Time is never constant; its ups and downs are. But when we lose someone we love, these philosophies come crumbling down, leaving us in an infinite abyss of sorrow.

Rodney was an integral part of the Shanti Jatra movement. His motivation, dedication and foresight were the key driving forces behind Shanti Jatra. With his passing, we’ve lost not just our beloved friend, but the very source of our drive as well. Indeed, these are our most trying times.

To share some recent background on why we’re writing this note to you today, the media and authorities in Nepal have been strictly against trance festivals at large. During one such festival held in Nepal April 2009 (NOT CONDUCTED BY US), an undercover film was shot and later screened as a two-episode series on local news tv channel. Titled MISSION TRANCE, the film brazenly reported how the trance culture in Nepal had become a gateway to substance abuse and illegal activities.

The authorities of Nepal leveraged the previous editions of the festival in order to grow tourism and to improve socio economic conditions of the country. But the April ‘09 exposé made the authorities privy to the
in-depth happenings of trance culture. Soon, they began probing many of us organizers. This, coupled with a recent encounter with Nepal police’s Narcotics cell, left us questioning the safety issues surrounding Shanti Jatra. With mounting pressures from various legal bodies, Including Nepal Tourism Board and medias in Nepal, today we’re left with no choice but to succumb to their demands, and put an end to these festivals.

We believe no words are enough to try and make sense of this string of events. But in all honesty and humility, we’ve tried with all our might to beat this force and keep our Shanti movement going strong. However, with Rodney gone, we’re left with no power to fight the authorities and the media any further. Most importantly, we don’t want to risk the lives and safety of the people visiting the festival.

Keeping the best interests of the people in mind, with a heavy heart, the Shanti Jatra team has decided to CANCEL the 2009 edition of the festival, scheduled for 3-4-5-6 October.

Even as we speak, the Venue is being built from scratch, surround sound being set up, labor hired for help, cottages being built and so on.

We sold an approximate of 224 tickets in presales for this year's festival. Since Rodney held the primary bank account of Shanti Jatra, his demise has made it difficult for us to claim the money in the absence of a written legal will. Therefore, his family has come forward to take responsibility of proceeds of the account. His brother ANTHONY MATHIAS who’s in Banglore – India, is working on all the legal process at this moment. For all those who have purchased the tickets prior to the festival the amount will be refunded as soon as the family is able to release the amount from his account. They are working towards resolving this at this moment. This would take approximately a month's time.

Again, we request all those who have purchased our festival tickets to be patient for further details and proceedings of refund.

If u have already bought the travel tickets and holiday arranged, it would be good idea to not to cancel it and come to Nepal and enjoy the nature. Best thing we would suggest is to go to vipassana mediation starting on 1st of October in pokhara and truly learn the inner peace and spread the shanti in a proper way.

Thank you so very much for the support and kindness you have shown towards keeping the festival alive for 2 editions. We deeply regret the inconvenience and grief that has been caused due to the short comings in our lives.

Let the Shanti spread!
THE SHANTI JATRA TEAM.

Appreciate the decession taken by SJ crew.

Its a wise and sensible decession taken, Keeping in mind the security issues in Nepal with the police and narcs.

I would prefer chilling at home rather then getting busted in a place far far away from home and were seeking help from some one will be a task.

As they say "What ever happens, happens for good".

All the best in sorting out the presale tkts refund....

Thanks and full support to you guys.....

Peace Love and Positivity.

Really sad turn of events this. But the memory of the previous editions shall remain with me for as long as I live and it was a momentous life changing Journey that Rodney and the SJ crew made possible.

Aseem and Rob all the positive vibes for you.           ********************************************

That abyss isn't infinite - it's deep and it hurts, but it isn't infinite

Thanks Ron for the info

Real shame about Rodney - and a bigger shame the crew fell apart also

I'd say remake it - in Rodney's memory - bigger and better than ever before - something he'd be really proud to see

not to quit it

come on - get it back together - and make it a celebration to Rodney

And if this has fallen apart because no-one wants to step up as main organiser - then look outside the box - I for one have a house in Kathmandu that I can kick the rental people out of and let u guys use if needed as a base

I digress

I'll shut up

drugs are doing more harm then good to our music scene . its time people realized, drugs literally only pull you back and down , over a period of time though. while on the otherhand , music only lets you grow.

so just stick with the music, atleast for the sake of our scene.
