The Spotify mobile app is awesome btw. I just downloaded a massive psytrance playlist I'd made to my Android phone: Astrix, Antix, Ace Ventura, Cosmosis, Duca, Eat Static, Flowjob, Gaudium, Invisible Reality, Koxbox, MiNORU, Liquid Soul, Neelix, OOOD, Perfect Stranger, Prometheus, Skazi, Sun Control Species, Ticon, Tegma, Vibrasphere, Wizzy Noise... albums from all these artists are on Spotify, and I feel all warm and fuzzy knowing that every time I listen, some revenue goes back to the artist.
As for "the money generated," well it's probably not the same as someone buying the album - you can't compare streaming royalties with paid downloads - but it's a lot more compared with a free torrent. If a listener uses Spotify instead of downloading albums from a torrent, then surely that's better for the artist? Unless you think that 1 pirate download = 1 lost album sale which is obviously ridiculous.
From what I've read, typically an artist's label receive a cent or two for every time their artist's song is played/streamed.
