Problems in explaining what psytrance is

I have a huge problem here when i let my friends listen to what psy is. I show them a OSOM track 'Game - Over', some of them would say "holy shit, mad techno you got there!" If i let them here something more melodic like Black & White - 20 for 7, "Oh nice stuff, is that Tiesto? You are cool man!". Grrrrrr!! Christ~~ Now how do tell them the difference between cheesy trance and techno and etc from psytrance! I cant just say psycho music right? Please help  |

My sister thinks I'm listening to the same track over and over again. You can't really explain or show people how the music is. They have to have their on experience of it. Usually I just say, when people ask me what I listen to, I explain it's a kinda of trance music, but not again. It's psychedelic trance... and then the explanation stops. If they want to know more, they can ask... they usually don't!
You can't listen to psychedelic music for the first time, if you're not openminded about electronic music. |

Not everyone can recognize the difference between Tiesto and Black and White.
I bet most people here wouldn't be able to distinguish between classical music from the medival period to modern classical music (and hey, that's like... very basic stuff...  ).
Some people just don't get it, but most people wouldn't "get it" eventually.
If your friend says that this "Tiesto" track is good, give him the entire Full On 7 CD and wait for him to come back and ask for more Tiesto |

Damn...thanks for the reply. I think it is just that people wouldnt get it till they hear it like how it started amongst ourseleves. But is maddening when they say that psy something else not as innovative as psy. Dont u hate it when they just call you Techno-Boy! It aint no techno! Maybe i should let him hear the entire full on 7 TiMMY  |

two things...
first... it's like raider say's. people who don't like it or don't apresiate it say it's noise.
second... if someone tells me when i say i here psy-trance that it's techno or like tiesto, i tell them that it's simular, just add more elements. more weird noise's that make you kinda leave your head and go somewhere else... |

chobo why bother explaining to people who dont have a clue bout the music
why bother enlightening ill informed souls
what i do is i dont play any psy in front of my friend who donot appreciate/understand it....
i dont want them to insult the music
so next time ure friends comeover tell them to get their own music

you know there arent any like-minded people here, at least in your area there are people who listen to psy and whom you can talk to about it. Its lonely here, only i listen to it. Thank goodness this forum is around! What a blessing! I let them here , who knows they might like it like what acidmantra said |

good pt satlanny. when ppl are unfamiliar with a style of music they will honestly tell you what it sounds liek. dont be insulted if they say shpongle sounds like dido.(its happened to me before). everyone has ears and none are better than anyone elses. black and white is like tiesto. bach is like mozart. relatively.

man, when i think about it; its quite difficult to know - suppose its how funky it is to the listener - i never play stuff too serious for non-psymates
when i explain psychedelic to someone new - i try the most cosmic - mind expanding explaination i can muster at the time.
e.g.
Once epsilon_iridani dreamed he was a butterfly, a f1uttering butterfly. What fun he had, doing as he pleased! He did not know he was iridani. Suddenly he woke up and found himself to be iridani. He did not know whether iridani had dreamed he was a butterfly or a butterfly had dreamed he was iridani. Between iridani and the butterfly there must be some distinction. This is what is meant by the transformation of things. This is Psychedel..ic...ic

Many people ask me what is the difference between techno and psytrance. I give my best to explain it to them. The problem is, many people think that everything is TECHNO! Drum and bass, house, noise, psytrance...it's all techno. Some people can't distinguish that techno has hundreds of different styles. How can you possible explain it to them?
Once i was listening to Cor by The Green Nuns Of The Revolution, and this guy aked me where did i get that METAL tune!!!

I'm a lone psytrancer as well over here in the US, and from what I've found.... You need to get your friends in the right position. You don't need to explain it after that. Meaning, you and your buds just came from the bar, and a bit tipsy... Or, just got done smoking a spliff, and hitting up the fast food joints. Throw some tunes in and play it loud. While their attention is only focused on the loud racket blarring from your speakers, a massive smile will appear on their face. You'll hear reactions like... "holy shit!", or "damn, who is this?". At that point you have them trapped. They have been tainted with psy, and there is no turning back from there.  |

well i'm lucky that most of my friends are pretty openminded (besides the guy living in the front of my house, who usually shouts "fuck psytrance!! goa is gay!!" etc from the balcony when i'm listening to music with opened windows) and i'm pretty openminded as well. i dont have much friends into this music, three to be exact, most of the people i'm together with are into punkrock or black/hiphop music, which are both very popular in switzerland. i dont mind it all, i know now that they love their music just like i do, that they think their music is magic somehow just like i do, that a fast guitar riff or a deep wobbling bass layered with a sexy female voice singing dirty semi-erotic stuff can send shivers down their spine as well, just like good psytrance music does in me. when we're together we usually listen to a bit of everything, and i'm always happy when they say to me: "hey this is cool, i like it!" and vice versa they're happy if i say "hey this new nelly tune really kicks ass!"
what i want to say.....we trancey's dont know more than anyone else. our music is not better, not more intelligent and in no way more worth than any else music...therefore i cannot really understand the fuss being made here....
what is psytrance? its electronic music where everything is possible and which got a typical style of melodies in it....try to explain it like this once and not like "its music too complicated for you to understand", show respect to what other people love, and i bet your friends will say "that sounds interesting, can u lend me some?".
