Hi i just signed up on this site to learn more about producing psytrance. I need some help in creating a good sounding bass. I am using ableton version 8 and Albino 3 and FM7 VSTs. I cannot seem to come up with a nice thick bass and drum combo. I am very new to this altough i have worked with ableton creating more euro trance and house but no psy. Any help would be appriciated! Thanks!

It takes a few months reading guides.

Use a low saw, cut the top, cut low end with EQ to allow kick and remove highs.

nobody knows in fact how to create the perfect bassline, pro's hide their bass recipes in ultra security safeboxes, there is a legend tho that says everything begins with KBBB, small envelope settings and perfect cutoff freq.

yes.
some say you can layer a low bass with a mid bass...
some say you can use automation on some notes for spice!
That's a mystery!

Sometimes it's not that hard to get a good bass..
Like someone said before, the real deal is to get the perfect Kick+bass combo.
It takes time!

Cronox is a good place to start, but it's not really about the synth; it's about knowing the synth/equipments/soundsystem and trusting your ears.

some tricks:
-cronox 2 saw with short decay, 50% sustain&release, cutoff 40-120hz
-light hp 20-40hz
-multidynamics for tighten up lower frequencies and giving punch for highs. <midfq fast attack&release and >midfq >25ms attack and fast release. Kills dynamics from bottom and gives more percussive detail for highs
-add 1st EQ to cut all shit resonances (by sweeping spectrum with high Q) (Sonnox EQ)
-add 2st EQ to fit the bassline to a song(low Q and something like 4 band EQ) (Waves SSL)
-add sidechain compressor or sidechain EQ to avoid conflicts with kick. Automation is ok.
-compress them in a group

use some hardware synth samples, more clean, more depth ,romplers like trilogy
i wonder if using a filter and a envelop modulation on it is really needed, if it sound good wihtout dont bother using one ,but it all depends the track and the bassline sound you want.

Yeah it's not really a matter of the synth used as much as personal preference.

I'm quite confident I can make a bassline with any synth, but I can't get anything I like for bass out of albino, which I use for pretty much everything else that isn't bass.

Also just a little EQ should be all that is needed and the real effort is in the programming.

Shifu: (to Po) Teaching kung fu(psytrance) is an art that takes years to master. (glances at the bunny students) Do not be disappointed if you failed. (Turns to a student) Tell me, what do you know about Kung Fu(psytrance)?
Student 1: Uhhhh.
Student 2: (Cuts in) It's about fighting(bassline)! (Shifu looks disapprovingly at Po, but then the student continues) But it's also about having patience.
(All the other students jump in.)
Student 3: And courage.
Student 4: And discipline.
Student 5: And compassion.
Student 1: (Finally can speak) Uhhh, it builds Confidence?
(Shifu looks surprised at Po, who just smiles.)
Shifu: (Surprised and impressed) Well, uh, you carry on, Master Po. (Starts to leave, feeling more relaxed) I'm going to meditate. (Leaves)
[Last lines; Po's about to leave after successfully teaching the children the secrets of kung fu(psytrance).]
Bunny Child: (to Po) Wait Po, what about you?
Po: Me?
Bunnies: Yeah! Tell us about your first day! Tell us! Come on, tell us!
Po: (after remembering all the bad memories he had when he first came to the Jade Palace, surprisingly gives the children an excited smile) It was totally awesome!

I like the old Muon Tau and the Muon electro.
No one pays attention to them anymore.
Steinberg CS40 is cool too!

VB-1 is also nice, but for tiny basses imo.
I'm not into Cronox! Don't like it much
