seems like there was a whole storm of discussion over at the aforementioned thread. ...mainly centering around who thought what-means-what, followed by some dissing of various style name choices.....so it's a big pissing war?

one poster even raised the issue of "why bother even differentiating between styles?" or words to that effect. well it seems like the whole point is to catagorize, so the more catagories there are available the easier that job might be.

also, saying that style names are "stupid" or that you don't like them, is kind of pointless since even though it might not be your style of choice, it is for someone else.

a lot of people use isratrance to keep track of music they are already familiar with, but this totally discounts the population of users that imploys isratrance to find new music they haven't heard before. in terms of identifying something as potentially enjoyable, having more discriptors would appear to be
useful.

and finally, it is most interesting to say that two seperate descriptors can be combined to equal a new style and that no new sub-genre is needed, as in this exchange,

Bissia - a lot of those styles are not really needed. MANY of
them simply describe crossover styles:

in Electronic :
Freestyle - Under consideration for some time now... fair enough
Electro-Funk - funk + electro
Ambient Dub - dub + ambient
Dark Ambient - light ambient? Mellow ambient? Descriptive styles are generaly not accepted
Chill-core - What? made-up-core? Happy-core? etc
"

saying that cross-over styles and descriptive styles are unnecessary actually negates the cultural and social context within which the music was developed/composed.

does anyone know if "psybient" or "psy-chill" is being considered for addition to the subgenre list?

I dont think anyone would argue that decriptors are unnecessary (other wise you'd come out of the shop with a Ugandan hip hop CD instead of the Polish tech-funk one you were after) - but as far as I know there is no one big list for anyone to accept or deny new additions to - if you think a term decribes what your trying to describe then just use it

I don't think Ten Madison and Oliver Jones are psybient, even though they're on psyshop and everything..
So yeah the level of "psy" in ambient music varies a lot..just something you gotta tell by listening.

either way, it is all just chill..so same purpose

see, a lot of the music that gets thrown under the "chillout" umbrella isn't really chill....it just happens to have a slower BPM.

my friends and I started calling it PsyDM

I'm against it. As a "genre" it's very miniscule and difficult to differentiate from other types of armchair electronic listening music. Besides, the name is hardly used much (and also crap).

If psybient is accepted, I'll be rallying for ambient dub, Berlin school, drone and dark ambient too.
