I used to use Maxivista a lot, in exactly the way you describe: Main PC with single large monitor doing the DAW duties, with a laptop's screen as second monitor for other stuff. It worked really well, although there was of course a tradeoff between update rate and quality, and my old PC at the time wasn't really fast enough to give a smooth update rate when the CPU was being hammered by Cubase on full-tilt. One great thing about it is that it will sync the clipboards on both computers, so you can copy text on the main PC and paste it into a document on the laptop. Recommended.

I think it was on maxforlive.com, or some such site, there was a specific plug designed to be able to see what your partner is doing to make it easier to keep together live.....
perhaps this http://copperlan.org/index.php/download/category/copperlan-package
could do it, its got a lot of hairy places I havent yet delved, so its um...
Probable that it theoretically might.
