Ahhh yes... Ravi has a special place in many peoples hearts including mine.

On a personal note, I feel very fortunate to have met one of Ravi's disciples... Stephen James, who primarily plays the sarod.
http://www.stephenjames.org/

Stephen lives here in Arizona, and I've been to a few intimate venues where he played and had a few extended conversations with him. He's defintitely a first class guy, as one would expect.

One of the most memorable times was attending a "bhajan" (sp? loosely translated to 'house party' i think) at a friends house who plays tabla. Stephen, Daniel and a tamboura player played a long rag... It seemed like eternity, but at the same time only the blink of an eye. I was definitely floating...

When they finished he said it had been over an hour... unbelieveable!!

i have to agree he is one of the best we have.

In India we have a whole lot of instruments which are truly amazing too.

just that i guess Pandit Ravi Shankar along with Ustad Allah Rakha Khan who was on Tabla played at Woodstock and hence these two are more famous and two instruments are known worlwide.

there is an anciient instrument called Rudra Veena which is quite spectacular too.

but just about five people play it in the world and no onw wants to make one for it is the instrument od the devils...

Rudra Stands for Devil or Demonic.
