probably a question for djz and label managers - have you ever have a problem with cancelling release because of mp3 spreading over the net?

how does the music on mp3's get out of the studio before it is realeased?

Thats very easy to answer.... Sorry to offend some labels and artists but I guess the truth always hurt

THE LABEL SENARIO:

1.The artist make a CD in the studio and give it to the label that are going to release it.

2. The label give a copy of the CD to the label DJ so the new CD can be promoted at parties.

3. The label DJ give it to other DJ friends that give it to other DJ friends that give to other friends that eventually put it on the internet.

It have to be said that there are labels out there that are professional and can be trusted

THE ARTIST SENARIO:

A new CD is made. The artist give it to a friend /friends because they really want to have a copy. One friend is really not a very good "friend" and give it to other friends and eventually it end up on the internet.

And again there are friends that can be trusted

Result in both senarios = Massive downloading of the new CD before it's even relased = bad sales = canel of release.

high there.....

agree with EP.....it's all about trust in friends and DJ's shall promote the upcoming stuff, is very hard to find these days.....
If everybody who loves this music, would act like I do ( sorry to praise me here ), and go buy his favs, mp3's would be no problem.....usually the quality is not that good, and after a professional master its for sure worth to buy......there we are at the point EP mentioned with DJ's give DJ's and they give friends, wich turns to the point of trust !

not easy.....but manageable....

keep the vibe !!!           I just came out, cause it seems there was a noise outside ! .... added to Parvati Records rooster .. check webside !!!

MMMM hard one this i think.... MP3's are wrong.... but even wizzy noise have said they dont mind because if people really want the cd then they will go buy it...

MP3 = good for promotion ... thats a good way to spread the word... but then do it for 1 and 1 track on the cd only.

my two cents....

chi-a.d. ?

Yeah... that was quite pointless. To put some back-story to this, CHI-A.D. had completed a full album back in 2001 that was later leaked to the net after delays from their label at the time (Nova-Tekk)... at some point we grew to discuss it and I offered to take a pair of tracks and print up a vinyl for them, seeing as how I was deeply into vinyl collecting, the old school Goa sound, and rather upset that nothing fabulous was getting a release... at the time I was quite an idealist about the whole thing and figured that even if the mp3s were out there people would still buy the 12" since the songs are so good. Well, this wasn't quite the case as I learned in the last year-and-a-half! I had more than a few distributors turn me down simply because the tracks were out on the net already... others turned me down simply because of the medium ("no one buys vinyl anymore") or due to poor communication - my fault or theirs. So really, the end result of my foolish idealism was that I still have hundreds of records sitting in my closet and I am like ten billion times wiser or more cynical - depending on how you look at it, perhaps they are one and the same despite this I still ship out copies weekly to private buyers who find out about the release one way or another... in that sense I consider it success, for the starved real-Goa-on-vinyl fanatics do have a way to get their fix

To address the original intent of the post... if it is one track amongst many on a CD I don't think you have to worry... if the entire release has been compromised you may as well cancel the whole thing. And no one should bother with vinyl anymore unless you have cash to burn. The end.

I know a certain well known act who totally cancelled their Europe distribution since it was first released in Japan, downloaded throughout the world and almost pointless to release now...           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

an idea a friend and I talked about the other day regarding mp3 and cd releases. You have labels and artists that release music. One person buys the cd and say only three tracks on the entire cd have much apeall. This person now feels a bit had . He/she just payed twenty bucks for three tracks. This leads to discontent and future stealing of music to circumvent the market. Now say a record label puts that same music up on the web for donwload( something like i-tunes). where a person can go and download those three tracks for a fraction of the cost of a whole cd. The label can provide the files in many compression rates at apropriate prices. Better compression rate higher price. Now there is a place for Dj's to go and get just those tracks they want and not steall them. The label would still release the album in it's full form just maybe produce less and have less loss if it doesn't sale well. I also think this would open up grounds for more inovation in music . giving artists room to be more daring with the releases. On the website artists could put bonus tracks up. Stuff that otherwise might not get released... just an idea....
peace;
