Scozbor- Mountain Lord

1. Psygh
2. Levelheaded
3. Normal Drug Taking
4. Hard Pooning
5. Auto-Bogan
6. Vanilla Hymn
7. Positronic
8. Avanc
9. Rainbow Daze

1. slow melodic deep pads. pretty mellow BPM, but groovy. nice morning sound. gets chuggy about 5 minutes in. weird R2D2 bleeps, then breaks up the beat hella funky like.

2. love the syncopated beats. this whole CD has got some mad rhythm BTW. sonic soaring, a bit faster than first track. starts to get goa-delic. love the fat bass funk sound, and with the organ sound. *very* compelling. starts to get shnarsty with all the octaves and ominous melody. nice

3. ok, fast and bouncy now. very clean, tinkly sounds. somewhat suomi style ie creatively strange. got that wonky feeling that makes me head wobble. fattest lead pad of sound i've heard in awhile. and with some more discombobulating melody on top, it starts to really crank. BPM feels like it goes up then back down. excellent sample work too.
trippy =)

4.doppler effect pads and a big big bass sound- got the tone and bump combo on the bottom end really tight. like it. this one is a slow builder type. big old classic flangy synth lead on top, more goa-delia but with a bit of crunch thrown in too. super soaring lead in the last and the bass gets broken into 16ths. very nice ending. up up up

5. bumpy chuggy bass from the get go. building straight up from the last track. big sonic spirals of sploogy sound that just keep driving. furry mental but with very refined xylophonesque melodies on top that keep it fresh. big shift bout halfway and it gets *wiggy* and *wonky*. me likey

6. off beat bumpy rhythm. my head is wobbling again. now driving and tempo seems to be going up up. deep Eraser vs Yojalka-ish bass and haunting melody madness. this one really cranks! end is pure madness. this one's my fave

7. very creative track this. kind of a cross of glitch breaks and trance. pretty melody on top and very moving melody on bottom, with the 4/4 not coming til almost 4 min, then it totally cuts loose. some great morning-feeling energy to close things out, with the breaks back too . dope/fresh/new/cutting edge/outthere

8. mellow but moving. melodic and punchy but not over the top. funky bass will totally get you there. manages to be twinkly and tweaky and twisted.
really cool electro thing at the end too. mad creative

9. dubby breaksish morning melodic creative goodness with some real squelchy stuff coming down at the end. keeps on building, oh yes

all in all very nice work from Scozbor. he's got a great blend of bumpy beats and fat synthy melodies and quirky interplay between it all. creative stuff that's far from typical yet eminently likable, and that's a balance many strive for but few achieve. btw, packaging of the cd is pretty sweet too, not your regular jewelcase or paperpack, but a plastic sleeve with a soft cloth for the bottom. looks like only 150 are officially released (mine's#137).

Thanks Dada Stream

Well, just got it today. After a long delay, days of waiting and hoping to get it, I am digging now under influence of smashing Vanilla Hymn's tunes.
Great release from deepest basements of Australia

Kevin Babbage (half of Odd Harmonic) returns with his third release Mountain Lord. A little more accessible than his earlier work Devic Craft, this time around Kevin has managed to imprint a little more musicality in his work while retaining the fractured and demented aspects to his production. By exploring the quasi-Goa melodic fusions, the final product is positively refreshing. Admittedly the pads and synth work might sound slightly retro-Kraftwerk and primary, the man expresses his ideas with such clouded, psychedelic clarity it is disturbing.

In the simplest terms I can think off, it is a one-hour trip pressed on a CD-R labeled LSD-26. The progression and the sense of a journey have never been more apparent. First, second, maybe third song come around, you know there is a neo-Goa melodic intent... after that it is strange place to be it at. This is just a relentless rollercoaster ride, with ups and downs expertly located throughout the journey as to never really tire the ear. At its best, is music I don't really want to be listening to while sitting in front of a small screen, but rather dancing lost in what Gil calls the trance-dance experience. At its worse, is loony-house music in all its glory. Unexpectedly though, in some cacophonic way it it's always mutating from chaotic effects to original tunes, without really loosing the musical cohesion and purpose. On the ground work, we find one artist who is not playing the ‘I got deepest kick' game. His flare consists of exploring a diverse interaction of break-beats and syncopated pulses with varying degrees of success, without being droning or uninventive. I can almost picture him sitting in the small studio laughing “Ha-ha try beat match that!” and unless you are planning on spinning Procs next, you might want place both earphones on, cause it's going to get wild. As a matter of fact it is hard to believe certain songs can stray so much from its original movements, as to have me wondering if we are still on the same track.

All and all

I have not heard Odd Harmonic as of yet, but if the other guy is half as a talented as Babbage, the upcoming album might be something to keep in the backburner. Top marks for this one, If you are looking for something radically different, creative drum work, retro-melodies and unheard-off effects drift in this direction. I got number 52 out of 150. Get your number before it's too late.
