Shulman - Random Thoughts ( Aleph Zero, Feb. 2006 )

The Shulman project, comprised of Yaniv Shulman and later joined by Omri Harpaz, is considered of the leading groups of the psychedelic chill out and ambient scene, and is my favorite chill act. His second album “In search of a meaningful moment” is the best chill album in my opinion. He is also one of the owners of Aleph Zero Records, the label that released his last album and this album that contains different compositions in different tones that accumulated in Shulman's studio independently of any specific album project. Shulman Live is now consisted of a full acoustic band and all the material has been rearranged to make the best out of the two worlds. The mastering of the album was made by Shulman himself, he is very experienced in mastering, being the main responsible for the Aleph Zero’s Mastering Studio, so the mastering sounds just perfect.

The cover is one of most original covers in a long time. Excellent idea and perfect execution.

Also it can be very interesting to check the Virtual Flyer, it is very well done:

Track List:

01. Shulman - OMG - 11:11
02. Bluetech & Shulman - Midnight Bloom - 06:36
03. Shulman - Zero Degrees - 07:36
04. Sub6 feat. Michele Adamson - Ra He.ya (Shulman Remix) - 09:33
05. Entheogenic - Spaced (Shulman Remix) - 07:59
06. Omar Faruk Tekbilek & Steve Shehan - Ya Bouy (Shulman Remix) - 07:06
07. Shulman - Look Honey it's the Vitties! - 07:40
08. Shulman feat Lee Triffon - I Dive - 08:43
09. Shulman - Staring at the Abyss - 06:22

Chill time:

01. Shulman - OMG --> The album begins in a smooth way, we have enough time to reflect, since it takes almost 5 minutes before the first beat arrives. Yes, God, life, delight and pain are the subject here. I found this first track very introspective and difficult to describe, the sound textures come and go, but always leave behind some melancholy.

02. Bluetech & Shulman - Midnight Bloom --> This is one of my favorite tracks on his album, I knew it on the first time I listened to it. Many well chosen melodies, monstrous synths and unforgettable timbers, it reminds me a lot of the classic Shulman’s second album. This is deep, changeable music. In one word: memorable. The track name brings me to my mind a beautiful image; it is a pleasure to hear this music!

03. Shulman - Zero Degrees --> Somehow the beginning of this third track brought back the introspective character of the first track. It brings me some reflections, old (even sad) feelings, around 3:30 there is hope, and it is just what the doctor ordered to see this hope become something new and full of promises. This track is a perfect example of how music can concern feelings. Meaningful and positive track! If you’ re going to play this at a party, be careful with the weird way the track ends.

04. Sub6 feat. Michele Adamson - Ra He’ya (Shulman rmx) --> This already is a big hit on the chill floors all around the world. The original track was remixed by some of the most skillful artists in the psychedelic sphere, and released as a teaser for the debut album of Sub6, but it is clear that the Ra He’ya Remixes single could not be released without a downtempo remix by Shulman. It develops slowly and it takes more than 7 psychedelic minutes to hear Michele’s sexy voice singing of the most well-known chorus. It is another high light of this compilation.

"How do you like it? Yeah... Take all the clothes off..."
"Bad, bad, bad, bad boy
Go to my room
And twiddle your thumbs 'til I come
Don't have to think
Ohh, let's make some noise
I'll let you bring all your toys"

05. Entheogenic - Spaced (Shulman rmx) --> Beginning with a distorted sample about a prophecy and "The imagination inside the particle really is the most vast frontier...", this is a classic chill tune, a deep bass and implausible sounds are the recipe to the success here. Why do I move my body while listening to this faster track? Maybe because all those irresistible psychedelic elements… Really mind blowing… The solo at the end reminds me of The Doors, it’s good-looking and simple to mix with other tunes.

06. Omar Faruk Tekbilek & Steve Shehan - Ya Bouy (Shulman rmx) --> This very beginning of this music really touch me, it has an beat less emotional atmosphere. The beat arrives bringing movement and taking the track in another direction. Soon we got a flute with an organic timber, and some psychedelic elements creating an incredibly rich diversity. Another change in direction, now a tribal mood is achieved. The stereo work is excellent. I would call this track "The Shapeshifter", since it is a very diverse track mixing different influences; surely it took many hours to produce.

07. Shulman - Look Honey it's the Vitties! --> Wow, I love this track! Right at the beginning there are carefully chosen noises and effects, Soon enough a melody with a pinch of psychedelic in it and some sort of crazy break beat… The whole stuff develops into some sort of jazz influenced music, with a tinny touch of drum and bass. The Jazz-like build ups are incredible! No words can describe it. Brilliant track.

08. Shulman feat Lee Triffon - I Dive --> This fantastic track begins like a classic chill tune, and when we least expect there is a wonderful voice singing:

"I dive in the ocean...
What an emotion...
I dive in the ocean...
I see the man wanders all alone
You..."

We're deep on the chill realms again, astonished by the diving emotions... Again the gentle voice:

"You are inspiration...
You are everything I need...
You are the creation...
You are everything I need..."

After this brief diving we're back on the surface for a mind blowing solo. It’s in fact an exploration of the deeper realms of the inner ocean. This is the best track for me on this release, but this position is always changing...

09. Shulman - Staring at the Abyss --> After all these well crafted gems, what Shulman got left in his sleeve? I think this abyss is deep under the sea, in fact this whole track sounds as if it is happening underwater. Deep diving sounds… What we got here is an inconceivable beat less chill tune. Many sound layers going onward and backward, orchestrated in a remarkable way. Good choice to end the album!

Shulman did it one more time, this is another instant masterpiece, a diverse and eclectic chill album, with a pinch of everything inside it.

Verdict: 9.0/10. One whole point for each track, this album scores high among my favorites. This piece of plastic contains 73 deep minutes of diverse music.

Recommendation: This is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys psychedelic music, and if you like chill out and ambient music this release was made for you. An instant classic, another perfect work from the master Shulman. No words can describe it.

Favorites: 1, 2(!!!), 3(!), 4(!), 5(!!), 6(!), 7(!!), 8(!!!), 9.

How's the fake Ott baseline in "Ra He’ya"? Still bad, or has it been fixed. Can't see any "judging" in your review Full-On, so I guess it sounds better this time? .. I bougth the album from psyshop.com last night. Can't wait

Shulman .. All my respect your way.

I think (not claiming, just speculating) that this is a 0,5 album from Shulman. He will properly release a "full" album soon(?) Just look at the title and tracks. Seems very much like 0,5 album to raise the hype and make some money. PS. It does not automatically make it a bad album IF it is a 0,5 album.

Maybe I'm right?

*hope I'll get the album in my mailbox tomorrow*

I think people wouldn't be disappointed if it was called what it is - a collection of singles and remixes, not really a proper album. It's good as a collection, doesn't really hold up as an 'album', though - the flow isn't quite there, that aspect was always perfect in other Shulman albums.
          ..it's just another party..

Ergo a 0,5 album. Guess my speculations where correct after all

It is a...random story..Not a full story.. But it has some good moments some excellent tunes like ''Staring at the abyss'' !!! Though, it is good to exist some new, fresh ideas in this kind of music( psydub, psychill etc...)

First impression: As many of you, I was waiting for this release since "In search of a meaningful moment" anxiously. When finally I put this cd on, there where some "standing out songs" which caught my attention suddenly, and others which simply deserved to be changed to the next track. I was not dissapointed though, it just didnt feel me up in the first moment as his 2nd cd did.

2nd Impression: Recommendation to all listeners; use good headphones. So I did, on a day there was nothing to do but to relax. When one has the ears adjusted to the moment, one can achieve a better perception. This cd suddenly changed, heard it from start to end several times. Its just great. Songs like Zero deegres managed another level of emotions.

Final Commentary: Well, I would like to think of this cd as shulmans third part of a story. It is not about judging which of his three works were his major standouts, or about feeling dissapointed or dilusioned. Each cd is a complement of each other. "Soundscapes and modern tales" was tribal, ethnic based, the initiations of humans to music. "In search of a meaningful moment" was like the blooming of emotions through the use of music. "Random Thoughts" is a collection of ideas, I guess he tried to fussion the music foundations we have established this days, and he added his part. A hybrid of "our" music and the "music". For example jazz blended with shulmans touch. I guess its the next step he had to take, and it fits perfectly. Get it, hear it, love it.

OK- new Shulman- I waited much for it- and waited now more than a week and about 30 times listening before I am writing. With shulman it is good to wait because you keep getting new suprises all the time.
The verdict so far is that it is true this is not a proper album like they said in aleph zero, but it is full of great music and most important of all it is maybe the only release I heard from the psychill ppl that really shows signs of creating a new style of music. This is the new Shpongle- not because it sounds like shpongle, but because it doesn't!!! New, fresh, different than anything else- a fucking brain shaker!

OMG bangs your head right from the start with Omar Faruk singing out of his last album alif. what a trip, man! Brrrrrrrr........ Then it's Bluetech together with Shulman- it took a while for this to sink in- just beautiful piece with idm touch to it. Then it's one of the highlights of this album- Zero Degrees- this is something never heard before- really- close the lights, close your eyes, pump up the volume in a good system or headphones and you will understand what I'm talking about- these guys are fucking geniuses!!! Then Shulman manage to save this annoying Sub6 song and turn it into something nice, which deserves a prize! The remix to Enteogenic is worth it just for that Hamond solo in the end- I felt like I listen to the Doors again- I swear. Ya Bouy remix I have on Natural born chillers, but it's good to hear it again here. This was the first sign of the new Shulman style for me and it belongs here musically. Look Honey it's the Vitties!!! Fucking hell- what did these guys do here- where did they get this one from? Insane and genius is all I can say- listen well- it will make knots in your brain and it's also funny as hell- especialy with the title... hehe... Then I Dive- tons of emotions- and that funky sound slap in the middle- who says tracks with singing have to be kitch or obvious??? last track is an amazing ambient piece with oriental flavour- just beautiful- and then start again...

This is a lesson in originality- a lesson in sound- a lesson in good music- a lesson in psychedelia- Thanks god for Shulman and what I really want to hear now is the next shulman proper album- if it follows what we have starting here- then... well... drool..drool...
Only bad thing I can say about this album is that it doesn't always flow- I would change the order of tracks a little maybe.

To all who wrote that this is not that special- stop being trance listeners and listen deep- shut your other senses, dark room, no talking, good splif, whatever it take you- then you'll understand...
