This is quoted from the House Forum Clubplanet

I would have to say right around 1987 when TODD TERRY started putting the BBOY element into House music and taking it away from the discos and gay clubs was when the rave scene was born. Of course there was more Tech related stuff going on in europe, but the stuff that was coming out of New York and Chicago and Detroit was finally starting to leave the clubs and get exposed to a whole new generation who would become the "ravers" of the 90's

while i am not that schooled in the euro rave history, one cannot deny that frankie bones had a HUGE role in the US rave scene with his STORM RAVE parties from like 89-91, thats when Shit started to EXPLODE in the states.

"everywhere else in the world people have different means of naming parties."

Word.

In Mexico, almost any party indoors or outdoors (clubs excepted) that plays a form of electronic music are called raves. The psy trance scene has not seperated itself from the raves scene as in the US.           Laughter is the shape that darkness took around the first appearance of light.

i personally don't consider psy parties as raves. just my opinion

I totally agree... totally different crowd...
they tend to be referred to as psyparties here in Toronto... there is some crossover in crowd I will agree, but for the most part it is definitely different crowd... raves here tend to attract thugs, which are much less visible at psyparties...

actually it all started in late 70's San Francisco in the post-disco gay clubs. Music called high energy (not to be confused with NRG) Its horrible i dont recomend anyone listen to it, but thats where it all started
That in turn influenced the use of 4 -4 kicks, and brought about Detroit techno, (mid / late 80's) which in turn was exported to the UK, fused with the TB-303 and became Acid House. That started the rave movement. The UK than reguritated acid house back to the US gay clubs in Chicago and New York, where the mixed it with the already now indiginous Detroit Techno creating the early US rave sound that was pioneerd by the likes of Frankie Bones, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, etc etc....
Back in the UK acid house began spawing other genres, dnb, hardcore , house and eventually trance.
Goa trance in particular has unique roots which while tieing in with acid house and early techno it also did not follow the same developmental time line untill the mid / late 90's

and by a text book deffinition a psy party is a rave. A bunch of people in UV reactive wear, dancing wildly in front of a dj or act playing repative syncopated beats...
but from the standpoint what one may be getting back on a personal level, whether it be spirtuallity, vibe, or maturity psy parties have evolved past just a basic rave

...I would second this recommendation. There is actually a lot written about rave culture, as it relates to popular culture/subcultural studies..(I wrote my thesis in college on this...lol) but Simon Reynolds is probably the journalist who has focused his writing the most on this topic...so for sure its a good place to start.           ~gOa ist nicht nur musik sondern auch eine lebenseinstellung~

Funk all that everybody. watch "24 Hour Party People" it shows the change from punk to new wave into the first raves in england. the cover and title are rediculous but it really is a great movie.

I don't like to associate psy parties with raves either.

I only asscociate that name with mainstream electronic music. Americans have that shit bad too because like 90% of them associate all electronic music with rave. Even the americans who are into electronic music.

IMO, the word rave was meant for underground illegal parties where people got high as fuck with all types of shit while listening to music. I just feel that word takes away from the spirit of goa trance music, feeling, and culture.

Again, I consider psy events parties(and for outdoor, gatherings).

raves were the culmination of various diffrent movements coming together under a common music and mind at one massive party

it takes a couple books combined to tell the whole story...

Add "Techno Rebels" with "Generation Ecstacy" and "Raves: An Insiders Overveiw" for a pretty complete story.

who really cares what a party is called. to me there is no diffrence, if its called a rave or w/e else. if its good music its good music. i love DNB and breakbeat, some tribal house is really good, all musioc is good why try to seperate? soMETIMES I FEEL LIKE SOME PEOPLE JUST LISTEN TO ONE KIND OF MUSIC, WHICH IS BAD!i personaly think there should be a nice mix of music at a party, not one type, but also not too diffrent from the party. SHIT, these days everyone is so on edge. "THIS IS PSY TRANCE " "THIS IS NRG TRANCE " THIS IS PROG, FULLON....BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH WHO CARES . this is stupid im gonna wake up now and go to school bye

as voxmulox already pointed out...

I do not agree. And the reason you dont understand why I dont agree, is the reason why you can call raves and psytrance parties the same thing.

(also, specific to the U.S .... just because some raver kids come to psytrance parties, doesnt mean that the trance party is the same as the Rave. it probably means that the raver kids dont know how to tell the difference.... and the ones that can tell the difference usually dont go back to the raves...)
