Hi! I'm new to the site and generally to the genre -- Anyway... I just finished watching the movie Scratch again and noticed a similarity between some of the scrichity-scratch and tweeky psytrance space lasers....I am wondering if their are any psytrance artists the incorporate turntablism into their live acts or their music.

I used to when I played vinyl, I can only really think of Dino Psaras now, who does a lot of quickfast cutting-and-slicing. No scratching, but definetly still a turntABLEist.

It works in nice with some of the proggy and minimal styles... have some maes who mix reak with techy/minimal psy and it works great with some typical break beat style mixing...

Thanks for the responses!

Hmm.. perhaps the scarcity is due to the decline of (?) vinyl ? Another unusual instrument that would be rad to see incorporated live would be a Theremin !
-- And lots of crazy homebuilt analog electronics...but that is a different thread!

The general view is that psy trance tracks are not to be messed with - they are generally composite and not suitable for layering or mashing beats, let alone beat mixing

Starspine was ticked off back in the days when he was making a transit from a techno dj - he was cutting and messing about with tracks, once he started playing one trak into another, the psy trance gurus gave a sigh of relief. (Rustlers '97)

But those CDJ1000 are really good beasts to do such tricks with - take a listen to James Zebelia's latest double CD 'Alive' (Prog House meets Breaks) to see what can be done, no need for vinyl

I think CDj's are much more appropriate for psy mixing... first of all scratching and psy dont really go together... and also with CDjs you actually have wider range of controle over the track.. for example making loops etc... and some of the effects (if they are used in a subtle way and not too often) or putting inpoints into memory / hotstart points.. etc... which people dont do much but its availble if you need it... and can be very useful for quick-cut mixing if you want to do it... or for mixing out of tracks and back in at a later point... and so on....

also on a more hardware level... I've been to an outdoor party, a dj was playing in the day, it was quite warm... basically the records started warping and souding really awful because they had slightly melted... also gusts of wind were moving the needle... on a huge system that sounds horrific. also the ease for a DJ to get to parties / get into the zone, play, and out and then not to have too much to worry about... your CD case in a bag works alot better than lugging around tons of records...
but the bottom line in my opinion, is that the mixing style and character of trance music and mixing can be achieved by CDj's much better than turntables.           www.facebook.com/DjJanux

Funny you should mention that, cause the same thought went through my head when I read this post. I've seen it done and it doesnt sound half bad! Even those small effects on the CDJ's also sound pretty cool           :: Life can be as bitter as dragon tears
But whether dragon tears are bitter or sweet
depends entirely on how each man perceives the taste ::

i am not of the same opinion, if done well it could create another genre all together, u never know...

have to keep experimenting, not just with cds but vinyls, live scratch etc..
