Bio-Blurb:
Tim Larner has been featured during the years in Tatsu Records, Zillion Mental Anarchie, Groove Zone, Flow records, the list goes on. Not too long ago, the Larner brothers started Zenon Records in Australia , to promote the wealth of promising acts coming out of the island. Showcasing an interesting side of ‘gutsy' progressive without loosing an inch of the musical aspects of the production. The output is radically different from anything in the shelves these days under the label ‘psychedelic' or ‘progressive', nevertheless staying true to the grassroots of the Sensient vibe.
Why we like it:
Because the sound has evolved to the point where it could be considered a Swiss army knife for the dance floor, there are some many features to the songs, you just don't know when you might need it. The general flow is masterfully sequenced and you can tell time has gone to the production. Who else do you turn to when the sound needs to remain somewhat aggressive, but musical without even thinking about drifting to the 140 BPM's?
Why you might like it:
The album is a complex collection of different rhythms and sounds intertwined in between every song breathing new life to the dance floors. Most of the beat work stays within the same boundaries Tim has displayed in the past, but some others are just straight out of an 80's techno-beat box. It would be kind of silly to even try, pointing out every influence this album has crafted, but let's give it a try: There is some progressive, there is a clear techno phase, we have jazzy moment's a-la Thelonious Monk, oh yeah… it is still really groovy, edgy psy trance somehow. Sensient has mastered the ‘rhythmic transposition' effortlessly leap-froging beats in perfect harmony with a winning formula.
My Highlights:
* Rhythmic Transposition
How does a side-chain sounding kick mix on top jazzy samples for a break? 'you can't know the reality of what happened', but you can hear it yourself. The track like most of his work starts cold and hard and it slowly evolves to a complex rythmic formula with myriad sub-levels of sonic detail like only a good craftmanstman would muster.
* Lather
There is 40 second tease at the beginning with some corny samples and quasi-scary sounds, we can only presume are a joke. Well the laugh ends as soon as heavy kick gets things rolling a la-Magnetrixx, but slightly edgier. Somewhere in the middle, there is enough skill to implant soothing, jazzy piano bits reminding me of the cocktail-hour at the bar. Don't read this the wrong way, it works beautifully and Larner knows exactly how long to make it last before it turns jaded.
* Immersion
Full immersion to the Sensient sound with great drum thumping on lower frequencies as the song maintains a progressive feel. Intertwined sampling between a lion growling, a “know what I mean” female voice, and what seems like a baby burping/growling, keeps the listeners occupied with an ear-full of candy.

Yep, psyshop ships it too. I need some more listens to this however. I liked most of Tim's singles so far, but I'm not really convinced whether to buy this album or not. It needs to grow on me I guess... so, I'm off to listen to some more samples

I can't follow musical development in there, downbeat one is nice though.

musical development occurs over 6-8 minutes not over 30-40 seconds or even 2 minutes you might be hearing in a sample. Bottom line if you know the Zenon sound and it's your thing you are not going to be dissapointed with this.

Nice review Rah...
or in the Sensient vein musical development occurs over 6-12 minutes without getting boring or sounding formulated . Yet this album will no doubt convert more trance lovers from pop formula trance to deep hypnotic layered sonic soundscapism that only a true psygressive master like Sensient could do ( meaning you do not have to be on something to go somewhere with this music ) .
Musical masterpiece to say the least... |

if find it development to nowhere, but you right it is not my cup of tea. I just really want to understand ppl who listen to stuff like that. Can someone review one track and it's emotions ? I'm sure Rah as Zenon member should know better material they release.

Zenon Memember? nobody has given me a 'membership' so far, but thanks for asking. If you read my reviews, they are from varied sub-genre's and have no association whatsoever with any label. So stop being paranoid about it.
I would hardly call my reviews 'subjective' and based on emotions, but you have a right to disagree with everyting you read here. After all I review music i like to hear, like everyone selse here.... otherwise why bother? Just be sure you get your facts straight before you start typing stuff you don't really know anything about. I am not a "Zenon member", but yes i like the zenon sound, and i think this release is a good example of it. If you read the rest of the comments you'll see im not only one who thinks that way.

Amazing... hmmm that's not a word I'd use to describe this. Still, tastes differ. But I've given the samples on psyshop and saikosounds some more listens and this is just not for me. Liked some of his previous singles, but to me this just plods along going nowhere. It just doesn't manage to get me in motion. And believe me, I've tried to get into it. Must be those shitty jazz influences he's got going on, which is a bad thing. Jazz sucks when mixed with psytrance (to me Jazz sucks in general), when will people learn?
