Greetings folks.. Thought of sharing something that ive been wanting to for sometime with regards to mixing while DJíng.

Now the standard approach is obviously... listening to the track on one side of the headphone while listening to the other on the monitor. Do quite a few of you mix on headphones ? I sometimes find myself more comfortable mixing on headphones than with the standard approach. Quite a few times i find it distracting with the standard approach.... cld be reasons such as the PA system being too loud, noises at the party... (all of which are variable..)...

I know it may not be technically correct to mix like that... and also that... there sometimes are no strict guidelines with regards to mixing... But any1 regularly mixing on headphones??

share your thoughts...!

I almost always use my headphones to mix. It's more accurate and it's a sure fire way to be accurate no matter what kind of system you are playing on.

I only use the monitors to check my eq levels.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

For shitty monitors, use Headphones.

imo there is no right way to do it.
I think mixing with one headphone seen as proper way to do it, is cause lots of big names do it so, but also lots of big names have started at time when there was no split que on mixers or anything like that so only way of hearing two tracks was to keep one side open.

I use headphones for mixing all the time, only drop them out when mixing out and bonus for that is when u are living with kids that have to sleep at night u can mix with only headphones on, so at home i rarely even put speakers on           http://www.myspace.com/polly_potb

When I start to beatmatch the incoming track, I have just the incoming track in the headphone and the current track in the monitors.

Then once I am almost beatmatched, I switch to BOTH tracks in the headphone and the current track in the monitor, with the cue blend set so that the incoming track is louder. This helps me tell if I'm a little bit off, especially if the monitors are far away or there's a lot of echo making it hard

Once I'm completely beatmatched I take the headphones completely off and use the monitors to mix, or turn the headphones to master and put them both on (if the monitors suck).

It really sucks if I have bad monitors AND a mixer that doesn't have cue blend (like DJM-400), because then I am just screwed.

Headphones can help if you have a really bad room, but I wouldn't rely on them alone unless you're just starting out.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

I always rely on the headphones as way too often you encounter poor monitoring (and sometimes no monitoring at all).           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

Another nice thing about mixing on headphones is that it's easier to hear a beat slip on them rather than over a monitor (meaning that you can correct it before it is audible over the sound system).

You also don't have to listen to any reverb, bass being kicked back off the far wall or other noises going on at the venue you are playing at.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

yeah, for me is good to do a beatmatch using both headphones, when is all sync and the track is open, i take off the headphones and use just the speakers           ``We shall not cease from exploration - And the end of all our exploring - Will be to arrive where we started - And know the place for the first time.``
