but of course you can have different settings relative to the same space. you can make a sound seem incredibly close or far away, just by changing the reverb settings.

yes this can give better result imo.
but it s not only about space but also as fx to enhance sound,to polish sounds give wow effect at same time..and this definelety need to be tweaked on each sound for best result .

also good headphone can be usefull to check/tweak verbs

don't really like panning automation, it can cause the stereo to sound out of focus, depending on the speed of the automation. Slower would be better.

Depends: i many times do it on the instruments! And the amount translates to "spread" in such occasions, so it doesn't get out of focus. You can choose your lfo shapes to taste and the rate to, so it's a win win. I feel that some subtle sounds can gain from this kind of movement, and it can help to fit the sound in the mix, or out of the way of other sounds... Depends. But it's a great effect by itself.

auto pan stuff like soundtoy's or the one that comes with ableton, or even using the Max's LFOs is cool to. Really depends on what you're doing.

try this on some sounds if the top is " harsh ,digital" try adding slight noise or lofi effect their in a sweet spot, it can turn out the top to lush sounding when it blurr/mix with what was unpleasant ,it s a bit suprising as it should make the top even worst but it can do the oposite when suited ,i think it s a bit similar to what happen with some reverb that make the sound more lush , or part of it. (like the old lexicon that are full of artifacts)

yep, that's part of why some people still claim some old samplers provide a crunchier sound then later more modern and clean sounding ones. some music, like classic hip hop, has totally benefited from that. even some psybass has some layer on the lines you mention there, just making that top part of the sound pass through with a touch of lo fi distortion in there...

and indeed, some old kinds of reverb, namely spring reverb - the cheap kind - could provide something to the sound, even though it was thought out as a shortcoming of the units back then...

btw, what bitcrusher and downsample units do you like?

SDRR ! thoguht me some time to appreciate it but this thing is top notch to emulate input /ouput, analog color from transformers ect.. but as it have many option it s a bit complicated to get great result at first.. as it s not full of sweet spots. u have to work on it, i use it often to emulate i/o or add slight color.. i didnt like it much then asked tony the guuy who created it some setting to archive what i was after andnow i really enjoy it . not sure it s best for lot of amount of sat/disto thoguht, havent used back like this lately.. dc8c is also a amazing comp but same as sdrr you have to learn well all the settings to get the result you are after quiclky. these 2 are ultra powerfull combo, low price but for me and my taste sharing the top of plug quality with tdr stuff and many others..but these are low price

i like more high quality flexible saturator with flexible ultra clean comp and eq these days , period...but flexibilty is the strenght of digital/in the box mix.. that flexiblty can lead to better sound even if the tools in themself don't sound as great as some analog stuff

even in some converters/sound interface design they might not use very steep anti alising filters to get a bit of color as it can make the high sounding nicer it seems

on drums.. some harmonics some bitcrusher .. nice top when it work it s like magic thought having nice samples to tart with is still best..

to have nice top end the samples used for drums matter a lot ,the problem with many sample librarie is that the sample come from other sample libraries that have already been processed...it s hard to find some lush sounding drums lot of them have top that sound like low encoded mp3 to me or digital edge with that shit load of processing made with plugins.. just drum machine/synth into a weel suited analog comp and eq or maybe even plugins, some layering sound 10 times better than the shit u find in lot sample librarie cause the sound have lost their natural qualities with too much or not suited processing/ bad tools

Depending on DB levels won’t always be a great idea – in many cases you would find that the instruments frequencies are louder than what the actual amplitude shows. So leveling everything on the DB meters ain’t always gonna give accurate/balanced results. The Bass frequencies just loves to take over – always being louder.

I understand that in Trance the K&B should be the main act, however – ironically it should merely be in the background – providing the subtle muscle for the track. Giving you more balance together with the other sounds. Louder doesn’t always equal more powerful.

A way to get past this is to use a frequency analyzer.

Keeping in mind that we have a 3db per octave decrease as we head up the hertz, it’s much easier to achieve a respectful balance.

With plugins like Izotope Ozone, you can import a reference track in your DAW and take a snapshot, when the track is at its fullest, in the “equalizer” section. Then you can use that slope to level the frequencies of your own tracks. Putting the spectrum hold on 3sec would give a more stable slope.

Cheers

May be a stupid question, but do you always mix starting from all faders down? When I do that my tunes tend to sound very different than what they were during the composing stage. Probably because I focus so much on correct levels and somewhat lose the overall picture of the track...?

That does tend to happen, because in the beginning as you add new elements - its a whole new sound for your ears to take in. Also note that all sounds consist of frequencies - so if you're "randomly" bringing the faders up on mixdown, the frequencies mix differently than when you composed- thus giving different results.

*However with good monitors and a well treated room this should not be an issue.

Things change through time, so you'll never have the same results with a mixdown. Every db makes a difference.
