Should this be a Religion?

(I know topics like this have appeared in the past, but I'm curious what people are thinking now...)

I've always liked the conscious, spiritual overtones inherent in goa/psytrance music and events, but recently I feel like I've encountered more and more people who seem to be turning it into a religion.

In my mind, the transition from a loosely organized spiritual culture to a religion is pretty much always a bad thing.

when I say religion, i'm referring to something that has strict rules, dogma, no sense of humor or ability to laugh at itself, something which gives people an excuse to be offended by things which don't follow the rules, something that demands respect based on abstractions and symbols - rather than actual accomplishments or merits... something which at first utilizes symbols as helpful tools for conveying an idea, but eventually forgets the essence of the idea, and instead simply demands worship of the symbol.

I'm all for parties that allow for, and even encourage spiritual growth and exploration, but I don't like the idea of forcing it down peoples' throats. And I don't think someone should be considered "less valid" a member of the community if they just go to parties to have fun (of course, assuming that they are respectful and responsible).

im guessing you are from the states... ive seen the san francisco scene and americans in festivals and i can definately say that (atleast from what ive seen) - you guys take it way too seriously (as a religion) like you are mentioning here... i dont think its evident in most of the places... and its definately not like that here in israel altho it used to be more of a spiritual experience than a religion and nowdays here its just one of many different types of parties most of the times (yes the spritiual part in 90% of the parties here has completely vanished)

good guess I'm currently living in Colorado, not San Fran, but you hit the nail on the head - many folks around here just take it waaay to seriously (at least IMO). Good to hear that this is not the case elsewhere around the world - but it's sad to hear that the spiritual part is no longer around.

I feel like something can be deeply spiritual and profound, without getting excessively serious and turning into a religion...

religion?? why do u want to restrict the free flow by institutionalizing something thats free? why do u want make a tradition out of things that keep changing...why do u want to impose views of some on others? let people be and enjoy it ...why do u want followers
i think its a stupid idea...spirituality has nothing to do with religion...religion has everything to do with spirituality...spirits dont have religion...they just flow like the water...everyone drinks water lets make Water a religion or everyone breathes lets make Breathing a religion...ridiculous           When death comes to your doorstep, make sure you are alive

@ Xolvexs - I couldn't agree more, but I feel like that sort of thing has been happening a lot, at least in my area, and it sucks... that's why i made this post

agree... the spiritual aspect in the psy scene is vanishing very fast... and its not good at all... its becoming like one of the many other kinda stupid parties...
we all need to work towards preserving that aspect of the psy scene... But making this a religion sounds like not so good idea...           ?

yeah, got me curious too man.

i can't imagine how this would look? i mean for me the concept of the psychedelic community is freedom, a melting pot of different people, personalities, thoughts, expressions. trying to make it into a religion, constricted by rules would be contradictory to the very essence.

on a individual basis you can of course view it like your personal religion, but as you say, not forcing it down other peoples' throats.

One thing that's common in many US psytrance parties that I don't see in European parties is the presence of an altar in front of or near the DJ booth (usually) and/or some form of opening closing ritual before and after the main body of music. Oftentimes these rituals/ceremonies tend to be very solemn and introspective in the opening, with the closing being some form of group activity by the remaining people on the dancefloor such as a holding-hands circle, a giving of thanks, etc. I think this reflects highly on the cultural background of psy-trance-listening groups on either continent. What do you guys think?

It can for sure be spiritual, if you allow and want to go there... And sometimes you cant choose, you have to go there

I am all for something like this, but it must be something based on free spirit for me to get into something like this...

I think we allready have the religion and the rituals, but we just dont have names for it..

One important part of this "religion" is maybe to "preserve" the psy spirit to the younger generation (or newcomers) so they can take part in this ritual, if they want and feel this is for them.

Its a though task though, and will probably take years untill finalized... Much research ahead guys

I dont think we are close to being a religion at all... we dont believe in any common factor (except more bass).

We dont seem to like the same music, nor search for the same feeling, so in some way we are as much a religion as pop music.

In Denmark we use none or very little altar... it seems to be working fine.

So?! Goa Gill or Skazi as God's chosen ?

i think to find yourself or find truth inbetween of countless expanding minds in a way of trance or let's say a higher state is a spiritual ritual.
It can change all what was before. It can open your heart and your senses wide. And the third bright.
No idol title needed. Each life around inclusively yourself includes the divine.Appriciate the mirror.
