Imo a great pair of headphones sound bettar compared to anything else. period.
In some of the parties I have been to.. I can say headphones wouldve been much bettar.. (irrespective of the dj's talent) think about it, speakers could start jarring... and you wouldnt really know if you're standing close to the speakers.
In a party, Try listening to the sound from different corners far from the speakers... you would know the difference!
when you're in a club the sound is set in such a way as to get in to your head.. its loud and clear & resonant, atleast most of the times, hence it does sound bettar and more intensified because its meant to, as its a place for music! Even if they play mp3 it would still sound good and you wouldnt know...
also, influence of psychedelics/alchohol/or whateva else you consume, the mood, the vibes can all add on to the effect of music.. not just the sound strictly speaking.
