I am all for the artists decision to put whatever he wants in his music, but I can't say that I like political songs. One of the previous posters mentioned how ineffective snippets from CNN would be in a psy track.
Musical politics may work at times in lyric-based music, but I think if the songs content has little or nothing to do with the point that the artist is trying to make (simply by naming his track after some fringe political idea) then it isn't really much of a message.
Sure, sample Dubya or Michael Moore or whoever and put it in a track and that's just fine if that's what you want to do, but don't expect the dancer to stop checking out the ass of the cute girl in front of him long enough to notice your earth shattering revelation. |

For myself, I prefer to get my politics in more rational ways than music. Although music can be an agent of political change (for example Woodie Guthrie or Martin Luther King, or slave songs, or civil rights songs) I dont really want to hear George Bush's voice at a trance party.
If someone has a message that they want to share and music is how they want to share it, then thats OK, but they are more likely to get me to listen to their opions by making a rational argument.
I go to trance parties to have my brain dazzled with sound and light, and sometimes to have discussions about serious topics like politics with my friends there. However I just dont really want it in the music, except in the most abstract ways.
The kinds of "message" samples that I like are ones that reference something in science or history, or samples of literature that I can find by searching the text of the sample in Google and rationally educate myself about it.
Also a few well chosen words of wisdom can be nice (ie spacetribes track with the Dali Lamas lessons for life or this etnoscope track that I cant remember excatly).
Anyway artists should make what they want/feel they must, regardless of whether I or anyone else likes it or not. If I dont like it I dont have to listen.

if the music became too political and the scene keeps growing at its present rate, eventually it will have an effect on society.....thats when its make or break.....will the governments clamp down on us as they did the hippies, or will we be left alone to spread messages of peace and unity along with psychedelic punting... |

Yeah it will have the effect of society getting tired of all those dirty hippies. We ain't gonna change the world by dancing, trance dancing won't put food in the stomachs of the hungry, feed the sick, cure HIV, or overthrow corrupt governments.
It is possible that the social networks formed in the trance scene could be used to get people together and make a positive difference.
But we are kidding ourselves if we think the revolution is gonna happen on the trance floor... only the revolution in our minds will happen there!!

Yup, politics with trance is unnecessary imo. You only have to open a newspaper- in order to get some.. I totally agree with Psycosmo words.

That's only half of what politics is - the half that comes from those trying to mould public opinion and distract us with lots of lovely wars and meaningless elections. The real politics is what you and I and everyone else chooses to do with our lives, and the manner in which we do it - and we can only ever choose from the alternatives we're aware of. Sounds to me like you're happy with the way the world is, which I for one am certainly not.
But whatever. Thanks and have a nice day.

My beliefs on politics are that they are the science (or decided rules rather) on which the human race interacts with itself and the rest of the universe. I hear a lot of references to these acts in lots of trance. I don't think "ooh... that's political" I just hear it.. maybe think a little.
I wouldn't promote or speak against this being done as I have 100% respect for artistic freedom, but I'm very bored of hearing the word LSD slowed down and sped up over and over again |
