well

creating lead melodies.

this is one of the most tricky things in psy can i say.
everyone can make a melody. but it hasnt to be just a melody ya know. melody must be perfect!
every single note you take has to tell it pointless.

simple melodys often have a hook.

for example Younger brother psychic gibbon. the guitar is so beautyfull and timeless and soooooo easy to play....

night psy often works with halftone intervall like oldschool goa.

try take short melodys and loop them and then go and improve it. to learn melodies

16th notes to trigger your endorphins...

RYTHM: you need the rythm. also on a melody. try to creaty melodys while grooving with the sound.

a midi editor really can be a instrument after some years of playing it

cheers

here a scale "phrygian" to create psychedelic melodies.

trick for create a basic arpeggio in 16th
Random - -- -- - - - - notes around "E"
+Oct "E" - - -- - -- --
Root "E"- --- ---- -- --

This just means that you'll center around E instead of C. And the first scale step (E->F) is a semitone step.
A typical melody could e.g. just consist of a sequence of E-D-E-F-E repeated ad nauseum... You could get wacky and throw a G into the mix every now and then. With a slowly opening filter and some EG->filter/EG decay modulation

Slynth - Xsze has the right idea.

Melodies in static scales bore everyone to shit. And they sound like a 4yr old made them.

Creating interesting melodies implies counterpoint and harmony interaction in alternating stable-unstable dynamic patterns which to top it all off, are meant to show or represent some emotion.

So ... no easy way.

A good way to start though is to transcribe interesting melodies from songs you think are good examples of the kind of stuff you would like to do. Try work out why they work by reading up on harmony... when it doesn't make theoretical sense its probably because you don't know enough theory. Important concepts to master are intervals, consonance, dissonance, harmonic progression, resolution, bitonality and chromatic scales, modulation... when you understand how to use all these you will be able to construct an interesting engaging surprising melody.

Other important concepts are balance, symmetry, rhythmic decceleration/acceleration, frustration, anticipation, contrast, but are more to do with larger scale of composition and have to do with getting the melody to fit in with the larger picture. Chicken and egg.

Have fun although it can be a full time job.

if you don't play piano, try to improvise with a pad controller like ableton push or launchpad.
they are more flexible for those who are not trained for piano keys.
and they help getting more variation then just writing notes on the piano roll.

put your bass playing and kick. write some notes or chords on the piano roll and then harmonize.

A good tip when you are struggling with melody's is to decide a scale you will start from and use arps.
learn the keys in the scale and now you suddenly have alot of room for improvisation on that scale.
There is no easy way to write compelex melodies its something that comes with time.
But using scales definantly helps alot!           .

this worked for me...

learning one scale...and play with it notes, until i get into the point that they sounded better...

full on got many 'one' note melodies leads, with alot of filter envelope, cut off lfo, FM ...           https://soundcloud.com/ancientaliengoa

ableton push is great because it allows users to pick a scale.

but for the more simple controllers, users can map and customize their scales too.

^ you can use "Scale" from Midi Effects in Ableton and use it with any midi keyboard or even computer keyboard without horrible overpriced Push

yes. push is like a dedicated ableton controller. but it's possible to do with that any other controller too, with the ableton scale midi plugin.

just build a midi rack with all the scales. and map the chain slider to a macro.
map the base/key knob too (in every scale) to other macro. so it's possible to change from scale to scale and key easily. and on the fly.

not sure if there are any inbuilt equivalents in other daws. fl studio has a scale helper.
