I posted this link already in the "MP3 OR NOT" topic, but I guess it's just more visible here...

Anyway read this article and tell me what you think. What, in your opinion, will happen now? What will change? Perhaps nothing....

not at all...

napster was closed, then audio gallaxy was also closed, and the more they fight it the worst it get for their side.

they can actually end p2p networks but what them, how long will it take to get other ways of exchaging music games moveis etc in the internet. maybe they would also have to close bit torrents!! but that will make no difference at all. new kinds of p2p programs will appear, slightly different that can contour the legislation, like it happens for example in holland where "lights" drugs are legal and where other kinds of synthtic drugs are not legal but you can find them in stores. they last for 6 months or something the time things go to court, and then they just slightly change the formula, and put it back in the market for another 6 months. i remmember this happened for example with 2CB.so this means they can struggle but they won´t get anywhere.

just my opinnion

Nothing will happen.
Napster, audio galaxy, grockster and kazaa was all products from business entities.
DC++ and bittorrent is opensource and is not distributed by companies and exist in many flavors and to stop them is a lot more complicated than suing a company into bankrupcy.

And windows has messenger and ftp built in, so if they manage to stop all other filesharing software it's just to boot up XP and keep sharing.

I doubt they manage to make sure that M$ takes away those functions and ensure there is no old copies of windows around.
If that happens one can always use gigamail or yousendit or trade CD and DVD by snailmail.
If they manage to get rid of CD and DVD there is always possibility to have LAN meetings.

The only way to stop sharing is to totally ban computers, cassette tapes, DAT, minidisc, VCRs...etc etc           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

i must say you have hit the nail on its head. there is no possible way to stop sharing in the immediate future.           ~what lies before us and what lies beyond us is tiny as compared to what lies within us~

As long as there are people with devices that can store music and a way of connecting them together, there will always be people swapping music. No amount of legal action or moral preaching will ever change that - and while debates like this make good reading - they really are pretty pointless.           Am i the only one who believes in solipsism?

P2P is the future of the internet.

German, and i think also elsewhere, universities are developing new decentral networks, p2p networks. This is the way internet started before it became what it is now, big servers saving and giving information. Filesharing is only one, smart part of the possibilities of a decentralised network.

Dear EYB, sorry if I have to correct you, but P2P is not the future of the internet, but the existing reality.....

Dear EYB,
perhaps you have misunderstood my previous post....
My point is that P2P is not the futurre because such softwares you can ALREADY find them in every single home based network! Of course in the future we will see several kind of evolutions regarding those S-wares.

You can not say that something is the Future of the I'net if it is already a common reality....

I hope now, I gave you to understand in a better way my point of the previous post.....

best regards

U r talking about filesharing, what is only a small part of p2p.

Sure there are already some p2p aplications, but in future the MAIN PART of the internet will use a p2p system. So all computers will act as server and as client the same way, a big network. Now there are big servers that send the data to the user.

For example one new advantage will be that unused resources of my computer for example can be used for calculations for someone else who needs some more resources for something.
This way scientific calculations like the dna decoding can be done.

I can't explain all this stuff very well in english, yet, coz i am still learning, sorry. But i hope u get what i mean.

The new Nokia n91 (coming soon to a retailer near you) is taking this to a whole new level. The phone has a 4gb hdd and the beautiful (or not, depends how you think of it) part is that you can swap tunes (mp3s/wav/whatever..) between anyone with the same phone thru air..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

P2P networks - beginning of the end

this "beginning of the end" lasts for 10 years now.
have you already come closer to the end where you can see no light?
the music industry continues living its way, ease it up.
i mean, what you could be afraid of like 8-10 years ago when this mp3-spreading arose? a common discussed scheme: "the rights of the owners (labels) are violated, because they get less money from sales because more listeners prefer downloading the music via the internet. hencefore they won't be able to produce further releases."
do you have less or worse music at the parties now?           last.fm/user/jyxx/

what i want to say is that i'm not for mp3-spreading, i just don't see this "beginning of the end" which you're talking about.           last.fm/user/jyxx/
