a crowd that is not tryin to chill is easy to please..its like to play when nobody expects anything from a dj like skills etc..they are not even akin to listening to sumthin in particular..nobody cares..egoes have left..
and i plaY my most special set carefully arranged to deliver the unexpected punch..show them the stars ..those beautiful toddlers will go wherever knowin not what sonic web they are a part of !!
I am the darkness that is the light and the stillness that is the dancing :) |

I have rarely had the opportunity to enjoy decent chill out sets.
To be honest I don't know enough about the DJ craft to comment on what constitutes a "good mix" rather than a "bad mix." However, coming from a relative newbie, the sets I have enjoyed the most were the ones with the most complete, rounded 'flow' or 'ambience'. By that I mean the DJ or artists has chosen tracks that take you on a journey, starting in one place and naturally moving through a series of complemetary tracks until you end up somewhere else. Obviously it's great if you get to hear your favourites in there but I think it's more important to complete the journey.
I have no idea if that makes any sense to anyone else but me.... |

I love dark and some kind of "scary" tunes played @ the chill. But in those days, you often get some kind of "easy listening" noises, which are as psychedelic as a dentist-visit...
I think, there should be alway 2 Chill Areas, one 4 talking, where tunes with danceable are played, and one to fly on the wings of sound (less rhythm, more ambience, please!)
  Don't Panic!? |

Anyone with any kind of sense of rythem can Dj 4/4 psy trance it's a no brainer. To beat match chill out is a totally different matter. I will beat match a couple of tracks , then go to a different place, because chilled tracks have different atmospheres you need it to move it would be boring if you kept the same tempo like a dancefloor set.......Chill Dj's just have to ebb & flow. |

I do beatmach when I feel like...sometimes I just mix the atmospheres, I'm very very personal with my taste...so the people who book me know what to expect from me.
I prefer to play at night with some envolving, music, heavy atmospheres...deeply, pushing basslines.
It needs to sound the way I want....I need to get envolved with what I'm doing, everybody must realise..."justin's in da house".
I do work with the BPM as well...it's about common sense.
I remember people playing in chill-outs in a festival in Brasil...a Thievery corporation track, then a reggae song, then deep dive corp, then Abakus, everything with the worst mixes I've ever heard...and 30 beats of difference between each track, horrible.
That's because of the idea of "It's a chill-out...you have no limits"...rubbish, it's very hard to be a good chill-out DJ, a proper one.
And no...I don't like random tune players with no idea whatsoever about what it needs to be done.
And no...I don't like the typical "chill-DJ" playing a twisted track, then an L.S.D track, then an Interchill one...i dig so much to create my sets...you have no idea.
Because when you get the right atmosphere...it's impossible for the crowd to don't get into it, and then you're in control of that atmosphere and it's a responsability...it's up to the person behind the decks...your choice:Random tune player or proper DJ...I would say...let the professionals do their job.
PS I just found some other interesting thread related to this one.

I would think you have to be. It's like writing music is it not? If you 'feel' for the work yourself, then something of that will touch the crowd.

I have danced more day sets than night but I don't think I could choose which one I prefer. But there is a magic to the dark I think, especially with good lighting and strange sounds coming at you...!

This is exactly what I meant earlier when I spoke of the whole - the journey. In my dance meditation group we work with music set to what we call a 'wave' - where you start in one place and gradually, naturally move from one track to another in terms of BPM, atmosphere, style...I think that is soooooo important. There is nothing worse than finding yourself the middle of a good dance, finding your rhythm, and then having to completely change direction with the start of a new track. It has to move gently and take you somewhere naturally.

This is so true. I love it when I just can't help myself, and have no choice but to dance.
Wow! More serious posting by JC! A dark horse indeed.
Peace X |

Hm............
I didnt like to hear your experience ´´in Brazil....``
It could have been anywhere else...
You could have said that you went to a festival in AFRICA, and that happened... OR you could just say you went to a festival, no matter where it was...
because it gives the IDEA that everyone in Brazil is like that... you know?
In Brazil, like everywhere else, we have people ranging from ´´best dj`` to ``non-dj``, which by the way I consider my own case...
I know that there is one dj who considers himself a dj, the best one, because he lives out of it, out of the chill out tracks he plays I donw know where out in the world and in the festivals and all... But he´s got no ´CHILL OUT` spirit WHATSOEVER...
I also know a person who calls himself a dj, that has a ok taste over the songs but takes up the fact of playing in a party to get the free entrance and the parking-inside-the-party-ticked, and does not bother to SHOW UP at the chillout area... so the line up is a big mess and to be ´´solved`` by the ones who are there.
There´s all kind of people everywhere in the world, with musical taste ranging from excellent to none, and with dj ´´skills`` or not....that you mention, is not something exclusive OF Brazil...
My case: I am NOT a dj, I think I have had the opportunities to be there, playing nice songs, making a nice atmosphere at the place... - which varies too... If Im playing in a festival, is one kind of set. If Im playing in a bar at the beach in bahia, is another kind of set... And this ´´flexibility`` is what I think I am known for, at least for the people that I play, like this bar owner once told me I was the only one to understand that THERE was a bar at the beach where nice cool people hanging out, it was NOT a trance festival NOR a night club... as other ppl who call themselves DJJJJJJJJJJSSSSSSS, do not get the point.
perception - see where you are, doing what, with whom...
adapt - fit in there... if youre ´´hired´´ to play at the lounge of a graduation private party, to open the party, do not make it a so psychedelic set man... hahah...
creativity - since we have almost all kinds of music to play, be nice, create a good enviroment...
skills - know at least how to switch tracks... how to listen in the headphones and all that...
everyone is a natural dj... you have your preferences, your personal taste...
showing it to other people and having a good time listening to what you like a lot with friends, in a party, at the beach or wherever.... is very.. very pleasent!
