A lot of minimal groups and artists are staring in our act...
music [ IMO ] = musical harmonies and melodies that make their own emotions by combining notes and tones.
most of the creations of the minimal genre are totally un-musical.
SO the question is ... can we say that minimal is music ?
Can we say that a pure beat with some groovey and cool fx are truly music ???
well...sure we call it music, but is it really music ??? |

You see there is also another very big part of music that is important to many people (myself included) its called R Y T H M...its what makes people shake there booty

Look up music in a dictionary, and then there will be no need for this burgeoning minimal vs. full-on thread.

well yeah, which is fine if you have interesting enough rhythm
case in point - etnoscope - very little 'musical' (harmony/melody) content here, just tons of percussion. however the percussion is so complex, polyrhythmic, etc, it totally satisfies me.
for me there is a lot of psy which doesnt really have any traditional 'musical' content, but if you look at what it DOES have, its not really too interesting (to me) either. a 4/4 kick isnt too special rhythmically, and some weird noises that sound exactly like the weird noises on hundreds other record dont interest me much either.
(nb: i'm not stereotyping... i know there is great music in all styles... i'm talking about the bad examples here)
so i just dont really like that style. and, because one of the main things i like in my listening is melodies, harmonies, etc, the easiest way of describing WHY i dont like it , it to say that it is "less musical".
but even if u think like this never make the mistake of thinking its "not music".
first just try and define music!
you soon realise the only definition that holds up is something like this: "sound, which has been organised or arranged in some way, for the purpose of enjoyment , to cause an emotional reaction, etc"
Thus if the composer writes it as music - and, perhaps more importantly - if some people consider it as music - then it is music! 
as timsensient says - without any melody you still have the rhythmic domain , and furthermore, you still have the realm of sound design. this has been a very important frontier of electronic music since the days of schaeffer.

i think that says it all.
a lot of non-sence stuff is written about progressive/minimal trance. one of them is that it dosent get anywhere..the other is what our dear member conclusioned here...
well groove and rythem is defently music as far as im concerned..kick and bass line duplicated over and over from artist to artist with changes on the pads/melody over it dosent get anywhere as well.
if u wanna understand the importence of groove and complexity of it..go listen to james brown.

Anyway...my point is not to degrade the quality of minimal. i just said that IMO its unmusical...ofcourse even silence is music, but i need more then a rhythm in a track to call it musical. this is my opinion, Just asked u guys if U can call it real music...I guess u can!
