you should get a sc with more inputs and later on a patchbay (or the other way round). it's true what they've been telling you:
you will not get a quality mixer for <500$...

i bought a rme fireface uc a few weeks ago and it works like a charm. 8 analog ins, you can use it without a computer stand alone and you have the possibilty to get another 8 inputs using the adat interface. the latency can be set rly lowww and the drivers are rock solid.

mixers in this pricerange wont make the sound better, you just might get a different workflow.

i second that. the direct recording into sound card rocks. the quality loss because of even a $1500 mixer will be immense. such recordings can be used only for tv commercial voice overs or live performances in bars hehe

I have a a&h zed14, it sounds nice, good eq's but the usb interface sucks, you can only record 1 channel at the same time so you still need a soundcard with lots of ins and outs to route audio from and back to your computer
I recently bought a focusrite saffire pro 40 interface, works much better, it has lots of i\o,good quality pre-amps,DI inputs!,clever in the box routing possibillities and takes less space then the big mixer.
If you really want to mix out of the box you can consider a M-audio projectmix, avid command8 or mackie onyx.           http://soundcloud.com/euphoricapsy

unless you going to spend big bucks for a mixer that adds character... fuk it. You'll end end up with a box that adds crap if anything noise into your signal. I'd get audio card with lots of inputs. I got 2 RME fireface800 and got everything going direct inputs no mixer i mix itb. I also got some synth going straight to hardware compressor to direct soundcard (waldorf pulse & DSI evolver)
real nice... I got an sh101 which is controlled via midi/cv then i got 2 seperate outs one thru a old analog distortion pedal and the other direct to sound card. I think everything is set-up nice it takes take to build your chain in your studio but after 100's of dollars spent and sleepless nites figuring out why i can't get the results i wanted I end it up with a big network, which is great for me though it did cost alot if you it in for the long haul I say save up and get it done right.
