... it's no secret that I find most psytrance dull and unimaginative. I've been hearing psytrance for so long that there's a general "been there, done that" feeling whenever listening to 95% of the psytrance tunes I hear today, and out of those 5%, only a small amount truely surprises me (Penta - 1190 was the last track that made me think 'holy shit!!@#' while listening to it).

The dark side of psytrance has been left nearly untouched in the past year, and I love dark music. Not necessarily evil or psychotic, but there has to be something that creeps up on me and makes me think 'this is wrong... and so right'. I have lately found refuge in IDM, Electro and some German Techno sounds (not the noisy hardcore techno, but rather the monotone droning kind). The depth of some of this music is totally astounding, after I haven't heard something that makes me sink into a track like I used to a few years back (when I discovered the wonder of progressive and minimal music, and before that - since the goa days).

I know that psytrance eventually finds something new. In '97 I started growing tired of psytrance and goa and discovered Aphex Twin and Squarepusher (two people that still show something new with each new release), Unkle, DJ Shadow, Death in Vegas and the likes. I still listened to some psytrance, but I never really got deep into it as I had been previously. Then came Son Kite. Once I 'got' their music, it opened a whole new world to me. And once I started hearing Shiva Chandra's stuff in 2001, psytrance became my obsession once more.

I started listening to Antix, P-Woland, and other of the more house oriented style, until one day I just felt like waking up from a dream, discovering that this isn't right, this doesn't have the psychedelic magic I missed so much. Of course, I still found psytrance I enjoyed (Tristan, ManMadeMan, Bigwigs, Charm and the likes), but I started looking for something else - and found it.

Plastikman had always been music I liked, but once I heard the wonderful 'Consumed', specifically, the track Consume, all of the structure games of psytrance suddenly seemed... shallow. Thanks to some recommendations from guys on the internet, I discovered some wonderful new music, and what struck me immediately was the diversity of music in other scenes. IDM ranges from loungish electro/acidjazz with some linear twists to pure psychopathic "I dare you to try following this" music. Techno ranges from soft funky music that mixes well with James Brown to evil clanging, stomping grooves (thanks to a recommendation by one of the Triac duo, the Italian techno guys are wonderful at this) to just deep dark droning. Electro goes from 80s synthpop to slick groovy funk, to relaxing chillout.

And now I look at psytrance. The last five parties I went to, more or less the same music (sometimes in very good taste, I must admit), similar grooves (or none at all), and I just don't think that's enough anymore.

I'll be waiting for the next revolution. It's time to look for some new horizons, a different way of thinking. Until then, I won't be the psytrance addict that listens to psytrance 24/7. When some british guys (and one Israeli guy) said that they find psytrance dull and simplistic, I didn't really believe them. Now maybe I do. Maybe it's just a matter of growing up, not settling for just anything. Maybe it's me and not the music. But enough is enough.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

agree with you 100% kaz... psytrance is really boring these days... seems like everything sounds the same...
i started hearing alot of IDM, Ambient, Dub, Exprimental stuff, its take me higher then any psytrance these days...
i guess its time to move on, take the good from trance and create a new 'style' of music and a new of thinking...

good words my friend couldnt said it better...

House music is not the answer (well, microhouse is, I became a Twerk junky as of late)... but seriously, a giant part of listening and enjoying the music is analyzing it to death and finding new nuances each time. It's not a matter of boundries, but rather a feeling of quality behind the music, the thought put into it - just as more than one abstract painter said "we didn't know exactly what we were doing, but when we saw it, we could feel the richness, the quality behind the work, even when we didn't know why". I guess I'm just trying to put the "didn't know why" bit into words a bit too much           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

I'll be a bit here..

Have U already listened to Databass Sessions 2.2 recently ?
I invite U to give it a chance, if not.

Nectarios had wise words and the best way to avoid boredom is to diversify as much as possible (according to your tastes) your record collection.           .

Im still listening to psytrance because there are still possibilities there and old possibilities that never reached their full potential . Im still waiting for the song which is going to do me over, Ive been close but havent quite reached "that near death" stage yet. I almost believe that when I hear that perfect song, my life here will be complete and I can continue my journeys in the next realm . For that reason I will continue to listen to psytrance because I know that song will come into my life one day, who knows maybe Ill be the one to write it .

dude u've described the plight of many parties and their niche attitude : Play what the crowd likes and play it all night. not only is there need for variety as u say kaz in your music appreciation, but in actual party sets as well..
but have no fear all will be well.... and while u wait i'd recommend anything fom the warp records collection if u listen to squarepusher and the like: give boards of canada and plaid a listen...

I love darkpsy music also!

I will tell you that tha Shpongle's upcoming album will sounds really dark and tribal...

And I recomend you to listen Nocturna, MOS, Bamboo Forest and Sub6... The Sub 6 track called Pounding is pretty dark and groovy, and at the first listen it sounds like a shock for me!

But if you want something really dark and psychedelic, the deep trance (progressive house) israely dj and producer called Moshic is the ONE!
He was the best thing I discover last year!
The guy is a genius!

There's no club to join, there's no need to hear the same sounds 24/7. As much as you don't eat cakes as dinner and as breakfast and drink only imported beer. I for example did last week something that i wouldn't normally do and took Paul Van Dyk's compilation from a friend. Never mind the poor selection and the mixing, it did the job and reminded me that what i really love in the music is the music, the melody. So i went and bought Astral Projection's latest release and re-evaluated it (didn't liked it in the first round) and i was so happy to get that goa energy again after the scratchy, minimal, dark, intricate mind games which are cool but it's merely a snack, a filler between the really good stuff. The melodies. And happilly we are not lacking them today. Sub6 did it shamelessly this year and brought real music with real psychedelia, not to mention Simon Posford and Benji Vaughn. And even the Scando became more melodious with extremely good releases by Ticon, Vibrasphere and Etnoscope.
This dog is to young to get buried yet.

Great post Kaz, (but also sad) i can relate to it quite a bit. One point i will make...i love discovering new styles too, but how many of these styles get heard outdoors in a party enviornment? This is the one thing of psytrance i cannot let go of...i just wish there was more experimentation in the psy music, it seems like a viscious circle, but i dont know where it starts. Labels scared to release different music cause it wont sell. Artists scared to write different music cause the label wont release it. Dj's scared to play different music cause the crowd wont dance? Promters wont book different acts...why? I dont know how the circle will break...its sad.
