SHPONGLE
With over 80 years experience collectively Simon Posford and Raja Ram are more than qualified for the exploration into the unclassifiable music frontiers they have ventured into; ‘SHPONGLE’ is a new world of traditional sounds, acoustic guitars, Moroccan drums, Turkish operatic singing, cello, double bass, backing vocals and silver flute blended together with the computer wizardry of Simon Posford's studio production. Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen) has long had a reputation as the, 'Hallucinogenius' a imitable pioneer in sound experimentation. Raja Ram, is the innovative sonic co-pilot producing alongside Simon and providing inspirational artwork for the album covers and the website as well as his unmistakable flute solo's in C Major. Shpongle has been a working project since the release of their 1998 album ”are you shpongled?” filtered out into the underground. http://www.shpongle.com

HALLUCINOGEN
Hallucinogen (live) aka Simon Posford is a pioneer of electronic music and founder of the psychedelic trance scene. With the release of his first album, "Twisted", which reached Number 27 in the French album charts, a genre was born. There are many words to describe modern electronic music but none that come close to the wealth of emotion and experience that comes from listening to a Posford tune. These days he is just as likely to be entrancing crowds around the globe with a throbbingly epic live set as he is to be dribbling ambient delectations in the Hallucinogen Soundlabs in the West Country. He is co-director of Twisted Records with Simon Holton, ex-label manager of Dragonfly Records. Their label is one of the hottest underground gatherings of talent this side of Mars. Hallucinogen's second album "The Lone Deranger" blew the lid off the musical scene that had built up around his influence. Not only did it have more of the killer musical riffs but also was a feat of clean production and professionalism previously seen with the likes of The Floyd, one of Simon's major influences. Another tune that influenced Simon was "The Age of Love" by Jam & Spoon and this can be heard in some of his earlier releases. More recently he has produced tracks with Benji Vaughan as their band Younger Brother, Simon Posford has completed new sounds with Dub 'Ott' & Hallucinogen and is currently collaborating with the Twisted Allstars and touring the world spreading his music to all sorts.

The decor and the venue itself was really nice, however this was the last night-party I'll have gone to..

The sound was quite poor - heavy distortion in the bass, the details of the music were smothered - and I love Simon's music... But my main issue was the time:

Hallucinogen didn't come on until 3AM - I mean, 3AM!? And Shpongle wasn't set to come on until 4 or 4:30AM - that is f*cking ridiculous - what is the point in having these things go on so late?

Why not have the party start at 5PM and the main act come on at like 10PM so people can get home and not have their whole next day shot because they were out until 7AM and of course needed all sorts of drugs (and the tendency toward speed, coke, and nasty shit like that) to make it through the night?

Does that support living a balanced and healthy life?

It just doesn't make any sense to me - and don't get me wrong, I like the music, and I like psychedelics, but there's a better way to do it IMO...

I would love to wake up at 9AM on a Sunday morning fully refreshed after 8 hours of sleep, and after hearing a top psytrance artist play the night before - instead of waking up at 3PM and having my whole Sunday wasted and my sleep pattern messed up...

No offense, but have you even attended an electronic music event before?

Anywhere between 1-3am is the standard time for headliners to go on... For outdoors it's sometimes 6am!

Seriously your post gave me a good

i am used to seeing main acts as late as 8-10am at outdoor parties.

and about the pissy post above, there is a simple approach to this: if the amount of things you don't like about an event outweighs the amount of things that you enjoy about it - don't come.

Yah I figured I'd get speared for that post But I call things like I see them..

I know that I have the option not to come, hence my saying in the first post that this will have been my last night party...

And yes I've I've been to lots of psytrance parties and am well aware that the headline act generally goes on at some absurdly early hour of the morning..

What I'm saying is that the whole system of doing it that way is backwards, IMO...

Who's idea was it to have the electronic music go all night, was it the rave scene or something? Where did that trend start? What exactly is the advantage of doing it that way? Seriously, I would like to know - and don't just say "because it's the way we do it" or "we've always done it that way" because thats just blind, unquestioning comformity..

Mixed feelings...

The sound was deffo not calibrated very well. That's just sad when the act is someone like Simon P.

Venue was very cool. I would go to other Psy events there for sure.

Crowd was nice - A good mixture of people and styles. Lots of beautiful women.

I personally felt that Simon's Hallucinogen set was maybe 50% uninspired. There were parts that just made me realize that the project is no longer his focus. But then there were parts that really got to me, and I was reminded why he got me into Psy 12 years ago. I also thought it would be longer.

Shpongle was cool, but I do think that an indoor venue is not ideal at all for that sort of morning act.

A little let down by the $40 cover. Just too much money for many people.

In general,....

We journey together through the dark and mischevious nighttime to arrive safely together, welcomed by sunrise, into the refreshing clarity and renewing joyous spirit of daybreak. This unites the dancefloor in positive spirits of epic proportions, the intensity of which usually corresponds to the heaviness of the nighttime psychedlia. The feeble minded will not and cannot subsist through a long dark night all the way through the AM....Dancefloor usually tends to have thinned by the AM, and only the ones with enduring spirits get truly rewarded with the cohesive bond of the dancefloor at sunrise.

how this equates to indoor parties, dont ask me, turning the lights on at the end doesnt count and is usually an abrupt buzzkill.

There have been daytime parties at the ranch which started real early in the AM and ended later that evening, no?

The reality check here might just be that you are getting old....

i tend to agree...i'm only 24 and even i thought 4am was too late.

anyway, that wasn't really even shpongle! it was simon (who is tru psychedelic), but i was under the impression it would be LIVE shpongle...anyway, had fun, but my ears were completely fucked afterwards.

embjmt, many trance promoters schedule the headliners after 2am when most of the clubheads (as opposed to the tranceheads) clear out after last call. We don't want drunks souring our vibe!

For many, the overnight aspect of electronic parties is part of the transformative experience - existing in darkness to be born again into the light. Granted, this experience is much more profound out of doors.

Not to dis Simon, but did he play the same 90-minute Gamma Goblins extended remix-based set he has been playing for the last x years? While it's a very impressive full-circle-from-sanity-to-insanity-and-back set featuring Hallucinogen's Greatest Hits (tm), he has played it with little variation the last three times he's performed here in Northern CA.

I did not attend the show at 1015 Friday because I knew it would likely be disappointing after the mind-blowing experience of Symbiosis last year.

I was really only interested in hearing the new Younger Brother material. How much new material did he play?

Box of Wine, Shpongle very rarely performs live with Raja Ram et al.

Ok I can see now what you mean about staying up through the night and seeing the sun rise, the transformative part of it all - I would agree that can be a very cool experience... And I shouldn't have been so scathing in my last couple posts, I could have been nicer about expressing my opinion...

I am 29, which isn't old definately, but it's not 18 - I can't figure out if it's actual aging, or if it's just that I'm sooo much more tuned in to what my body wants now than when I was 18 or even 23 or 26... I mean, I CAN stay up, thats not the issue, but I don't like to because I'm a disaster the next day... I start getting this mild background anxiety when I'm up all night into the next day, a feeling like I'm way out of equilibrium and un-centered...

My usual bedtime is like 9-10PM though, and I don't really like to dose strongly on anything at nightime indoor party type gigs, so by 3AM my whole body just starts saying "forget this, lets get outta here"... Hehe, I sound like a grandma or something...

Yah the ranch parties are great - I usually go to bed early the night before and try to get there at like 5AM so I can see the sun rise - that is very magical indeed...

About the Hallucinogen set - I heard a couple tracks in there I didn't recognize, (lol, but it may have just been the sound) - was some of that new material? I wasn't aware of any Younger Brother material played - the new album should be about out now too huh?

The Sunday encore if Shpongle/Hallucinogen would have played earlier I would have gone. For some people, it works but for those have have a 9-5 its kind of tough to make it out on weekdays. :S Maybe something to keep in mind.

Anyways I seen him @ Symbiosis last year. Quite a good show.           https://www.djjeto.com

There's absolutely no need to drink or take anything, man. In fact, I find that you get so much more out of the experience by playing it straight, with a sober mind...
