Title: "Breaking through"
Genre: Psychedelic downtempo
Runtime: ~74 minutes
Equipment used: 2x Numark axis2 cd-players + Behringer DX626 mixer.

This time I present a mix meant for the early summer mornings, and the title of the set pretty much covers what the thing is all about. I've tried to express the feeling of early morning, when the sun is taking over, and the colder night is literally blown away by warm and soothing sun beams.

This of course calls for comforting and uplifting melodies, but I've tried to balance out the set with deep and melancolic moods as well, so we won't end up with 74 minutes of dolphins and seagulls singing ;-)

I suggest playing it just around the transition from dark to brighter horizon, when the sun is just about becoming visible. Well, enjoy the ride, and the forthcoming summer!

Comments will be much appreciated.

Friendly thoughts,

Jesper.

P.S.: For practical reasons this mix is made to fit a CD, so this time the length is not my usually (and prefered) 1½-2 hours.

Stunning set. Great trackselection, exceptional flow and outstanding atmosphere - Jespar is undoubtedly one of the best downbeat DJ's I've heard, and this is another highly recommended download.          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

I did not like it so much, because of the transistions, which are not so good in my opinion. Energy falls down too much at some points, coz of some too extreme outro/intro mixes ... that`s how I feel it ...
nice Music ... but the not so good transistions destroy the flow at some points ...

I appreciate your feedback, thanks a lot.

@Gunter:
Thank's for your critique.

Maybe you can be a little more specific about where in the set the mixing doesn't work for you? I'd be glad to know, because it can be hard for me to observe, when I've been listening and playing around with the same tracks for a longer period of time.

Personally I've noticed the transition between the "Symetric Lifes" and "Neurotransmitter" track, and I realise that this isn't working as good as I thought initially when mixing it. Besides this I don't really notice any "heavy" transitions.

But, in my next set I will be paying even closer attention to this aspect of the mixing, cause I really want the trackselection to shine at it's best.

Friendly thoughts,

Jesper.

Could you supply a cue sheet please ?

Nice tracklisting, but i also dislike the organisation, energy moves in and out, tracks like sunday afternoon at the neighbours & river goddess do not pass to the middle of that kind of mix, having 100+ bpm tracks before and after I would also beatmix the tracks that allow it ( Symetric Lives+Neurotransmitter, etc. )
Anyway, if you intended it to be like that it's perfect, never focus on any "rules" regarding what a mix should look like

Welcome to the spontaneous web of creation!

@Jespar: I`m happy u`ve taken my critique serious
Sadly I don`t have much time now to listen to the mix again and tell you more specific what disturbed me.
But I guess Begemot gave you some good facts.
I`ll let you know, what exactly disturbs me, when I find time again.

So,
first transistion = very beautiful first song, but in my opinion energy goes to much up to the H.U.V.A track ... suddenly there is Boom ... maybe play one other upbuilding trach in between

second transistion = so, u`ve played a Boom Boom track and then go to CBL "Neurotransmitter", which maybe would have been better placed after the first song, due to the cool upbuilding intro ... maybe play another boom boom song instead, coz u have 2 boom boom songs around

third transistion CBL --> Huva : so energy goes down at the end of CBL, coz u play nearlythe whole outro and start the next track really late ... next track also does not really fit atmosperically to the CBL ... two different stories, you know ...

forth transistion
this markus Guentner song is displaced at this place in my opinion, because it`s very lighty, which makes no story-sense for me after the previous mechanicaly track ... you go from a dark mysterious place directly into the brightest light .. I can not do so big steps ...

will continue, when I`ve time again ...
And remember: It`s just my opinion.

@Gunter: Thanks for taking the time to review my set more closely.

I'll go through some general points in my mix, and then defend myself in quote-form. ;-)

To understand my intentions with this journey, let me sketch out my "storyline". First of, you have to imagine this mix being played just half an hour before sunrise.

Parts...

(A)
We have the last bit of the night still present, this is expressed through tracks 1 to 4, and I think the tracks chosen for this fits the purpose fine. I must agree that the transitions in this part could be more smooth and rhythmical, and I think you have a point about the focus on energy in the mix - maybe this isn't cared enough for here. Note to remember for later. Lets continue.

(B)
My idea then is that the "Sunday barbecue" and the Guentner tracks open the sunrise part (track 5-8), where things are beginning to get warmer, where the sun is breaking through. I think "Express Yourself" really makes a good impression about what sunrise is all about - my opinion of course.
But in fact, I think this cosy and relaxed part works well.

(C)
I then have a more melancolic laid-back part beginning from track 9 to 12, finishing of the set, but still uplifting stuff.

And now for the quotes:

Quote:

first transistion = very beautiful first song, but in my opinion energy goes to much up to the H.U.V.A track ... suddenly there is Boom ... maybe play one other upbuilding trach in between

You're right, more could have been done to build up the pace for the HUVA track, but I had limited length of this set, because I needed it to fit a CD. I agree about the first "boom" of the HUVA track - sounds from the previous track should have been less "visible" by then.

Quote:

second transistion = so, u`ve played a Boom Boom track and then go to CBL
"Neurotransmitter", which maybe would have been better placed after the first song, due to the cool upbuilding intro ... maybe play another boom boom song instead, coz u have 2 boom boom songs around

I think the track fits good in regards to atmosphere, but I'm not so glad about the transition from "Symetric lives" to this one. Maybe I should try to experiment more with beatmatching.

Quote:

third transistion CBL --> Huva : so energy goes down at the end of CBL, coz u play nearlythe whole outro and start the next track really late ... next track also does not really fit atmosperically to the CBL ... two different stories, you know ...

Good point here, as I wrote initially. This is something I will try to be more aware of in my coming sets. I do not agree about your other statement though - I think they fit perfectly, CBL -> HUVA.

Well - to sum up things, you've given me the following focuspoints for my further work with dj'ing, that I feel I can use:

* Focus on the "course of energy" in the set, and
* Focus on more rythmical and harmonic transitions.

Not bad, not bad. I'll give a shot when working on my next mix. Thanks.

Friendly thoughts and wishes for a good summer to come.

Jesper.
