Headphones only, no mono split, both tracks in both ears simultaneously, can't imagine it any other way really Best way to match the tracks without the audience hearing it is to have them playing on top of each other on quality headphones, how else lol           -------------- Dark & Twisted Night Psy --------------

For sure, headphones is the way to go. beat match the tracks and make sure everything is synchronized on the headphones, and then maybe take off one side while doing the actual mix, i.e. switching over the bass or mids etc. but keep em on, just in case of tempo corrections etc. more clarity the headphones have, better the mix. they really help catch that annoying clicking double kick that can pop up while beatmatching when tracks are like <1 bpm off.

Untill i read this thread i always mixed with one ear heasdphone
the other ear monitor. I must say its alot more accurate to mix both ears on the headphone
but i also think it improves your musical hearing to mix with
monitor and headphones. This make it alot more easy to beatmix
after u get used to doing this with one ear headphone one ear monitor.

Headphones for beatmatching, and once I have them sync I use monitors to mix (with the tracks up to PA) and go all the way with monitor-headphone comb; and if tracks start to double click, I go back to headphones to fix it with pitch bend until match'em back.
But commonly I use Headphones, cause monitors are not always well setup, and other times there are no monitors LOL xD           www.myspace.com/vensker

You can fix beatmatching without using the headphones, if you can tell the difference between a kick drum with bass and a kick drum without bass.

Or you can intentionally set one track very very slightly too slow or too fast, so that when it starts to go off you know which way it's going to go off.

I want to try mixing with canalphones + cue split. The only problem is that not all mixers support cue split and I can't START beatmatching without having it split (I can sometimes but if it starts to go way off I'm screwed), so I want to build a custom little amp box, that takes the headphone out and the monitor out and lets me cue split on mixers that don't have it built in.

What can you do when the volume in the DJ booth is so loud, even with the monitors turned down and headphones up it's hard to hear when you are trying to cue up the next track?

This has happened several times and it really fcks me up. I have decent headphones too. Good cup around the ear that blocks out a lot of outside noise. Still can't hear unless I really blast the headphones to the point of self mutilation.

Anyone encounter this and any solutions?

Ask the technicians or the club owner to lower it a bit.

Happens quite a bit I think, especially when the system has a lot of heavy bass, so much so that it makes it hard to hear the kick in your headphones. Your solution above is pretty much it I think, unfortunately. I don't see asking the sound tech to turn it down as an option if people are enjoying it

If it is so loud that you cant hear your headphones properly, isnt the main volume on the dancefloor also way to high?
In that case I guess I really would ask the technician to turn it down. If the sound is too loud it just sucks. The levels are usually distorted and it is bad for everybodies ears.

I personaly need to have a good monitor set up...
I can use the headphones but it seems like I have a better time with my ears listening to both.
I only have the headphone cup 1/2 way on my ear so I can hear only the pop of the kick in my head phone then beatmatch while listening to the monitor and match up the pop of the kick in the new track.

My headphonesand ears take a real beating like this though I have them up really loud when I dj.

Dude!

I would advise you to try and use as low a volume on your phones as possible.

You wanna perserve your ears!

From when i started DJing,i kept to this rule...it was the way i was taught.

I think it's funny that this is even a debate.

Go outside the psy scene to raves or clubs and every single DJ mixes with one ear headphones one ear monitors. It's almost universally agreed to be the best way.
