Well being a huge full on devotee myself i think there are 2 broad categories: Night full on and Full on morning.
Night full on would include Absolum , Inneraction , Painkiller , Biogenesis , Azax Syndrom , Electric Universe (majority of his tracks except those like Athina) , Delysid , Theoreme , Space Tribe , Technodrome , CPU (Older material) , Bliss , Talamasca , Kali , Killer Buds etc.

basically artists from labels such as 3DVision , Materia , Nutek , Medusa , Procyon and so on.

Full on morning would consist of artists such as Silicon Sound , Bizzare Contact , Electro Sun , Altom , Delirious , Astrix , Ultravoice , System Nipel , Polaris , Fatali , Protoculture , Wrecked Machines , GMS , Space Cat , XSI , Perplex , System Nipel , Pixel etc.

coming from labels such as Utopia , Trancelucent , Compact , Tip World , Vision Quest , Hommega , Spun etc.

Then we also have artists such as Dino Psaras , Xerox & Illumination , Black and White , Audialize etc. who can not be put into definitive categories. Their categorization differs from place to place. Dino Psaras for example is considered as Full on Morning in Japan, where as in Brazil and England he is considered as night full on.

Just my 2 cents.

The trance dance experience is rooted in the Indian spiritual experience. You dont need an spritual approach to it. Ancient sadhus, Sufi fakirs and babas used to do it staying up chanting and moving all night to mantras and Indian instruments. In the morning they would go and perform a Surya namaskar. The format of a trance party is the same; the party begins at night when dark music is played and peaks with the sunrise when morning full on is played. It is all based on the belief that everybody has seven different chakras. The strongest one, the Kundalini, is supposed to be located at the base of the spine. The others are red, blue, green, yellow, pink and white.

The way it works is that during the night, music that is dark, hard, intrusive and twisted is played. The sun's energy is the purest form of energy. With the coming of the sunrise melodious morning music is played. This is the time when the stronger chakra attracts the others to itself.
At this point, known as the Kundalini Shakti or psychedelia, one achieves a sort of elevation of the spirit through this form of active meditation. It is the representation and continuation of the old tribal ritual. The only difference is that the instruments with which the music is made is now electronic....

ok whats the original idea behind the term "full - on"?
i thought thats talking about the full 16th part bass line. not all the genres manchened here use bass line like this.

psychedelikk you kinda right on this... but it's not ONLY the indian experience. every tribal culture of the world has danced the trance at some point of their evolution. to some extent it is what makes us human...

and as for full-ohm... i know what it means. to me it's tracks that have samples in them that really have some deeper meaning than "rave! technology! drugs! ooouuuuhhh!" they're tracks that help guide the crowd on a spiritual journey while they're out there doing the dance.

i think astrix has got some good full-ohm, and it's not been mentionned before. i don't know psytrance enough yet to name artists like that, but full-ohm is always what i'm looking for, it's my favorite psytrance. full-ohm and prog-ohm too...

i think full-ohm is like... neo-goa? the closest to the "real" experience...

you can say i'm a maniac for classifying it that much, but thats how i feel about full-on.

there are various styles inside full-on, ill try to classify most of them:

* full-on groove: thats plain full-on, with flat basslines and stuff. Headroom, Tristan and stuff. always groovy but always with a plain and flat bassline all over the track - no changes on it.

* full-on morning: full-on morning is just full-on morning. full-on to be played in the morning, like Protoculture and Pop Stream. really melodic and dancefloor oriented.

* full-on night: full-on night is veeeery sofisticated in someways, so its very changeable. although, i classify it as full-on to be played at night (period). mostly its not so melodic, but very dancefloor oriented and has a really groovy and id say free basslines. it changes it all over the track sometimes. call it Killer Budds, Polaris..

* full-on weird: its a very strange variation of full-on, that can be played @ night and day. heavier than full-on morning, lighter than full-on night (but sometimes a little bit obscure too). call it Rinkadink!

* full-on hi-tech: hi-tech is a variation of full-on night. the name says it all. its faster and very very groovy, always! call it CPU, Tickets, Mekkanikka, Mechanix and even Shift is making hi-tech IMO.

* full-on dark: its a variation of dark, that goes full-on because it can change its bassline on the song. Darkpsy (1st cd), Hyperfrequencies, Neuromotor. its kinda more groovy than dark psytrance because of that change in the bassline, but its not really dark just because of that. i call it dark fullon because it just cant fit on the regular full-on night form either.

AND there are also classifications inside of these styles sometimes, some variations. Yage for example, i dont know how to classificate it. Its fullon night, but its different. Same for Triky, its fullon weird for me, but its also different. but i think classifying is a way to know and understand better the sound youre listening to.           Lsdance Crew @ Belem do Pará, Brazil.

let me put it this way...

it's very simple.

full on - everything from astrix, electric universe, hommega artist, psysex, bizzare contact, talamasca (nowdays), visual contact, bliss, mekanikka and so on...

now, of course there are many styles inside full on, but basicly they all surround that bassline we all know, in some cases cheesy melodis, samples about aliens etc..

tech trance - i'm less familiar about this genre, but i think it gatheres spirilianz, midimilz, x-dream (nowdays)

dark trance - very simple imo.. i think the rulers of this genre are russian, because their music fit so well to the night hours... imagine hearing kindzadza in 10 am.. sucks.
more in the genre are the nommos, doof familia (zirkin, double rel, bonky, terranoise etc)
naked tourist...

South africa - it's some kind of combination between dark and the more agressive full on, like phyx, frozen ghost, broken toy, shift and more.

i don't have to write about proggy, do i?
