We (3 people) sat down and listened to every single demo and also replied back to every one (no standard reply). Basically it was done every Sunday and took us many hours. But it was worth every minute! |

How long ago was this? Perhaps the general quality of demos has decreased over time.

It was not so long ago (The label was shut down in 2009) and may I add also not in this scene but in the House scene. So of course there is a difference. And I did not say all demo's was amazing. Far from. But occasionally a real gem popped up making the effort worth while.

well i do have to say that beat agency makes a very good point about the label shouldering the promotional responsibilities. but the reason I said what I did is because of a number of factors... but mainly i say that because its easy for an artist to sell their music on the major online stores without needing a label; cd sales are down; small labels are losing money; and promotion is becoming much easier through social networking online.

I do not think labels are "history". They just need to find their place in the future.
There will always be a demand for skilled PR and Promotion professionals (within labels or as freelancers) who know how to push releases to the world and the right target groups. Social networks are OK but not a good enough promotion tool if you want to live from music. Here I speak in commercial terms and in a broad term regarding genres of music. There are many other ways to promote a release. Ways not many artist are capable of using when trying to promote themselves.

I think it's right and fair,
for my op, artist should do their do,focusing on music and djing, no more
Spamming people on Fb,myspace and more leave the time it found, in my experience i'm veeery pissed when i enter myspace and see 10 new msg of ridiculous spamming, no personal connection,"hey nigga, new ep out"and shit like that,
as a simple listener i tend to remove them asap and naturaly they end in the trash and next time i see that name trashing again and block user
I think also (supposition here) that party organizers booking agencies and similar, are more prone to talk with professionals of that field rather than with artists wich are busy ppl, plus they gonna keep regular contacts to have their name standing above the mass.
One thing i was surprised to read is that label receive 50+ demos at week, i was stil thinking psytrance like a more "niche" sector, not like Minimal-tecno,house and other more populare electronic scenes (at least in europe)

Labels are not going to disappear.
Maybe change in form, but they will not disappear.
It just makes it easier to listen to music.
Let's say I'm some busy guy who has not much free time to listen to music. I will obviously not listen to every guy that promotes himself on the internet hoping to find that special one that I like. I will just get releases by a specific label which I know, and I can expect the style and quality.

ok, so what i see happen all around me is,,, artist complete's 3-4-5 tracks, finds a small label( his friend from another country), releases a free net release, then hopes to get booking within his country, and maybe outside also, and they mayeb even to get picked up by a big label.. this is what is happening, and everyone is folloing this same formula.
so,what all changes do you think should be made to this approach, from an artist's point of view, and would love to hear what established labels have to sat about picking up new talent from this wide sea of chaos.i guess we must continue to probe this, because till now nothing is clear as to what the right approach is, to get good quality music out( for both labels and artists).

as a dj, i used to spend hours in records shop and listened a lot of vinyls...in order to find masterpieces.
it's an hard job to find good music but i thought that labels were all doing the same - as djs and listeners do to find good tracks.
If it's not recommended to send it directly to labels and if people are really pissed off with mail on FB, i guess times become hard for artists with no connection (except adsl ;-).
promote your music the way you want. |
