Actually, my point does not concern hearing loss as much as the Psychosomatic effects of "loud noise." I talked to an audiology student friend of mine, and he commented that while loud concerts are dangerous and pose a threat to your ear (most notable your eardrum if your a performer), the risk is not much more of a car horn or a police siren (but at a much frequent higher of incidence at a show, obviously). There is often a neurologically/psychological component of the tinnitus one experiences post show. I personally felt this when I first began going to shows but once I got used to the sound and the environment as a whole, I rarely have residual ear impairments the next day.

Yes, if your going to more than 30 shows a year or a DJ/staff member, then earplugs are definitely a good idea. I just don't want people new to the scene reading this thread and immediately buying some cheapo earplugs. Some organizers put in a lot of effort in creating good sound and cheap earplugs basically ruin everything we try to do. If hearing loss is a serious concern for you or you are a plain hypochondriac, I suggest buying a very nice pair a custom earplugs.

@Mica - you're a moron. Do you enjoy the feeling of damaging your ears and being able to hear less and less as the years go on? Do you think that is in some way beneficial? If wearing earplugs is pussy, then I am a giant gaping vagina - but as the years go on I'll still be able to hear all the goodness and you'll be missing out.

@ Zak - A pair of good earplugs is $10. TEN. Everyone who goes to psy shows can afford that, and they don't ruin the sound - in fact they make it better because you will be able to hear more of the spectrum for longer in your life. If ANYONE, new or not reads this thread and buys earplugs that is a GOOD thing - I cannot believe anyone in this day and age is advocating against earplugs.

If you got to *ONE* show a year of considerable volume, you should wear earplugs. Loud music for hours and hours WILL damage your ears.

Hypochondriacs, DJs, average listeners, newbies, pros - everyone.should.wear.earplugs
- and frankly anyone who says differently doesn't know what they're talking about.           If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I'd be happy to accept the title of meanie if I could convince one person to take this seriously who didn't before.

I went to parties for years and every time afterwards I would have massive ear strain...its so stupid and I kick myself for doing it when I could have just spent $10 and saved myself a lot of pain.

Jokes and sarcasm everywhere? Lol, sorry if I didn't get the amazingly brilliant "joke" of 'earplugs is for pussys'

It may be kind of harsh, but anymore I take someone's opinion on music and whatnot less seriously when I find out they don't wear earplugs to shows. ears noizes depends on how you enjoy your parties.

position yourself in a spot that is comfortable to your ears and you shouldn't get the ringing sound the next day. if you like to go speakerdiving...well, good luck.           the sky was pink

Hi, I usually wear earplugs and I thought the New Years Eve Psybotik afterparty was a hair loud. Especially compared to Sync's Tetraspace, which was in the exact same venue and had dreamy sound. Definitely at Psybotik the earplugs served. For all that, my ears rang a bit after the party.

I've been immersed in the scene since 1995 and, I'll be honest, I'm concerned about my hearing. Couldn't the people in charge turn it down a bit? I've often noticed the presence of several large speakers - would places look into more and smaller speakers, might that work?? Besides, turning it down a tad would lead to fewer noise complaints.

Can we have more outdoor festivals this summer? - I will help organize, I have a blacklight and I can move things around. peace & love, Moonclear

as a follow-up to my previous post, the last two parties i've gone too I took earplugs and am SOLD.
these ones are like having a soft fluffy cloud sit in my ear effortlessly: http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/mack%27s-ear-seals-dual-purpose-earplugs/ID=prod1707479-product

I am ashamed at myself for not having started with the earplugs earlier. never again will I go without, not just for protection, but quality of sound. I personally think it sounds better and agree with Moonclear that the sound is just way too loud in most of these places.

My girlfriend decided to join me with the earplugs for the past two parties as well and is just as strong of a convert as me.

I kinda want to stock up on a bunch of these and sell them at cost to everyone I can at psy parties.           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

Outdoor gatherings give you the option to adjust the sound. Not loud enough? Move up closer. Too loud? Drift back until you have the spot. It's nice not having the walls bouncing the sound back. In the outdoors the music flows pass you and into you differently then indoors, though I've heard many good sounds indoors.

I hadn't thought of spending more on earplugs. It hadn't occured to me that there was such a thing. Thank you for the tip and I'll check into it. The ones I've worn on occasion muddle the sound. I think it is something to have in your pocket, some music sounds louder, or maybe they do turn it up! I have a pair of HEAROS, but they're for swimming though I bought them for going to indoor gatherings. And I've stuffed paper or cheap ones in my ears when for some reason it sounds too loud, or that it is hurting my ears. I sometimes wonder how much our minds make sound feel good even if the volume of different things is the same. Is it possible that sounds we like do less damage and those we dislike are quicker to hurt? That sound preposterous, but sometimes our minds and brains work in these kinds of ways. Maybe related in some way to placebo effect?

My problem with earplugs is that they pack my earwax in and then the ringing really gets going when I leave. Does the ringing have anything to do with hearing loss, or are the interconnected by being caused by loud noise, but not necessarily having one means having the other? It takes a long time for the ringing to go away, and I have to not be exposed to loud noises. So far my hearing is good, but I think the next time I have it tested I'll try the sound booth and keep the numbers to compare to older tests when I was younger.           - - -
