'Perfect DJ Set' Concept of voyage through sound?

YOUR the storyteller & if you cant figure then let someone else tell the tales

Know your music, understand your audience, brush up your mixing skills & let the journey begin!!

if i deejayed, i'd start with Son Kite - Colours. and i'd end it with some old mindbending goa, playing everything i like in between.

I remember the first time I was going to play in front of people, I asked the mailing list I was on (604) the same question. what track to start and end with.
I got some answers, sure, but what I ended up choosing to play was from my own feeling.

Inspire yourself. Find tracks that you love and want to share.

Whatever anyone tells you here, take it as suggestions, but most of all listen to music then go and listen to more, and when the time comes, the voice inside will tell you what to play.

most "delicate" tracks are those, "in between", fading up or fading down..

I like to open a mix with nice building tracks, not too powerful first. (This is pure psychedelic (dark) mixing Im talking about) Something that grabs people by the brainstem, makes them think, wow what's he gonna play next?

Usually I happen upon a track like this just listening to cds at work. I usually make a mental note about that track, and think about how I could continue in that vein.

As for Progressive, I like to start with a bit of a chill or downtempo track. Then a nice funky-intro'd track, something like Ticon or Freq, something like that.           .

well i cant say iv ever played to a crowd, but when im messing around at home i normally try to pack a thumper for the 1st track, sort of grab listeners by the cahones and keep 'em there. hehe. and as for the end, well im kind of in 2 minds about how to go about it. depends on the kind of set your going for really, like if ur playing a twilight set you could try ending on a hard note, or you could end with a chill track or a more mellow melodic one. hope that helps.

i had a question to ask regarding how djs construct their sets bpm wise - like do some djs work at a constant bpm, or try increasing it carefully, or just go all ballz out jumping from bpm to bpm? i normally try to keep the bpm increasing and then in the end i might drop down to a chill track or a slower 'breather' sort of track. im sure everyone has their own way to go about things so was just curious to see what other djs do.

I'm very particular about the BPM, ideally I like to start low around 138 and build it up to max 146! But there have been times at a party where I felt the crowd was already warmed up by the previous act, so I started with 145 groovy bass line but nothing too hardcore! Just really depends on the vibe & what you feel would sound right!!

Choosing the intro of my set is usually the most challenging part for me.. as for the finishing, I have a signature tune 146 BPM that I conclude with           "If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace"

In regards to bpms, I like to vary it throughout, no jumps up or down, unless it seems to work that way... But sometimes I like to have it consistent throughout.

Its a matter of preference, if you change the bpm slowly its not easy to tell you even changed it. That, IMO, is more important than anything.

Ive always thought, that the sign of a really good dj is that you can't tell they're mixing, no obvious effects, bumps in bpm, just like its all part of the song. IMO the dj just adds their own 2 cents to tracks. Thats how I do it at least. Its all about the music after all, not how cool or good you are.

The bottom line IMO is subtlety.           .

Back to the Topic........

Stroying telling is like Smooth Voice leading.
Tension and Release.... Building and realeasing and holding back and giving it to them ..

But after some Very deep Teasing .A little bit of Realeasing and then some more teasing and Then a Big Slpash of Soninc Orgasmic Psychedellic Beats ........But it all has to trasform and trancende the dancers in to going where you are leading them .Playing for them what they want and what the moment wants ....Not Playing music for your self Don't FOrget and go off on SOme head trip. Release your self to Flow and Intuition and COnnect with the Dancfloor, play what it wants ,IF you know your music and are not just funbleing thru youur cd's or records because you haven't really DOne your home work like a good little boy or girl.... USE THE FORCE LUKE,, And Study your tracks, now where you are going when you are mixing ...

All Beat macthed into one smooth flow of musik that will make you stand back look at each other in the morning and say WOW how the F&*K Did I get Here ???

Any Questions?

TimBaBwae, you said it in ways I only tried to!

My best times on dancefloors have always been when I realize that Ive been on the floor for hours and hours, but it felt like minutes!

But of course, there are other ways of mixing.

Basically, learn to match beats, then learn where and when to bring tracks in, then play around, play around some more, and a little mroe, keep trying new things, no matter how wacky they sound. Record often, listen and hear what you do and don't like, record more, play more, experiment more...

Eventually you'll find something that really works for you, a technique or something you like, etc...

Basically everything I learned about mixing psytrance I learned from blindly diving in and doing it!

(Basic points for beginners: 1 bpm change on a cdj is approximately, not always, most of the time, 0.7%.
So to change 143 to 146, you pitch up 2.1%. You'll get it soon enough!

Psytrance patterns commonly repeat every 32 beats, and sometimes you can hear little 4, 8, or 16 beat breaks in between. Also, often at the end of a pattern, there is a stop in the bass, or a little kick change-up, or something. Listen enough, you'll see what I mean. So count your 32 then bring the next tune in!

Try not to have the same band on the EQ going in 2 tracks at once. If bringing a track in, and the bass is full volume, the 2 basses will do this really awful sounding distortion thing, especially on a system. Too much in the same frequency range will do that. Once again, play around, listen, you'll hear what I mean.

If you can do these 3 things then you've got the basic techniques down. The rest is personal preference and playing around! )

{oh, and Protoculture SUCKED at Symbiosis.... HAHA, J/K, I had a great time during his set! }

does anyone else think that good DJ-set is matter of the venue , crowd , time , and place ???

i meen , i wouldnt play the same in 19:00 as first set like 02:00 set , or 07:00 set , and wouldnt play exacly the same indoor and outdoor.

good dj-set make the peaple dance , great set will make em remember it.
