OVERLAP - 6th Sense [Z.M.A.]
1. 6th Sense
2. No Way Out
3. Deep Diving
4. Ghost Story
5. Bump In The Night
6. Naked People
7. Children Of The Universe
8. Transformation
9. Doors
10. Deja Vu

Aight... well, I don't usually review CDs, but this one is such a blast that I thought I might say a word or two since I couldn't find anything in this forum about it... Overlap is a project of Neoris (Vyachaslav Bogachev) and Neogen (Misha Puchkov) from Russia and on their debut album they show an incredible depth of talent and insight into what makes music GOOD that it gives me renewed faith in this genre which has suffered so much at the hands of stylistic homogenization... so, the review: this album builds from deep and dirty to full-on and melodic without losing a distinct sense of cohesion at any point. Multiple moods are explored, each track is its own little masterpiece (with the gems sure to rise out of the soup as time passes and the listener becomes more aware), and the whole album has a beatiful FLOW... how'd you do it guys??

A comment on the full-on tracks found here... they are constructed very similarly to the proggy tracks found on this CD in that they usually don't have blaring distinct melodies - instead, we return to the old Goan concept of LAYERS (learn how to use them people!) to bring a fullness and richness to the sound. So what you have are full-on tracks that are very upbeat and full of action without being mindless or corny or obnoxious. About the 'progressive' tunes here... they never really strike minimal territory - the richness of sound in the production gives even the sparse tunes a feeling of completeness that makes them very listenable. This is not sanitized music - it is delicately hand-crafted and polished. The beats through-out the album are very sly and futuristic, very fitting to my taste in percussion. What can I say? I love this album so far...

I can't pick out favourites as of right now, but I did play track 6 at my latest gig and it tore the roof off that suckah... I know I'm going to enjoy getting to know this album a lot more in the coming year - what a wicked start to 2004.

Ultimate kudos to the Overlap crew and to ZMA for blazing a wicked new path through all the redundant releases... if you're tired of top-40 and are into the whole concept of buying albums that work at home AND on the dancefloor then I highly recommend this one... and for the love of g-d, don't lump this in with the other "neo full-on" stuff its better than that.

Basilisk! I fully agree with what you said - I only heard 2,5 min samples at saikosounds, but Overlap definitely kicks ass. It is the first release in a long time that sounded different than anything else (well, for example Orion and Mumbo Jumbo did sound different too ). Their sound is something between progressive / tech-trance and full-on, but takes only the best elements of them. This stuff _is_ melodic, but there are no melodies. This music is minimal, but there is a lotof sound layers... I don't know how to express myself?!

And Basilisk! The way you write reviews makes me realize how much I miss your detailed and in-depth reviews at psynews.org It was you who convinced me to buy some of the CDs in my collection, and I'll definitely buy this one at the first occasion too...

What an album from Overlap!!! I have been keeping eye on Overlap since their music was on Monarchie3/ZMA, and compilation from Horns And Hoofs Entertainment. And this release blow my expectation away!!!! This release is insane!!! I know it's beginning of 2004 but I would say its going to be my favorite album of this year. I would describe the music angrier or darker varsion of Hux Flux/Division by zero. As basilisk mentioned, overlap's outstanding point is using layers to have the music spacy depth. Also, sound movements is very hypnotic, complicated and demented but at the same time, easy to feel in it and dramatic. Each stage of development comes with more sounds layer and energy. Very complicated programming!!! This guys are truely wizards!!!
I understand what antic feels. I feel its progressive/ minimal but it comes with more layers of sounds and psychdelicness. I think you'll be shocked when you get into details of their sound.
All the trax are amezing but you'll see what I'm trying to say here on track 4.

Tell me what you listen, and I'll tell you what you are.

Debut album release for ZMA Records for the year 2004 and what an album indeed.

The Overlap guys have done a splendid job here in their debut personal album and they introduce us to a high quality production that worths checking out for sure.

6th Sense is a very mature album and i have to admit that i was very surprised from the Russian duet,no cheesy melodies,no typical israeli baselines that everyone uses in our days and no fast ideas, just serious tracks and techniques that will make you dance for sure.

All ten tracks are very well produced and have an amazing flow plus they cover all of your music needs from full on to even more proggy tunes.

My favorite tunes are Deep Dive,Children Of The Universe,Transformation (best tune in my opinion and most danceable one) and Deja Vu (amazing atmosphere in this one).

I liked all the tracks in this cd more or less, except Doors maybe.

A great release by a rising star act from Russia, this is a must have album if you got bored of the typical full on music released in our days. The mastering is for once again superb by the way.

Keep up the amazing work Misha and Vechaslav

Overall Rate 7.5/10           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

Well.
We closely listened to this album and came to a conclusion that it is good hi-tek production.
But no more.
The creative part of the Overelap yet so is not interesting. Names of compositions and the shells(atmospheres) of tracks do not coincide.
It is a lot of delay forms which grease the general background and MAIN sound-picture mosaic.
Sometimes sounds like as Astral Projection old '97 album (for example Deep Dive track) and of course too agressively-progressive!
Programming is not complicated but stylish.
Engineering is SO GOOD! I think one of the best in
Moscow (for psy-tech style of course!).
What at us is in a result?
One more Overlap's full on commercial product:
Out of depth of ocean into the air of high motion...
Very good!

7/10 (for clear sounds)

Klaxer my friend (i will send you my games list soon by the way LOL) i aggree with many of your points here except one though,i dont think that Overlap are just another full on commercial product, the guys music is a little bit more underground and its not the usual full on style that so many labels release in our days.

But thats just me after all.

Speak to you soon mate.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!

F*****G AMAZING!!!!

Sorry to put this in such blunt words, but that was precisely the feeling I was getting when hearing this album for the first time. I'm more of a progressive guy , although I like some (not all) fast and full-on stuff. But this cd, well.. it just took me over the top BRAVO

Mike i said "Overlap's full on"?
Yes.
THIS IS FULL ON. For me. For D.Roeth. Because this is COMMERCIAL PERSPECTIVE PROGRESSIVE fullon.
Not fast. Not slow.
Just one more Neolap:
Obstinacy and feeling of the tech-rhythm.

Think clearly.

Very good album. Wouldn't have thought it was their debut album, they have good sounds!

Indeed they use many progressive elements. It's totally progressive music at the beginning and moving to full on.
They don't sound like over agitated kids, who are in a hurry to release their first album. You can hear they have put much time and effort into producing this album.
The album is more morning orientated, but you still got the mysterious and chasing vibes.

Way to go guys. Good to see you're not making the usual Russian trance music.           Majority is never right!
