For some time I'm wondering to buy an analog synthesizer.
And i will be very appreciated that synth will sound similar to Sh 101. Of course i know that the moderns synts has different filters etc. and the sound never be exactly as sh101.
Im thinking about MiniBrute, Mopho, or Slim Phatty. If anyone of you has those synts and can write some words about how they sounding?
there will be plugin emulation by tal coming or strobe that can sound very similar, there is also D16 lush 101 but if you want hardware i m not sure there is any..Fr XS is often reported as beeing able to sound close to it,even if it s some guys that i trust opinion i would need to a/b by myself to really tell...
cwejman s1 mk2 can also sound similar on some sound..
i have this diagram from a guy owning both the 101 and Xs, and in the green range/settings these supposed to sound very similar to the point it can be hard tell who is who from what he say but something to take with a grain of salt..just the filter i think may be different design, also the envelop are fast on the Xs , but i feel the 101 have a more precise snap ,could be wrong dunno..
personanly for the price i would sure get a Xs anyday other the 101 he can do a lot more and is all new but depend how much close you want to be to the 101 sound.. best always to get the real deal if you want the sound spot on.. or maybe a mc 202 or jupiter 6 could do too
it seems thing that use chips are not as high quality as discrete stuff from what people say..no clue about all this.. but some say the sh09 sound better ,thicker than the 101 that use curtis ships.
the Xs is a bit like virus, zebra ,massive..it s flexible... so some demo could sound totally different and some other very close depending the way it s programed but check the Xs demos on future retro site on some sound it can sound definetly rolandish ..would need to find some classic 101 sound to try to reproduce them.
lot of the patchs there sound like it came from the Xs,if not most of them..
sure it was not out yet..but you can make lot of these sound with similar caractere with it , need to roll of the top as the xs have a full bandwitch that can contribute to make it sound more modern imo
I am using my Slim Phatty for all the tasks I used the SH-101 for.
LFO sync to track tempo for them classic goa S&H VCF and VCO Sync patches...YES!
The sound is very different and although I do miss the Roland sound for some things, having full MIDI implementation on the Slim Phatty means that I can have stereo parts (with twice the VCOs) of patches I could only have in mono with the SH-101.
After that I don't miss the SH-101 that much.
Its a personal issue, but I cannot stress how great it is to have stereo analog patches from doing the good ol' "its so nice, record it twice" trick.
Which is a completely different thing than running a mono synth through the MF-108 and having the wet output, phase reversed and have the dry sound in the middle and the wet output phase reversed.
Which is a completely different thing than running a mono synth into the MF-103 and having a stereo phaser with the added option of bi-phasing it by running the MF-102 LFO output into the MF-103s Sweep In and having another completely different type of stereo imaging that sounds like you are drenched in acid on headphones.
guys sound rolandish enough? wihtout the fm i m sure it s pretty damn close to some old roland ,maybe roll of some high too...transients were smoothed driving distressor input with dist and mf 108 otherwise it s sharper
Nah, sounds good, but it does not sound Rolandish.
Does it matter though? It sounds very nice as it is, I would not worry about getting it to sound like an SH-101.
i think it s cause of the fm, but thanks mate sound good to me too.
i remember a shoutout on gearsultz lot of people thought the phatty was a roland on the patch posted..so it probably can get close on some sounds too but i think the filter is probably really different
Yup, the VCF is totally different, as is the VCO.
Don't get me wrong, I love the SH-101...but vintage synth prices are insane...There is a new breed of ebay buyer, the collectors....people that have cash and spend stupid amounts to get vintage gear and a lot of them, don't even use them to make music...a lot of them, don't make music in general...hence the collector attribute.
This breed of people has driven vintage synths prices into insane territory...add to the fact that new analog synths are being made that sound absolutely brilliant, have full MIDI implementation, are cheaper than vintage synths and are under a warranty and I don't think I am ever going to buy a vintage synth...unless I find one dirt cheap from a seller that does not know what they are selling.
To be completely honest, I am not GASing for a vintage synth either...There are a lot of new analog/hybrid/digital synths I would rather have, than their vintage counterparts.
true ture great times we are in for synths...moog slim sub /sem pro /boomstar/ ms20 / dominion/ vermona ect, vintage cost way too much today ,jupiter 303 ect cost crazy price
isnt xoxbox a 303 clone and not a 101 clone or is there a similar clone for the 101 in xox world?
