helloz everyone
i was thinking (yeah, one of those moments..) about all the threads people write here about quality productions. and then there are so many artists writing with not so good quality who sell a lot and the others with the equipment who have best quality production and sell a lot, too.
ok, music is not an objective matter. but....
does intensive work on sound quality come above music quality? people want to listen to good music in good quality, but what is the most important thing for you out there....
do you need to listen loud crystal sound or the 'trip' is what you need most...
i agree that when both is achieved it's the best but whoever knows a lot about sound and mastering and all this, knows very well that a loud mastering can kill the essence of music. in other words (to express my opinion) how about leaving the music to tell her story, with the volume just slightly lower to let every sound in the track reveal itself..?
if you want loudness, just turn up the volume 
and because i don't want to be misunderstood... i don't speak about clearness of sound... i speak about massiveness and loudness...
i would give examples with artists but i don't want to start a conversation about who is good and who's not..
any thoughts..?

i think that the crystal sound is not the most important thing, killer music is way more important. but when the both are achieved the music will be awesome.
music quality is the main goal of music...(cheezy line)
i think that clear sounds can be achivied easier than great music. the whole mastering thing is mainly lot of experience with music, the rest is way harder to make!

For me music quality is the most important thing.
GMS for example dont have good music ideas but they have amazing quality and thats what makes them so good.
Thats my humble opinion offcourse.

Trance is about sound. Simon Posford - as good with the melodies as he is - is no Hendrix. Yet his music is something special. Yes, there are other things in trance, but lets not forget that good sound work can make the stupidest line sound amazing (Koxbox - Stratosfear, THE drive there is something that would totally suck without the amazing sound work). After all there are only 12 notes in an octave, play around enough and you'll get a good melody. You can't say that trance has anything music-wise to offer that jazz doesn't have. But finding a sound that'll make it unique and memorable, as well as making it danceable and most importantly - makes it good music. Our minds are open to more than just games on chords and scales.
Of course you shouldn't ignore things like structure and music, but don't forget that what makes trance what it is isn't just melodies and harmonies. We shouldn't be ashamed of that.

well, ideally you want high quality production and great music right? but i think it is fair to say a poorly produced piece of incredible music will be easier to forgive than the worlds shiniest track that is totally deviod of musical merit.. maybe..

a reason how good idea turn into killer trak is a qulaity sound. without it it will stuck as a good idea only.

ok i agree a little with almost everybody...
but i hate it when somenone listens to a musically great track and quickly he says hey this track is awfull cause "that artist" has better quality in his tracks. it's irrelevant. especially when the same track with better quality from a known artist would propably make it one of his favourites... give music a chance...
of course i'm not talking about awful production here... i hate that, too...
but i do not need THE BEST...
maybe there a lot who disagree but i believe that if everybody thought of it like this, it would help music itself...

Gotta agree on this. Tracks which sound good are also much better storywise because you just hear the story much better. You hear all the details that might have been left out without the good sound.

take infected's "gathering"... most of the tracks are good imo but the main reason i don't like it is that the production quality is bad, its not awfull but i just can't enjoy that way...

Ahh Kaz, i could hear you praise Simon or anyone from Twisted for days and not get tired. Anyway, Saiko-Pod Phutures and Options album is amazing quality but the substance isnt that great...... i might not be adding anything, just thought i should mention that the combination of the 2...

You can throw 200 mil $ on a film with Kevin Costner and loose big time or you can invest couple of millions on Usual Suspect and get a gem.

Quality is always secondary. If the music is bad, super mega quality wont make it better. But if the music is good, quality can make it even better. But its always secondary.
