In the metal scene the sign is used to show approval, usually of something like a headbangin' riff, or a cat blowing up etc... It's actually a vector of 'good vibes' for metalheads.
Unfortunately clueless people tend to make this gesture in any occasion that their confused minds interprets as "heavy" such as a U2, or Skazi concert.

skazi was in the punk scene before he started ruing the trance. the influance are obvious.
between atheistic or agnostic ppl(metal&punk scene) it can be a positive contact of rebel and anty forcment, but in scene as the trance scene that have allot of spiritual connections it have to be unpropper and necessary wrong.
