that alesis cost around 50 euros i think second hand ,it was used all over electronic music back then, the plugin could be a good way to see if it worth spending a bit of money in the hardware box

PoM, never tried any Empirical Labs stuff I'm afraid! Would like to hear a pair of Distressors, just to see if they live up to all the hype.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

distressor after years love it more everyday , but not on buss (sometimes it can work nice though..)

it bring things into focus, forward in the mix. ( usualy guys like it on voice, drums, bass, synths )

if you wanna ear the coloration modes if you have some material like a part of a tune i could run it into, one mode smooth transient and soft clip the waveform ,adding third harmonics mostly, and one add 2 and 3and dont really clip as soon or soften transients

Thanks PoM! I'm only processing entire mixes/mastering here, so no need for tracking comps. Do you have a pair? Would love to hear subtle settings on a full mix.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

no sold one as i find it shine mostly on mono source , i just miss it for processing stereo softsynth but don t make music these days.

for buss it can be usefull if no better options..but would not recomend it for that .

what made them so popular is that they are well built, dont have issu and almost never sound bad . 1176 la2a ect can sound better.. but the distressor still sound good in comparaison making it no brainer for the price , if you dont have better options, it wiill still get the job done.. kind of great second choice.

cool, always wanted to try one, but also not making much music these days, so only useful to me in a mastering context etc.

very happy with my pair of germ comps, they'll never leave, although i am thinking of getting a foote control systems P3S ME (with the new class a mod) as a cleaner alternative.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

just tried the TDR for the first time, nice one ... i enjoyed more the dc8 though, a bit more natural, less conjested , could be how i set up the comps.. was just a short try.

yeah, the dude knows his stuff and is trying to achieve a similar transparency to extremely high end mastering compressors, which he has access to for comparison.

he's also implementing many very clever code tweaks to achieve ultimate transparency without oversampling etc. for a clean and transparent digital buss, mix and mastering compressor, i don't think i've heard any better.

like i said before, a totally different cup of tea to DC8C, which is also amazing, but that is way more coloured (in a good way!)           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

when using dc8c do you stick in easy mode or go in the complex one?
i haven t really gave the easy mode a try but maybe it work just fine for lot of stuff

on DC8C i've only ever played with the "easy" mode with the "smooth" setting on whole mixes. it usually sounds great. i'm a big fan of limiting my options to increase work-flow!

on another tangent, anyone tried vladg's molot comp and limiter6 limiter? i also thought they both sounded great for free:

and a great free EQ from bootsy/variety of sound, called "Baxter EQ":

i was using it a lot before i got the dangerous music bax. a lot of people reckon his analogue emulation stuff is great too, Density, Tesla, Ferric etc.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma
