Artist : Quantize
Title : Time
Label : Iboga rec.
Format : CD
Release date : nov 08

Tracklist
01. Tricks of light
02. 2012

05. Time
06. Enlighten
07. The Perfect Drug
08. Monkey and the Rabbit Shoulders, (with BLT)
09. Lysergic Adventures

After a string of releases had garnered the attention of such labels as Dooflex, Domo, and Blue Tunes, the Israeli duo comprising Reshef Harari and Adi Ashkenazi, better known as Quantize, was promptly spotted on the musical radar by the heads of Iboga records. The ensuing single releases at the Copenhagen-based label and their remixes have paved the way for their debut album, now released under the title of “Time”. Needless to say, this is one of the end of the year’s most anticipated releases.

1. Tricks of Light
The album starts rather softly with the rhythmic arsenal smothered and filtered until the first ellipitic motif is introduced, shredded by powerful reverbs and transposed until the break establishes a more ominous atmosphere. It epitomizes and maximizes the delay fx, which are also applied to the eponymous voice sample playing up across the stereo field. The last sequences launch some truly monsterous synths with more theatrical effects and spicy percussions. This is a great dance floor magnet, and a very impressive introduction both for the mastering and the right to-the-point use of effects as well as for the expert sense of construction!

2. 2012
This futuristic title unveils a nice galloping and pitch-shifting wandering bassline and some cool riffs in the first half, punctuated by the intervention of a Black voice sample. They evolve towards a plain melody in the second half, not very catchy, but cogently contributing to the track’s internal variation. Again, a reliable DJ tool.

3. High Frequency
The track is a collab with Psy Prog Master Ace Ventura. No fluff in there, just a single note repeated, and then a drippling motive contrasting with the bewitching appearances of large zooming pads. They evolve in a register that evokes all the ways you could possibly torture and make a piece of rubber squeak. The break is as theatrical as you’d wish for and the return of the fierce rhythm machine brings about an appropriate voice sample, and develops more full-onish whip hits. Another dancefloor monster.

4. Nightmosphere
The aptly named “nighmosphere” is another collab, this time with Israeli colleague O. Grinker. It unreels more spooky, pitch bent melodic material, which is then further developed as an unreal, lysergic serenade with more contrasted moody chord strikes which swipe across the stereo field. It rocks in a softer mode at 130 bpm, and nicely changes the atmosphere in the album.

5. Time
“Time” starts simply on a single note motif that eventually turns into a discreet lead in the second half. The break introduces an electro flavoured transposed theme that comes along with the voice sample. It is fully developed in the final bars, and again, shows a nice concern for build-up and construction. Another dance floor magnet.

6. Enlighten
This sixth track is the one that most obviously resorts to full-on devices. It unfolds a charging, thomping rhythmic combo, which gradually picks up more pronouced hi-hat drive. The spaced out, low-fi, zooming synth and saw-like riffs of the first half open onto a break and are classicaly swapped for the spooky theme of the final bars, eventually backed by rolling and rattling arrangements. Well done again. Only, it does sound like pitched down full-on.

7. The Perfect Drug
“The Perfect drug” is derived from the same pattern as the above: the abbreviated theme receives full-fledged reverb, just like the voice sample in the break which takes up the title. The arpeggio that teeters at the end is formulaic and run-of-the-mill: at this point it reeks of full on. A bit too much to my ears.

8. Monkey & the Rabbit Shoulders
Once again, this funnily-named track is a prestigious collaboration with one of the most acclaimed and much lauded Israeli producers. The percussion arrangements in the backdrop, the way the bassline rocks softly, as in a morning sunrise, treading the line between an atmospheric feel and an altogether more psychedelic touch, the way the theme is contained at first, then twisted up, tortured and finally treated with all kinds of theatrical effects definitely bears the signature of Progressive hero, Yuli Fershtat, who makes a surprising, and much appreciated appearance in this album under his BLT guise, his former full-on project. Definitely one of the highlights in this album.

9. Lysergic Adventures
The Duo draws the concluding line with a track that, once again, pays a tribute to the æsthetic and weird epic, sensory and mental experiences that the Swiss genious chemist cleared the scene for. As usual, a 3 mn prelude, featuring a lead that bobbles on top of a bouncy bassline, lays the foudation for filtered, pitch bent, soaring trance pads and surging fills that purr with extra strongly delayed rubbery riffs. The acid feel is present but not overpowering. It is a nice concluding piece in any case.

Bottom line
Quantize fully exploits the opportunity to explore the boundaries of psy-prog and have delivered an album packed with dance floor orientated cuts with which they confirm their strong reputation. For those who like their prog psy-ish and with full-on accents, it is simply a must have. Those allergic to that trend could still be seduced by the Duo’s real concern with, and craft for, track construction and the nice energy it encapsulates, even if it does not avoid formulaic recipes all the time. In any case, congrats to Iboga for releasing such a flawlessly produced album from quite a young act. No doubts it is destined to be hammered on the world scene in the months to come.

I love this album! every track is packed with groove, power, deep vibes and PSYCHEDELIA!
I hope i will be able to "journey out" in the desert or forest to these sounds, something about the way this album is put together feels so right, really delicate mixture of all the needed components....

my favorites are "Tricks of light" and "Lysergic Adventures" but really love all the tracks in between as well...

Thanks for this musical trip!

Cheers,
Yair
