Media Coverage of Trance in your country ?

Hi,

I'd like to know how our little scene is (as long as it is...) perceived in your country. For example, to be more precise : is there any specialized magazine ?

What I heard (maybe these are unfounded common places ) :

- In Israel, Psy Trance was (is ?) broadcasted on the national radio programs. There is a huge police repression on parties, looked upon as drug parties.

- In Germany, there is a ("the") specialized magazine called Mushroom Mag.

- In France, there was a small one called "Transe Goa Vibes" which sought a while ago. In the major Techno magazines (Coda, Trax), Goa Trance is considered to be a dead genre since 1998 ("always the same sounds blah blah..."). So there are hardly any reviews on Trance CDs or events. The situation seems to get better for Coda though.

How's it like in your motherland ?

in the uk absolutely no coverage in mainstream magazines (ok sometimes dj mag has the odd album review) however there are underground psychedelic magazines (implant from bristol, shangri-lala from london and historical now dream creation) also there is psy trance stuff in upfront another underground dance mag from bristol.           >>love will tear us apart...<<

Tom, I ve read a few issues of the Shangri La La... and i liked it a lot !!

And as being french living very close to the german boarder, I have an easy access to the MushroOm Magazine (german, swizz and international issues). And this is VERY helpful

Sometimes Psy-releases are announced/reviewed in other fanzines like Partisan, Sub Culture or Nitebeat which have the same fonction/format/gratuitousness than MushroOm Mag, but are connected to the Techno Scene (MASSIVE in Germany.. the Sub Culture for exemple have different issues for each region/länder).

BTW in France, Coda & Trax are really not my cup of tea... I used to read them few years ago but enough bullshits are enough.. but your last sentence, Jeff, about Coda just woke up my curiosity again... We'll see.

Cheers

no real trouble with cops in south africa. when we see them at parties, it's usually late in the afternoon when they're there to bitch about the high volume.

psytrance is played on the radio every now and then.

we also have a monthly mag called movers&groovers that focus on the psytrance scene in south africa.

in macedonia there is a small covering in the mainstreem magazines. but this happens only for big parties (some of them), and in the magazines they are described as "techno parties" for the big parties there are also huge posters sticked every 2 meters in the city which is NOT GOOD.
however we have a web site www.dpd.com.mk for psy trance issues only and also there is a radio and tv show for electronic music only where substantial part is focused on psy trance           Why u little !!!

In Brazil we have no coverage at all, except few internet sites.
One time scenes from a party were showed on the greatest TV station here, and all they talked about was drugs and how these parties could send your children into the wrong way... bullshit. They don't even mentioned the kind of music played there.

If it does, i have no idea which station that is.
Israel's trance coverage in sidestream media is pretty much all around - you've got Layla Magazine, Dj Ha-ir, Achbar ha-ir and you had the late Newzeek for printed coverage. than you've got radio broadcasts on campus radio and local stations, such as Kamasutrance, Hafirot and Gidi's Show, Tranceformator.           "We Do Not Allways See Things As They Are. No credit is given to Israeli trance artists in Israel, it's like they don't exist.

Gilad,
3-4 local radio stations is not what i would call "Good Coverage". the day trance will be aired on a bigger station, with cross-country syndication, it'll be a different story altogether.

I.D.a.N,
true, not too many trance artists get credit. some do, namely the big names, such as astral, yahel, infected, psysex as well, eyal and oren barkan... but lets ask ourselves this - Do we really want the mainstream media, namely radio and print media, to be familiarized with trance? personally, i would hate hearing classical mushroom or dancing galaxy in an advert praising the qualities of a brand new air conditioner...           "We Do Not Allways See Things As They Are. I guess there is some in Finland.. I mean hell... Texas Faggott made it to the finnish pop charts a few years back

A few years ago there was this trend to show parties in news.. though they only talked about how many drug dealers the blue catched that time...           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

Imagine a rock singer from Israel that performs in front of thousands, in every big city in the world, every week end. He would be a superstar in Israel.

Artists like the ones you mentioned above do it every week and don't get even one good word. on the contrary they get treated like they are deviant. I just want the media to stop look at them like they are deviant, and start giving them some credit ( I don't mean becoming mainstream, just credit).
