I am listening to Trance and Psychedelic music for a year or so and it's the only music that takes me mentally to a place better than this f****** world ! I want to go deeper into this style of music . Can anybody tell me the styles of Psychedelic/Trance/Goa music and some groups that represent them ? For example if you want to make a good dj set , can you complex all the styles of Psychedelic music and still sound great ? To all artists keep making kickass psy music !

Hey KillJoy, welcome to the forum. Here's how i see the whole genre:

Psychedelic Trance: Let's see it as the umbrella that gathers all the different styles together underneath it nowadays. Some of them are loosely connected to it (in my humble opinion).

Goa: It's where it all began (as far as psy-trance music concerned). Born at the beautiful shores of Goa. Main represantatives: Astral Projection, The Infinity Project, MFG, Green Nuns of the Revolution and more..
Full-On: Mainly melodic and fast paced music. Has several sub-genres like:
Melodic (morning) full-on lead by artists like: Astrix, Space Cat, Dado, GMS, Silicon Sound, Talamasca.
Dark (Night) full-on lead by artists like Skazi and the whole Chemical Crew, and there's the Russian Dark Full-on with artists like Psykovsky, Parasense and more.
Neo (progressive) full-on lead by acts like: Sub6, Pixel, Domestic, Hujaboy and more.

Progressive: Hard to define it, but it's probably everything that not falls in the full-on category nowadays. These are the main sub-genres: Scando-Prog, which is lead by labels like: Digital Structures and Spiral Trax. With artists like: Son Kite, Tegma, Ticon, Atmos, Human Blue and more.
German Prog/Minimal: There are a lot of artists each having it's own sub genre. I am not a big fan of this genre and can't say much. But i can mention artists like: Shiva Chandra, SBK, X-dream, Midimilliz, The Delta and more.
And there are lots of different sub genres like Psy Chillout, Finnish Trance and other stuff.

i think u cant really put *X-Dream *Midimiliz and *The Delta in the same group as Shiva Chandra(Minimal)....
the one big genre that u did not mention is TechTrance(view above*) other than that good explanation
cheers.

today, most of the artists starting to make new names for their own trance style.
(sometimes they sound the same...)
that all creates confusing situasion, when we try to find the right names.
in every sub genre there's many styles.
for example: skazi's genre is nighty full-on, and his style called hard core dancefloor trance...

for psybreaks, check out Deviant Electronics - blunt instruments

very nice CD, I like it alot.

also, some guy on the net (GoaMind) made a CD called Drum'n'Bass which is a bit more on the DNB side of things but does have some psy infulence that I really enjoyed, its only a net-only thing, forget where I found it.

OK Pavel, I'll complete this:

It started out not as goa, but as an offshoot of the techno world with Sven Vath and Har-El Pruski (later to become half of California Sunshine). While it started out as techno without the rigid grooves and without the copy-paste orienation but instead worked on high energies, moving from melody to melody and just generally doing all kinds of tricks on the sound that have never been heard before), until it finally evolved into the classic goa trance style led by Astral Projection, MFG, Doof, Green Nuns of the Revolution, MWNN, Prana (and basically everyone on TIP, Phonokol and Dragonfly records).

In 1995, Hallucinogen released Twisted, and so Psytrance was finally differentiated from goa trance. The moving from melody to melody became less important than the atmosphere behind the music, and instead of the free-flowing attitude there came a well structured journey through sound. After that album, the scene was never again the same - Koxbox, Union Jack, Tristan (up to 2001), The Antidote, Hallucinogen and quite a few more.

Then came full-on - in it's first phase an offshoot of psytrance with acts like GMS, Quirk, Psychopod, COP and first and foremost Tim Schuldt who single-handedly revolutionized the party world, offering the atmospheres of psychedelic trance with extremely high energy levels, but leaving the goa ideals in favor of a more organized musical direction (back to the techno roots in a way).

Of course, then Atmos and Son Kite quickly showed yet another path. Enough of chaotic energy, time for a more ordered groove and direction, going deep instead of just hitting as hard as possible. Atmos, Son Kite, Vibrasphere, Bitmonx, Ticon and Tegma are all very good examples of this.

The moove from this music to minimal was a very natural thing, as minimalists started showing that with machine precision you can get both the groove and the power you want into a track, and thus we had Shiva Chandra, XV Kilist, Paste, Cujorious One and so on.

From this to techtrance was also a natural move, with X-Dream, The Delta, Midi Milliz, Authentik, Triac and the such, all with their gothic atmospheres and harsh techno droning in a psytrance shell.

Then there are the modern full-on genres, I believe Pavel covered that nicely.

There's the Finnish psytrance, Australian oldschool (Nick Taylor and so on) and a lot more subgenres that are really underground (and in the two mentioned here, psy-breaks are more than just a few odd tracks). You can get ridiculously accurate with your definitions, but then you'd have to be a walking dictionary which probably doesn't sound like a good idea to most of us.

Hope I've been of help.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

Wow, thanks kaz.....that was a really nice breakdown of how the genres appeared.

One note though: Pavel made this description - "Neo (progressive) full-on"

Why not just call it funky trance. I class artists such as Sub6, Pixel, Dynamic, Wrecked Machines, Panick and the like to make this style that is IMO uniquly different. It makes you all funny and naughty when you hear it. I often laugh at some of these tracks, so much fun           :: Life can be as bitter as dragon tears

What do you mean by overdone?? You mean too many ppl try to produce it and play it?? And why not? It's amazing and IMO very musical to the ear.           :: Life can be as bitter as dragon tears
