the best and louder sound isn't near the speakers, near the speakers is just disturbing and damaging.
best place (best quality and strongest subwoofer blast) is the third corner of a triangle having it's remaining two corners on the spaekers: imagine a triangle, the left channel group of speakers on a corner the right channel group of speakers on an other corner and you in the remaining third corner.
around the third corner the sound is also evenly distributed in the space, so you won't notice changes in the sound when you move. opposite, if you're near the speakers, the sound will change much more with a much shorter movement

you probably are right! as soon as the sun is about to rise its always better to move away from the sound .. its feels more wholesome after two three hours of pounding .. and when the ego has been broken .. then i usually find myself close to that third corner you are talking about ..

i think that the music is way too loud in clubs like acidhive said. they usually try to compensate a crappy sound system with cranking up the volume with the result that the music sounds even more crappier and distorted. and the closer you get to the speakers the less you actually hear (but for sure you start to feel the music).
i'll never ever forget the soundsystem at solipse, hungary. that was just perfect. you really felt the bass 20-30 metres away from the stage but still could talk more or less normally with friends and the sound was crystal clear *sigh* 
people, remember to use earplugs! (and if you want to enjoy the music and not just protect yourself invest in quality earplugs for the music's sake and you ears's sake)
