hi!

i am a big fan of the ultimae family, chillcode, chilltribe, native state etc.. i could go on for a while..

the music these labels/artists put out is simply fantastic. and i dont think this is because i like this particular genre, but it's because the production itself sounds so great.. it is so carefully crafted..

it is in lack of a better word.. perfect.

how come these artists aren't more recognized? i mean.. look at DJ Tiesto and his friends in the trance genre.. they make millions.

is chillout/ambient too complex? too simple? what is it? how can these labels grab the attention of a large scale population?

stupid post perhaps, but i've had these thoughts for a while now. had to share.

respectfully,

"People like crap. They've always loved crap." -Julian Casablancas

I agree..downtempo and freestlye artists should be more recognized..I think that it takes a certain "Musical maturity" that people don't have and aren't ready for to see the beauty in music as artistic as it is.

I'm confused about that too Xerxes because it seems that everyone who "listens" to music, young or old, finds something they can relate to within the ambient/chillout genre.

Maybe because its not dance oriented music and about events that are attended by thousands of fanatics. Its more of a one-on-one experience with the music. So for me I find my answer in believing that there are many more stupid people in this world than intelligent aware ones.

I would not say that the ones, who have not found chill out yet are stupid, they just have not found it yet
And that could also be one big reason for the fact that chill out is relatively unpopular, it`s because most people stop their music hearing evolution after they turned on their radio the first time. So it gets kind of hard for the not-radio-stuff to become radio-stuff, because everybody loves the radio stuff.

It's a niche music. No money=no promotion=no recognition by the masses.

first off I must say man your mom is cool! all my mom hears is "noise" when she walks by or goes to sleep (her word)...

In my opinion it's a special music genre which doesn't attract many people because of its unique sounds. I always say one has to have a special ear to like this type of music...

p.s
It will be nice to say 'hey we're smart, they aren't' but it's not true (maybe it's the other way around). This is music. Different tastes...
But then again maybe we are the smart ones here

Interesting thread xerxes
I have the same thoughts from time to time.

Maybe because in order to appreciate good chillout you really need to listen to it, probably alone, without being constantly distracted by other things… a little bit like meditating. You need to tune-in, so to speak, to really let the music take you. I guess most people “do not have the time” to listen to music this way. Many people these days, I find, do not REALLY listen to music, they just hear it while doing other things.
Also, chillout music has no words, which makes it more difficult for the restless mind to handle… it forces it to relax and really go with the music.
In a way, it is similar to trace music, which also requires real and deep “tuning-in”, but with trance music you can dance, usually with the help of some chemicals – which really help. Chillout, on the other hand, is more meditative… (I’m repeating myself )
I think we should feel really lucky that there are such great artists out there, who share their superb music with us, even though they do not make as much money as other more “mainstream” musicians.

It's thE Music, and why you people saying that it's not dance-able? start some shpongle sound or younger brother or any good artist in that genre, and if i know the track ill be dancing, it's danceable, it has beat, maybe not to dig and stick your brain into the wall, but it is danceable music with great beats!
there are many kind of ambient and more which are very relaxed but if you catch the beat and there is a very good beat in some of the major artists in that scene, it is fun and danceable, I can dance to some of those tunes while others can fall asleep. and the music, the whole electronic genre is rising, it will take time..

I guess the big difference is that somebody like DJ Tiesto is very commercialy oriented, his managment and label have considerable more money then the labels in our scene.

They are also more `professional`. If you can affort to spent 2-300.000 or more on promoting an artist he will be known. Trance labels hardly have 5-10.000 in cash, no promotion what so ever other then the occational ad in mushroom mag or here on Isratrance, hardly doing anything.

Gunter... I know what I said probably makes me sound like an ass. But I've lived in rural midwest USA for 4 years now. (Indiana) You cannot imagine how many closeminded (musically and otherwise) stupid people I have to deal with every day.

... I play and give chillout music to most people I've hung out with. The style that seems to appeal to most is the Cafe Del Mar/ Buddha Bar series. Especially the first 2-3 in each of the series. Classic goodness! You're right about the radio thing though... record corporations controlling the minds of the masses.

xerxes you aren't alone with your question

i was lucky that i knew from a friend that knew someone from ultimae so that i had the label here and their newsletter from almost the time they were founded

i am thus a big fan of their music and made it to hear to anybody i knew lol

but yes the others are right: nobody really hears from a label like ultimae unless you let them hear it most of them are stunned this music exists

i think people are starting to know it but that it is a matter of years in order to do so

btw off topic but as it is playing here your music sounds cool never heard of it till i joined in here two days ago...

yup while reading all the topics i am listening to some sets you all posted here...

nice journey

I strongly believe that it will take a bigger scene in a near future, new generation coming will be more open to chill out type of music and will achieve the maturity, which in my point of view is necessary, to appreciate it more.

There are tons of chillers everywhere, my dad who is 55 listen a lot of new age type of music...but stuff like bluetech is just too much for his head lol

So, IMHO, it is too complex for most of people around my dad's generation and requires a little more of maturity to be appreciated , maturity that was not achieved yet by most of people in our scene. It is much more than just the fact that the big label companies kind of control the mass opinion..and I say that because even at the trance parties the appreciation is not that big, we can count in our hand the number of people enjoying the chill out area most of the times

If they really knew what it is about they would realize that it is much more than just a place to take a nap.

Just my two cents
Intersting discussion btw

actually now that it pops in mind...

in time there has ben a style of music that encountered the same problem... and that was jazz.

it had in it's time the same barriers as ambient and other experimental music has nowadays...

thought it was maybe an interesting thought to toss in too...
