N3XU5 - Psycho Therapy -=- Kagdila Records, March 2005

N3XU3 is Luis Miguel Lopes from Portugal. He already release lots of tracks in different labels like Deja Vu Records, Doof Records and Parvati. This is his debut album, released on the North American label Kagdila Records.

I'm doing this review because I think N3XU5 is an under rated dark artist. The guy has a style of his own, with twisted beats and lots of psychedelia. Unfortunately even in the darker side of psytrance people are mostly after the BIG NAMES, and put aside some good artists like this one.

Cover: The cover was made by Digitalys Studios.

http://212.227.206.198/cgi-bin/zoom.cgi?kag1cd016_b.jpg:CDs/kag/kag1cd016.html:;

This release was mastered by Domestic and has good quality.

Tracklist:

01 - Banzai 147 bpm
02 - For a second there 146 bpm
03 - Nasa 60 Seconds 145 bpm
04 - Shiva 147 bpm
05 - Muldrive 146 bpm
06 - Kimochi 147 bpm
07 - Industrial Radiation 147 bpm
08 - Micronova 147 bpm
09 - Gothika 147 bpm
10 - Dark room 148 bpm

Let's see it track by track:

01 - Banzai --> This track starts dark and gets darker After the samples: "Hey you!", around 4:30, the lead synths are piercing my brain and I bet no dance floor can stand this still. Great atmospheres. Good track!

02 - For a second there --> I like this track! New samples from the movie Kill Bill I:
"You didn't think it was gonna be that easy, did you?
You know, for a second there, yeah, I kind of did."

Steady dark style and psychedelic as well! Recommended.

03 - Nasa 60 Seconds --> This is the slower track in this debut, and it's 145 bpm! Samples:

"60 seconds..." Hypnotic sounds and twisted synths all over the track, but not my favorite here.

04 - Shiva --> This track gets really nasty after the forth minute. Long build up: Fast and dirty.

05 - Muldrive --> This great track starts with samples from the mysterious movie Mulholland Drive:

"- You're awake.
I think I misunderstood.
I thought you knew my aunt and that 's why you were here.
- I thought when I woke up...
I thought sleep would do it.
- What 's wrong?
- I just don't know who I am.
- What do you mean? You're Rita.
- No, I'm not.
I don't know what my name is.
I don't know who I am."

I like the main synths, the music really captures the despair atmosphere from the movie.
Another favorite for a frighten night!

06 - Kimochi --> Another track that start with samples, I'm really liking this album!
This time the samples are from the movie Waking Life:

"Like, you know, "water."
We came up with a sound for that.
Or, "Saber-toothed tiger right behind you." We came up with a sound for that.
But when it gets really interesting, I think, is when we use that same system of symbols to communicate all the abstract and intangible things that we're experiencing."

Good and psychedelic track. Makes me dance.

07 - Industrial Radiation --> With an industrial touch that remember me of Mechanix, this is another steady and fast track. Besides the psychedely, not my favorite.

08 - Micronova --> It has a sample I can't understand... For me the real thing starts at 4:00, when the main synths are frying the dance floor... Good ideas here, I like the distorted water drop like sounds.

09 - Gothika --> Another track that starts with a good sample:

"- You have no idea how it feels not to be trusted.
- You've got to trust me too.
- How can you trust someone who thinks you're crazy?"

I like the screams, like in some tracks before, N3XU5 show us he knows how to make a history line anb build and atmosphere in accord with the samples. This is another favorite, very good track!

Another sample:

"- Something is really happening to me...
- You're upset, you're upset... I'm here to help you, trust me...
- It's hard to trust somebody when they think you're crazy..."

This is my favorite track here , evolves in the right way, and is packed with a strong dose of psychedelic elements and effects.

10 - Dark room --> Starts with the sample:

"- What's going on?
- Lock the door!"

It's a long track, my favorite part is the end, but not the best track here.

I recommend this debut for anyone who wants psychedelic and dark music, specially DJs who want to play some not well know but still high quality music.
I love the samples here!

Verdict: 7.5/10. What could improve is that the total time is less than 72 minutes, beside the 10 tracks there's 8 minutes of emptiness.

Favorites: 2(!), 5(!), 6, 9(!!)

Buy it here:

1.Little tradiotionnal japanese music alike intro before things really start with the kindly hysteric ‘banzai’ sample avalanche all along the track . All the Nexus trademarks are appearing here & sum up quite well this album orientation: dark psytrance style, main focus on the output’s energy, melody notes theme hammered several times conferring a leaping feel. I find the final cut to be vey raw in this first tune.

2. For A Second There…got slightly more variation on the kick & it’s less hysteric oriented ; also the bassline is much more rolling, you could perceived some few discret bleeps or twisted sounds.

3.Come-back to more hysterico-leaping style in Nasa 60 secs, the very well known nasa sample appears here, you know ’60 seconds…for a second now…everything here is looking very good…’. The soundscapes is more twisted than in previous one, for example at 3’45 you can hear a climbing tone imitating a bit the sound made when you fill a glass with water.

4. Don’t see where’s the link between the tracktitle Shiva & its content, nevermind. The structure sounds more minimal & it’s dully. There’s a big shit happening at the end of this tune, tracks 4 & 5 have been badly cut : the final kick cut of Shiva appears on the start of Muldrive, a shame !

5. It’s hard to explain why Muldrive is far the best track of the album seeing that the 10 ones are very similar. The explanation may come from a more expressed sprightly, raving feeling.

6.Kimochi succeeds a bit in keeping the previous trend, indeed sort of combination of more positive but still dark spirit than most of the other songs.

7. Industrial Radiation posseds a more interesting & catchy build up, made of some more unpolished tones married with dryer, harsher textures. Definitivly Nexus goes more agressive here, a slight hardtek/indus background flavour.

8. Micronova wins the shrillest & most mettallic sounding prize of the album with an alternative rumbling & bouncing bassline bonus touches .

9. Gothika got an insistent power to catch your brain when it’s done, throws in gear the 5th , reaches 147Km/H or er BPM and never look back or slow down and go its own way …through the midlle of dancefloor. Get ready to lose some surperflue weight by dancing on this one.

10. The gimmick lead & rythmic is funny, mischievous & very captivating, Dark Room, not so dark as it says, is a good idea for concludes the album bringing a breath’s took of fresh air.

Climax :5,9
Alternative decent tunes :1,6,8,10

An honest darkpsy debut album for Nexus, caracterized by a main focus on energy & a little too homogeneous content but some nice intentions not always fully achieved or at least a bit lately (the second half of Psycho Therapy is a step above).
I mean if it’s like Nexus encountered worries to start his car & after succeeded, the lapsed time don’t permitted him with his ‘diesel car’ to drive very fast & far.
Be sure that next time for his new album, with his debut album experience, Nexus will swap his diesel car with a more efficient & sportive one .
6,5/10

We have here a very solid debut-album. NeXus has the ability to build really effective rhythmics with some great elements, like sharp hihats and metallic snare noises. This is the good point of the album. After that, the basslines remain quite common, but NeXus doesn't hesitate to change them several times in the tracks, introducing an interesting dynamic into them. The sampling work is good too, the spoken words are worked with skill, and often used with a smart intention. About the concepts, sometimes they are interesting, like in example the first track, titled "Banzai" and introduced with some samourai-movies ambiance..But sometimes they make me wonder, like the track Shiva.. I don't really get it.. Same goes for titles like "MulDrive" and "Gothika" that are directly taken from the movies the samples come from. Ok it is not essential, but such details do however lower the 'level' of the album..

Back to the Music, in my opinion, these are not really home-listening vibrations, but definitaly deejay-friendly, and designed for loud systems. Many tracks will perfectly do it in outdoor events, due to these deep changes in the rhythmics and the loudness of the kick, like in example in "Industrial Radiation". NeXus also knows how to make very rough sounds and cooler ones contrasting, but I tend to regret a little bit the using of the same recipes all along the album..

You might be surprised but my favourite track here is probably "For a Second There" because of its hypnotic touch, there are less layers here than in most of the other tracks of the album, and the bassline is reduced to an optimal simplicity.. Here is the groOve, here I get some fun shaking my ass.. The track gets slowly but constantly more and more psycho but not going too far, as it can happen, in my opinion, with "MicroNova".. I'll tend to consider "For a Second There" as the 'alternative' track of the album, and I hope NeXus will try some other "psygressive" deliriums like that one in the future..

A little word about the artwork, the picture in itself is looking good, but the text layout is too 'light'.. Very centred, it doesn't bring anything to the whole.. Underlined with some couloured stripes, it looks very common, not to say scholastic.

But as I said, this record will fit more into a deejay bag than on a shelf.. So nevermind

Night-time Psycho Fever Deejays, this one is for you, you will make some people go crazy with such an album in your bag.. "Hardcore" freaks, you who are able to listen to more than 140 bpms stuff early in the morning, after the breakfast, this is for you, hehe..

Enjoy !

Well, I do not know where to start with this.. So yeah, i got this CDR promo in the mail right.. It was a MAJOR turn-off right from the start to get a released promo copy CD in exchange for a long, detailed review, so i will cut this very short.

I have to mention that the style of this album is not really my cup of tea to start with, due to the lack of melodies. Its more like, psy-sounds... hehe..

I must critic the order of the tracks on this CD, because the first track IMO is the best on this album, and the fact that it opens the CD leaves you woundering while listening to the remaining 9 tracks.

So yeah, the first track starts off great, and really takes you somewhere. I was shocked when i first popped the CD in my player and i was like "wow, this is unexpected".. Then, the second song starts, and the third, and fourth, six, nine, ten... i can't tell the difference anymore.. They are all high paced tracks with a pretty ok production sound like NRS's album, and i would say that that's the artist that comes to mind when listening to this.. maybe Kindzaza too..

LuggaduggLuggaduggLuggaduggLuggaduggLuggaduggLuggaduggLuggaduggLuggaduggLuggadugg...

A good dancefloor album if your in to the nighttime wave of music, but if your looking for intense trances this isn't for you.. so not for me, but maybe for you??

Good luck Nexus...           "VA - REWIRED" OUT NOW !! (techtrance invasion) ---> http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/86303/forum/9

N3xu5 - "Psycho Therapy" [Kagdila]

1. "Banzai"
Some beeping noises & tweaked voices before the 16th bassline begins. Not really a lot going on here. Monotonic synth noises with a filter sweep up & down provides most of the rhythm. Clean drum sounds provide very little variation or groove.. this is straight down the line killah & I don't mean that in a good way.

2. "Nasa 60 Secs"
Starts off a bit better.. at least there seems like maybe there will be some musicality to it. The sample asks, 'You didn't think it was gonna be that easy did you?' Sounding easy so far, not that it's easy listening, but light on in the way of psychedelia. Simplistic melodies. Nice synth swells in the background though. Drops back to a nice bassline a few minutes in. Some nice percussion. Nothing to really bring it home.

3. "For a Second There"
Well I think the track list must be around the wrong way, as this starts off with yet another use of stupid moon landing samples. However it sounds a bit better than the last one, but let's see if it goes anywhere. Well it does seem to continue to build, but once again, the sounds are monotonic, the samples are moronic &.. well... it just doesn't DO anything for me. No real drive or peak, though the end is a *little* bit more interesting.

4. "Shiva"
Om y god! It doesn't kick straight into 16ths!!! Oh there it goes. This one sounds better again - at least the album keeps getting better the further through I get. There are some great sounds in the background of this.. just really creepy, drippy psychedelic synths. Nothing *really* happens until the last minute of the track, where there are more layers, signifying the 'peak', which is pretty much right at the very end.

5. "Muldrive"
This sounds pretty solid. Samples might be spooky if you were having problems on a big dose of acid in the middle of the night. This is a bit more atmospheric. Rhythms are still straight up & down though. Slight change in bassline 4 minutes in. Drops back briefly at 5 minutes to give you a break, then back into 16ths. Some indication that this track may actually have a peak is given by something almost (but not quite) resembling a melody at 6 minutes.

6. "Kimochi"
Nice effect on the sample at the start. Some much groovier rhythms in this one. Almost sounds like 'morning killah'! Definitely my favourite so far. Bit busier in the mids & highs. More atmospheric as well. Still lacking a little something, but that's just my personal preference for peakiness in tracks shining through. I just don't get how music can be 'music' without melody (& I'm not talking about full on trance melody here).

7. "Industrial Radiation"
Please let this be an emotive industrial number. Well OK, there are some nice samples in the background to set an oppressive atmosphere. That's a good start. Pretty pumping track with a nice bassline that, whilst repetitive, is at least not monotonic, for the most part anyway. Things are getting a bit annoyingly repetitive around the 4 minute mark, but it's also somewhat hypnotic. The peak is probably not well enough defined to make me go crazy.

8. "Micronova"
This doesn't grab my attention at all until the bassline settles down around the 3 & a half minute mark.. up until then it's just pound pound pound. The synth line after 4 minutes is pretty annoying. Nope, don't like this one.

9. "Gothika"
Well I'm hoping this will be as good as the name suggests. Some funny screaming samples & car crash noises. Nice tight percussion in the build at the start of the track. Only a minute & a half in when we've already had more tonal variation than the rest of the tracks on the CD put together. Did I mention this track has nice, tight percussion? It's very tight. Cheesey sample just before 6:00. Not as good as it could've been.

10. "Dark Room"
I like the way the bassline steps up & down. It settles down into a monotone about a minute & a half in. Getting pretty tired of this CD now. Likelihood of this track playing out is very low. Very happy that he gives the 16th basslines a rest with a couple of minutes to go, but I've heard enough. Not that great.

Generic killah! Basslines with some mildly interesting percussion that is occasionally, though rarely, groovy.

4/10           new Hadal Drop album on the way
