY", we RESPECT eachothers and thats equals PEACE  
...and btw... I hate that PLUR word and never uses it myself, but since you mentioned it I had to say something...

i used to think that proggy things are undanceble but that is not true:)but i get bored very quickly...sounds the same to me.not all =
Dark has more passion!!!for me at least but still i think there should more respect towards the styles it is psytrance!!! one way or another we are very alike SO rave in peace!!!Bring on the heavy bombs and put the floor on fire!!!!No need to take offence just dance and trance!!!Stop those stigmas about dark it is very serious music and the ones who call it childs play are children themselves .You can't stand the rough sound?well i can't stand fluff sound...but in music the bollocks doesnt matter ! it is only that bangs that get you off all the way the chills up youre body the beat that grabs youre mind and the peace and harmony inside and ouside!!!nothing else mathers.not names not definitions not attitude nothing.The feeling inside it what counts the most!The flow with the music and dance of the crowd! |

but i think, even it's how author says forward moving trance it can be also dark because of lack of creativity and fully chemical basis under it.
And if it so, if psytrance won't keep evolve it seems that psymusic will never be with soul again.
last good cd from "fast moving trance" i heared was v/a - freshly squeezed by tantrumm records.

This is the whole essence of the night time experience IMO. It doesn't necessarily target the dance floor but surely gets your brain juices oozing and gets your mind dancing. Not to exactly fuck with your head as you said but to put your mind out of its comfort zone & creating a challenge by pushing it over the brink of the eternal & infinite, finally throwing you into oblivion in a realm you never knew existed  This is the 'real' power of this music IMO. It gives you the ability to experience the story of the track itself. Off course this may have a lot to do with the LSD or whatever but this is psychedelic music after all & its powers are noteworthy.

turned out to be the usual....light vs dark, twisted intense vs full off cheese etc.....
ocelot i think it was still very useful discussion and as you made aware more than one person.....mission accomplished......the rest who think it is all bout perception (and it is...) let them perceive.....
need to add my feelings tho:
psychedelic experiences/rituals for me are never the same, (like us)...and this goes for everyone?...with or without drugs! this is the genuine beauty of it...explore yourself as deep as possible but never from the same point of view!
when listening to a morning track (and i hope we all agree these are more formula based, melodic, and generally sound more similar to each other than "dark" ones do...) and looking at the dancefloor and people dancing what i generally see is happy people,following a melody, dancing very nicely, and a special energy is released as soon as the long awaited drop drops....WHEN EVERYONE EXPECTS IT....so now we have a "more intense (perceived) bassline, the usual melody, happy people dancing more energetically.... etc waiting for the drop that they know it will come....they look each other and when it arrives once more (predictable) they all dance even more energetically with a big smile....
....sorry but this is no psychedelic experience for me.....knowing when the drop will come, being happy because of a melody does not apply to me.....actually i feel stupid doing so!...... where is the instict.....music drops= higher energy...?controlled like machines!!
how deep can this trance state be...???
dont get me wrong....if all the world was dancing away with a big smile it would help all of us in making it a better place.....
but if your ambitions/instinct in life are to grow mentally, in knowledge, spirituality, self realization or whatever other interests you might have you need challenges, experiences that actually move you from inside... and this (in music) is created by improvisation and unexpecteness......change of flows that left twist then turn, accelerate, right, slow down, up..... drops ..thoughts must come from the conscioussness and not from an expected beat....
how do you compare psychedelic substances and their effects with morning music???or how do you reach an intense psychedelic state with full on... (leaving out, the really funky, improvised, ex. suomi sounds, and some serious sa!?...)
does cid mesca etc compare with a formulaic approach??...mmmm...no...
do dancefloor with night music engage in more psycoactive substances??? I think so! and more importantly VICE VERSA.....more morning music oriented parties engage in less psyco active substances....again personal experience!

yes ive used drugs to compare music (wrong, and please dont use it against me but if to support your discussion)...and yes ive made some generalisation but please try to understand my essence...which is think is closely related to the topic....
dont call psy what doesnt involve you in a deep new psy experience/ritual (with or without drugs)and dont call dark everything that does....and more importantly if you dont care how to call it...why answer the topic??

(leave amphetamines that make you look foolish and and dont expand your mind for the clubbers.....try to push yourself to improve always....produce more goa music that in the morning used to actually bring people to look as they were having a ride on a roller coaster to their moon rather than a flat and happy train journey to "i dont know why im exstatic, but i like this" land)

Buahhhhh. A long topic. i only got to page 12 but i will drop a line to tell you something before i get to the end of the discussion later today.
I LOVE TO CALL IT DARK PSY. It is my new psychedelic religion. And even by calling it dark psy i feel incredible pleasure in my brain cells. So i definitely dont stop calling it dark.
I remember those days at the beginning of the dark psy movement, when Penta and Parasense and so on arose and i first heard about the term dark. Wow, it was an anathema you know, what a blasphemy to my sacred psychedelic religion. Didnt like the term at all. For me it was just twisted night full on, just a bit more serious than all other stuff from that time. I was abused, how can they even think of such a horrible term to label psy trance....Hahahahaha. Strange times of shift...
But now....i dont know how many years have gone from then, but i totally support the term, i totally love the perception being reflected in the term. it is a vast variety of philosophical aspects that i see behind the term. If you think about it, the first years of both psy trance and goa, have been dark. Take hallucinogen and mfg and you know what i am talking about. Not all were like them, but not all were even slightly so genious as them somehow.... Then you take the whole philosophy of the goa trance movement as it has been at the beginning : the connection to the Hindu religion and its holy men smoking chillums...It is a philosophy about SHIVA , a God of DESTRUCTION, being symbolized everywhere in the covers and deco as well as track names and albums. It was a God of destruction, it was not a fucking one and only light, and even if not everyone knew what it was all about , it is still a symbol of destruction that ruled over the goa trance movement for years. At least in this aspect it is very questionable what was the psy religion at the beginning and wasnt it exactly dark???????? Aaron?
Then you take another aspect, the entheogene mind altering plants that were already mentioned. What is it about them that scares the mainstream so much???????? YOu see the point, they are indeed scaring, they are the dark side of life. Demented deranged side of life. YOu see the fucking point? Even the shamans took them in a sacred environment and went beyond life , on a journey to the ancestors, on a journey to DEATH. so it IS indeed a dark aspect, and as a matter of fact, you do know that it was always one of the main aspects of psychedelic religion since its beginning.
Then you have the whole society , the matrix and the system, the wars and the ego games. All darkness around. Preaching about light is boring at some point, we had enough of it. It is just not the reality. And talking about it doesnt mean that it is not a music for consciousness uplifting. It is still the fucking same thing , it is just more real.
And even the anti religious movement. I love it. i have studied a lot about religions and i am very interested about them, but i just dont agree with them. you see. they are a fucking lie, especially what christianity is concerned ( actually with hinduism i get along a little bit better). But you see, it so boring, the whole structure of this society and its religious rulers and authorities. They dont have a fucking clue and its nice to get them to FACE THEIR OWN DEMON. we had quite an interesting era with the dark age in europe, with the witches and the religion following them, it is nice to revive it. REALLY! and yes, being dark helps a lot to do that, it is just another aspect of the psychedellic religion.
And not at the end, you have the sexual appeal too. i love dark psy for that. not only the sound but also the philosophy. the goa scene was so fucking boring and antisexual or i dont know, may be i was too small at that time, and now i grew up and really appreaciate this aspect. It is nice. Using sex for transcendental states is something that Mr Tim Leary told us a long time ago and it would be nice if we get to know what he meant.....
