you are a lucky! start minimal. you can always push up but you can hardly push down. what about a classic: martian - ?? (fuck what was the trackname, no matter he just had one track released on spiritzone?)

not important. make the decision on the party! dont use any prepared set-trackscollections/whatever. if you cant ffel the vibe and make a intuitive decision you should let someone else on the decks. hard words, but a dj is not a juke-box.

The Martian (½ of danish beat bizarre) track was used to open the Voov Experience 1999 main floor and was then released on "The Opening EP". As far as I know it was only released on this 1 track EP / 12", so could be hard to find.

In regards to using a prepared set, I think you have to realize that even if you dont prepare a set with a tracklist, you will always have done some sort of preparation.
In itself, just listening to music, building up a database inside your head is preparation.
So, not preparing a set, well - Thats just stupid Then you would be playing music you dont know etc.

I think we both know what you are talking about is a fixed tracklist. Why is that a problem for you ?
I always use a tracklist, over which I can improvise if I want to. (Unless I dont have time, then I just pick the tracks while Im there, no problem).

I have had my personality analyzed, and been told I have intuitive senses to the extreme (more than most women, and far more than the typical male).

When I plan a set, I rely 100% on my intuition, its a matter of feeling my way through it. I have a clear idea of where I want to go, but also where I can go. When planning the set, I can simulate a party in my mind and visualize it clearly.
This is hard to describe, if you cant do it - but, it works, and it works very well. How can I know what music to play? Well I use my intuition, because thats what intuition does, it lets you deal with what you dont know.

This does not mean Im locked into a certain flow or tracklist, I can always choose to change the set on the fly, if I feel that works better. I did so for many years, untill I found a more effective method...

But you see, intuition is all about dealing with whats not nescessarily in the here and now, what you dont know, but what you can instictively feel.

Here is 2 definitions, taken from Wikipedia.org

"Intuition (gut feeling) - a spontaneous impulse to take an immediate, unplanned action, which in retrospect, proves to be the most beneficial action to take in order to positively influence an unknown future event or situation."

Which is of course matched up against this one.

"Intuition (knowledge) - understanding without apparent effort, quick and ready insight seemingly independent of previous experiences or empirical knowledge."

So - Yes - You can prepare a set beforehand using your intuition - since intuition is a guiding thing for you when you work, and it relates to future events (so does preparation). If you are a DJ with amazing intuition, that is doable, but they are 2 sides of the same coin. Intuition is important when you prepare, since it will guide you through it.

If you close your mind, to one side of your intuition, you will just be imposing a definition upon yourself as a DJ, which will be hampering your performance.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator rates your personality on a scale with Sensing in one end, and Intuition on the other.

"Sensing and Intuition are the perceiving functions. They indicate how a person prefers to receive data. These are the nonrational functions, as a person does not necessarily have control over receiving data, but only how to process it once they have it. Sensing prefers to receive data primarily from the five senses, and intuition prefers to receive data from the subconscious, or seeing relationships via insights."

I prefer to receive my data from my subconscious and dealing with the relations there is between music & listener + other trance related phenomena through my own insight. I dont need people to react for me to understand, I just need myself to feel the music.

Therefore, I dont think anyone should impose a working method on any DJ in regards to whether to prepare, or not to prepare a set. Whatever works works, and thats what matters.

Saying that preparation doesnt work with intuition is just plain wrong. It probably does not work for some djs, but for others it does.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator will even go so far as to put "Sensing" and "Intuition" on 2 ends of the same scale... Sensing meaning that you rely on your senses, the here and now, the tangible evidence (like whether people react good to the music, like whether they like what you do etc)... While intuition is something rooted far deeper in the persons/djs mind - Which does not nescessarily need to see, hear and watch anything - It just knows !

Minds do not think alike. I seek for answers inside myself, I take radical action and rely almost solely on my own intuition and knowledge to do so, taking MINIMAL influences from the here and now and MAXIMAL influences from the future as predicted through my intuition & its knowlege. If you try to read the future, you will be able to achieve a maximum degree of adaptability also.

Preparation is a method to ensure the most efficient use of the tools and energies at hand. Tools and energies (gear & audience), which you already know before you go to the party, by using your intuition.

Noone stops you from changing the plan... Keeping an open mind, being willing to change if demanded is important. After all, you might get moved to a different timeslot, what your intuition was acting on might change before or even during the dj set. Keeping an open mind more or less dictates, that you do not shut out the option of choosing the tracks on the fly, so if you are truely an open minded DJ, it will not at all be a problem if you have to deviate from the plan...

One does not exclude the other, but perfection includes them both.

Plz don´t think : "Hey, you´re the Dj, you have to find your own opening trax !!!!".
I´m just tryin to expand my horizon in the term of "opening ceremonys" (I´ve never played one before..)

But really, why dont you just listen to 100-300 Cds and note the tracks you like + the ones with the best intro + track structure ? That way, its YOU who did the work, and your taste in music that matters / gets expressed

I searched some of my own sets and also pr0fanes for starting tracks and came up with these.

Progressive/Deep
Vibrasphere - Bitter Deep - Stargate
Son Kite - Other Side - Digital Structures
Blue Planet Corporation - Entropie - Flying Rhino Records
Robert Elster - Random Reset Machine - Nervine Records
John Con Vs Nikola Gala - Swing 2 Harmony(Matthew Dekay Mix) - DK Records

Full On/Dark
Terminator - True Love - Deja Vu Records
Mr Peculiar - Emerging Light - Timekode Studios

Hope theres something to your liking.
