Review:

POTS is Tohmas Wilhelmy and Achim Luthje from Germany. They started making music together in the late 90's, producing dark and trancy music with phat basslines. They have many releases on label's such as Flow, Spiral Trax, Iboga, Manta and Plastik Park. There first album "Scientific Darkness" was released on Sunset Records.. Now they are back with there second full lenght album on Tribal Vision with there new sound.

Crystal Cream starts off this album with a groovy bassline and funky sounds. Using a weak kick, we are honord to the first of many progressive delight's on this album. Not the most complex track on this album, but just perfect to get people's attention. Very loopy but yet still inteligent music. Be on the lookout if your a DJ mixing this track, the last minute is a beatless melody.

Hello Kitty is a little more upbeat and has more of a prog feel to it. Loopyer than ever, POTS offers a different kind of progressive track than "Crystal Cream".. Not the best track on this album, but the middle is very interesting.. its just a little too long if you ask me..

Trance Popper pops right into the action, starting off with a kick and some tribal percs.. i'd say this one is my favorite up to now. A blend of progressive and tribal house makes this a very interesting track. I love the new more housyer tracks, like such released on Avalanche Records.. This one would fit right into those compilations.

Bravo has a more tecky bassline probably caused by a delay effect. The sounds bring to mind the Desert, starlight and tree's.. you can feel a heavy "Nature" influence. This would be perfect at a HUGE outdoor festival as the sun rises to start a new day. Its even motivating at times when you sit a think about what you are listening to.

Botox party could have been one of the most interesting tracks on this album if the bassline would have started near the begining of the track.. It lacks a bit of something, and you can feel the bassline is missing durring most of this one. As this song starts, you feel as if this will be a real good follow-up track to "Trance Popper", but it just doesn't really kick enough.. i guess, as an intro this could be something special since the last two minutes make up for the lack of energy in the begining.

Groove Garden is the track that makes you say "here we go", as this album takes yet another small turn for the best. Seeing much more psychadelic influences than the previous tracks, Groove Garden deep and trancy.. Great to just lose yourself on the dancefloor.

Eifelgold is the fastest of all tracks on this release. Faster isn't always better, and in this case, i feel you loose a bit of the grooves in this one, although it is the most atmospheric of them all up to here, i find its just too fast (im feeling like a wussy ok?? hehehe) Still, this one offers a great progression and a much more DJ friendly track if you like spinning stuff like Freq, Sun Control Species etc...

Dandy Division is truly something speical.. You can really feel the bass here, as POTS takes a more minimal approche to darker psytrance. A very effective track.

To finish off this journey, Tussy De Luxe offers a another deep tune with heavy atmospheres towards a darker side of life, all without being twisted or aggressive.. this is a very soothing tune and can be best hear in the late mornings at a party.

All in all, POTS offers quiet a bit of variety in this release ranging from 128 - 140 BPMS, all still with there own unique POTS trademark. This is a must if you like psytrance that isn't full-on..

My Favs are 1, !3!, 4, 6, !8!, 9

Tribal Vision Records based in the Czech Republic continues their high productivity of releasing progressive trance. Here they are with the second album by Prisoners Of The Sun, also called POTS (Thomas Wilhelmy & Achim Lüthje). Their first album (Are You Scientific Enough?) was released on Sunset Recordings in 2001, which relesulted in a lot of gigs for this duo worldwide. Tribal Vision gives us a pretty cool cover art as usual, including all the information you need in a nice booklet.

Prisoners Of The Sun “Creating Social Success” Tribal Vision Records 2005 (TVRCD005)

1. Crystal Cream
2. Hello Kitty
3. Trance Popper
4. Bravo
5. Botox Party
6. Groove Garden
7. Eifelgold
8. Dandy Division
9. Tussy De Luxe

With this album we get smooth progressive vibes from beginning to end. We get a nice variation of bpm here, ranging from 128-140. Some of these tracks also come close to progressive house, so this should be an album that could fit well at a progressive house floor as well as a trippy trance floor. My favourite track here is track 5 (Botox Party), which is a quite housy track, but with a really trippy, interesting vibe. For sure a track I could play in the early evening at a party. Groovy drift, catchy sounds and a nice melody. Never too fluffy, and actually quite dark. Most of the tracks goes pretty minimal, but in a good way. Groovy beats and some crispy, echoing sounds. Some melodies are also put in here and there, but never falls over to the cheesy side.

The second album by Prisoners Of The Sun will for sure not dissappoint the progressive crowd out there. Here we get pretty good variation, and tracks that should fit the taste of a bigger audience than the usual trance heads. Most of the tracks builds up in a nice way, and we get some nice breaks in there too. So, if you are into progressive trance or house, check it out!

Artist: POTS (Prisoners Of The Sun)

Review:

After 3 progressive compilations and 1 part-album/part-remixes (Mellers "Rockable"), the hottest new label on the progressive scene, Czech Tribal Vision is ready with their 1st full length album (and their 5th release in just 1 year) - the 2nd album from POTS, perhaps better known to some as Prisoners Of The Sun.

POTS is a german duo which consists of Archim Lüthje (also a part of the duo Expect) and Thomas Wilhelmy - they have been releasing music for over half a decade, and was one of the major players in the minimal/progressive wave around the millennium, resulting in releases on almost all the key players on the progressive scene, labels like Iboga, Spiral Trax, ZMA, Plastik Park, Flow, Tatsu, Medium and the late Sunset Records, where they also released their debut album "Are You Scientific Enough?" back in 2001.

Apart from a few tracks on compilations here and there, not much has been heard from POTS in later years though - until now, where their new album "Creating Social Success" in on the street:

01. Crystal Cream [130 BPM]
"Crystal Cream" gets straight to the point, with a very simple, yet quite positive melody, at first reminding me of some early german progressive, but slowly evolving, getting deeper and warmer, and at the end it feels like getting embraced by a nice, warm blanket. Super sweet opener.

02. Hello Kitty [132 BPM]
The laidback "Hello Kitty" take the album in a groovier direction, and it's a wonderful progressive psytrance/progressive house crossover tune. Seriously funky but in a mellow, lazy way and constantly developing with lots of fine little twists and turns along the way. I'm not really into guitars in trance, but the guitars at the end here, are quite delicious, and are a nice touch to a very good tune.

03. Trance Popper [128 BPM]
"Trance Popper" is one of the more distinct tunes on the album: it has a very heavy tribal house-oriented groove, lazy but still phat as hell. A gloomy and somewhat strange humming melody enters in the break after 3½ minutes - it feels a bit awkward at first, but as soon as those delicious retro-house and trance pads enter, it's all good. Really great track.

04. Bravo [132 BPM]
Next up is the aptly named "Bravo", definitely the most melodic tune on the album, and by far one of my favourites. It has a very distinct wobbly groove with some energetic tribal percussion, and the melodies are simply beautiful on the verge on being epic - not in the increasingly popular cheesy "in-your-face" way, but more thoughtful and on the deep and subtle side. My favourite tune on the album, and the kind of tune that would fit perfectly into an early morning set at a small, intimate party. Bravo!

05. Botox Party [128 BPM]
"Botox Party" feels like the logical followup to "Trance Popper", so the morning hymn "Bravo" breaks the flow a little in my opinion. "Botox Party" isn't a bad tune though, groovy progressive psytrance/tribal house crossover with a slightly darkish atmosphere - fine night-tune for the clubs, but not among my favourites.

06. Groove Garden [134 BPM]
Tempo is raised with "Groove Garden", which despite the title, puts the house-influences in the background, and takes the album deeper into the progressive psytrance territory. A simple, naïve arpeggiator-melody grooves along totally unaffected while sweet, floating pads are in the background, with some marvellous reverbed tech'ish stabs flying back and forth. Marvelous tune.

07. Eifelgold [140 BPM]
Things get a lot faster with "Eifelgold", a tune with a very pre-2002 progressive sound, putting the groove aside and focusing more on a quite static, pumping minimal bassline. Some electric guitar samples seem to be the highlighted theme of the track, with some shallow pads in the background, providing a hint of light. Good, but never really shines as one of the better tunes here.

08. Dandy Division [138 BPM]
Although not as pumping and energetic as the previous track, "Dandy Division" almost maintain the relatively high tempo and somewhat oldschool-progressive sound. It's pleasant and dance-friendly morning progressive psytrance, but like the previous track I found it among the weaker tunes on the album - it simply doesn't impress as much as some of the slower tracks.

09. Tussy De Luxe [134 BPM]
Last but not least "Tussy De Luxe" ends the compilation in style. Definitely a wonderful, laidback morning tune with nice, soothing pads and sweet guitar-samples, resulting in a very appealing, mellow vibe. After the last two, somewhat disappointing tracks, this is the perfect come-down from a truly great album.

Bottom line:

A few months ago POTS where featured on Tribal Visions "Inner Circle" compilation with the track "Pole Position Club", and to be honest I found that track very disappointing. Based on that my expectations for "Creating Social Success" where pretty low, but luckily I must say that the album came through as a very positive surprise, with a very sophisticated mixture of morning and night-time progressive psytrance of both the past and present, progressive- and tech-house and slight elements of tribal as well.

I doubt it's capable of competing with some of the biggest progressive highlights of the year (Ticon, Antix and Jaïa) in dance floor "hit" potential though. Sure there are some fine dance floor tracks, and most progressive DJ's will probably buy this for their case, but generally I find it too laidback and doubt it's as easy-digestible as the average dancer is requesting. Don't let that fool you though: I love "Creating Social Success", and find the depth, subtleness and attention to detail a huge quality.

For home-listening, I find this is one of the best progressive albums in 2005, and I can only recommend it.

Favourites:

1, 2, 3, 4 (!!), 6 (!!), 9 (!!)

Verdict:

8,5/10

Thanks, and I hope you'll like it

So far I've heard quite mixed impressions from different people - some find it dull and unispiring, and others find it fresh and daring. You could try downloading the "Dandy Division" track for free at Tribal Visions website first (although I find it among the weakest tracks here).          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

yeah, i downloaded that and I didnt like it that much, thats why i was so undecided at first.

But, judging from your descriptions of the tracks that are below 135bpm I should really like it, thats right up my alley, little naive melodies, pads, cool grooves etc, fluffy always calls it "pussy prog.", not really dancefloor materiaL but good home listening. if it sucks Ill know where to ask my money back           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

Well fuck me if this isn't a corker. But then again, I'd expect nothing less after their stellar first effort. A great album which I'm listening to regulary even today. And now with the new one sitting in my player I can safely say that this one is up to par as well. Great stuff, the evolution of their work took a natural turn and the flow on the tracks is just amazing. Nothing sounds forced, it all just flows along great. Definately reccommended.           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment. As death extinguishes us, so we become it."
