Hello gadget geeks

I'm about to buy my self a mp3 player so that when I start my globetrotter journey in a few months, I'll have enough music in my pocket to last me a lifetime. As far as I can see, the biggest and best mp3 player out there on the marked is a 160GB Ipod Classic (Black/Silver). Is this realy the biggest player on the marked? Wouldn't happen to know about other brands with future bigger storage? Maybe iPod will release a bigger storage model shortly and I should just wait? Any information, advice, talk and ect would be nice.

Thank you.

well, i know the zune (1st gen) uses simple 1.8 inches (i think thats the one) hd, so you can upgrade it to any size, just buy the spare hd ( there is a tutoria on how to change the hd, quite easy)

sucks it doesnt accept wav tho =/

but it is cool to do your mp3 player syncing without needing any cable, using only wifi to talk to the player =p           un-fucking-believable

I don't wanna sound like a smart ass, but think about it:

With a 160 GB iPod you can store more than 225 CDs with 80 minutes of music (80 minutes of music in .wav = 700 MB).

This means 300 hours (12.5 days) of music nonstop... So you'll have to recharge your iPod's battery somewhere, probably on a Laptop were you can re-synch the iPod and add new tracks to it.

So maybe it is better to go with this iPod and buy a Laptop with more Storage Space, or some USB HDs.

By the way, what is a globetrotter journey?

Hey brasirc, thanks for the very helpful advice, not bad at all But I think I will go for the iPod instead.

Full-on, no smartass vibes caught at all lol ^^ Well, your right. First of all, with globetrotter I ment I will travel the world, go backpacking in a few months. Thats why I'm looking to get the biggest possible. I got around 360 albums I would have liked to add to my mp3 player. And I'm not super sure if I'll take with me the laptop. I can buy it out of my work deal, or I can return it, which means I will be without a laptop. And the money I save by not buying out the laptop will taste good on my trip. So it kind of depends on that from your views. I guess I'll just buy the 160gb and add the albums I realy like instead of adding it all.

Maybe, hopefulle the price of the iPod will have sunk by the time I'm ready to buy it, or they will have launched a bigger one. I'll just have to wait and see.

Again, thanks for your words (both of you).

peace & love

i would suggest you try to get your hands on maybe a small 12 inch laptop (and one of those cheap small mp3 players for fooling around with)

mostly cause of wi-fi internet ( or if you're carrying a camera...), from my own experience, i can tell you that you can find a wifi spot (most of the times even a free one) almost any place nowadays(unless you're aiming for a bit more adventure, but then again you wouldnt even be able to recharge a player =p) and having that connectivity helps alot, and also eases up a few costs (skype, internet time...)

for the price you would pay for a 160gb ipod, you could prolly (maybe addings a few hundreds) get yourself a simple weak, or second hand laptop....or even one of those portable computers, smaller then a laptop, bigger then a mp3...

now...i reckon you prolly wouldnt find 160gb or more on such, but then again....with a third of your collecting any mortal would be entertained for a few months =p (or even for a few years ),

in the end...i would suggest taking a laptop instead of only a player, bag space could be a issue, but there is always a moment when a computer could prove useful, even if only to kill boredom or make yourself a quick diary =p

hmm.. actually, my laptop is a 12" XPS 1210 DELL. I've been thinking, and maybe I should buy it out of the office deal. It's realy cheap, and if money is my concern, I would make more selling it then not buying it. .. And hm, take the laptop with me on my journey, pictures, text, ect. Maybe not so silly afterall. I got some thinking to do. Thanks for the pointers mate, appreciate it.

even better, a 12" is alot easier to carry around...
im using a 15.4", just a example...was sailing for a bit and just to the this place on middle of bahamas, not much, 15$ burger and expensive as hell internet...but they offer free wifi, so im happy cause im killing a bit of my addiction...and talking to you folks ATM...

is fun...and is free sometimes i dont even have to go to land to get wifi signal, just by staying relatively near the marina i get free internet....is quite a luxury if you ask me =p           un-fucking-believable

iPod's support Wav right?

Also been thinking about the format to rip CD's in. I'm currently Importing original albums in to my iTunes/computer in Wav. This is because I heard the sound quality is the best when done in Wav. Minus is it takes far more space then mp3 and other formats. So the issue here is should I import my entire CD collection in Wav .. or mp3. Is the sound quality realy that huge that it's worth the space loss you get? Will it be noticed on a iPod? Guess it realy depends on your ears and you in the end. Any views?

Brasirc, your a realy lucky guy, getting to sail the 7 seas like old Captein Sabeltooth.

All the power to you, your father and your journeys!

I think you should really look at Creative Players...
I have had 7 mp3 players... and all creative and they are unbelievable.

Specially if you find the Creative Nomad Zen X.

It is less than half the space you get on an Ipod ... but the sound and features that come with it, Ipod cant even come close to that in the next 5 years.

Maximum space on an Creative is 60 GB though

Hope this helps.

do you work for creative or something??

i dont think theres any major different in the sound quality (even tho when zune was released, it was ranked with the best sound by reviews, prolly mostly rumours)..

and about features, i really dont see it beeing superior at all to other brands, wi nternet surfing, touchscreen, huge screen nano pods....i wanna see you beat that on a mp3 player...

all in all, IMO u should try other flavours before making such strong statement....           un-fucking-believable

2 reason i wouldnt go for a pod...

1. Its got that copy right thing so u can only download\upload on your own itunes and operate from there.

2. You cannot make a playlist on the go ... like sitting in your car selecting tracks thru genres and by albums and by artists... then u go into that playlist and shift tracks up and down... on a pod ... all that is possible but only with a computer

Also the creatives got a EAX (Enhance Audio Xperience) gives good sounds good features...
and the GUI is brilliant

Maybe i got a bit excited in my first post wid creative... i'd easily choose it over ipod... but i'd look at other players nevertheless.. havent got a chance yet though.

psytones,
if you're absolutelyyy sure ur gonna use it only for personal listening, then i guess , mp3s are gud!

but the sec, you take it to even on car speakers, mp3 sounds shit (when compared 2 wav...)

maybe put a mix of wav and mp3 files..who knows..maybe a party in jungle?:D
